Dear parishioners,
The diocese’s convocation of deacons was held on October 24 and 25. This is an annual opportunity for the deacons
(and their wives) to renew acquaintances and fraternity, as well as attend workshops and Mass. Most deacons are not parish employees and therefore they serve the people of the parish for free, just like the many parishioners who serve as volunteer coordinators, chairpersons, and presidents of the various ministries, committees, organizations, and other groups in each parish. May
God continue to bless the deacons of the Church of Trenton, their wives and families, and all of the many parishioners who freely
give of their time as disciples of the Lord in the part of His vineyard that is their parish.
As you may recall, our parish’s men’s prayer group began meeting monthly a year ago (October 2013) -- after a hiatus
of approximately a year and a half – having been started by my predecessor, Fr. Kegley, a couple years earlier. The group usually
meets on the first Saturday (after the 8 a.m. Mass). This month, however, it will host a quarterly meeting of the Catholic Men
for Jesus Christ (CMJC) -- on Thursday, November 6, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., in the parish center. Established in 1997,
CMJC conducts an annual, Saturday-morning-and-afternoon, conference (mini retreat) for the men and teenage boys of the diocese. To supplement the annual conference, CMJC began (in or about April 2013) a free, quarterly gathering (for Catholic men),
which rotates among the different parts of the diocese. This week’s quarterly meeting – an “Evening of Reflection” -- starts with
dinner and fellowship, followed by a spiritual reflection (by the Reverend Thomas F. Maher [pronounced “mar”], pastor of St.
William the Abbot Parish, Howell), prayer, confessions, and Mass. The adult men of our parish (and other parishes) are welcome
to attend (A) the November 6 CMJC meeting and (B) the monthly breakfast meetings of our parish men’s group (October to
June).
This week (November 2-8) is National Vocation Awareness Week, which is sponsored each year by the Committee on
Clergy, Consecrated Life, and Vocations of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB). When it began in 1976, its celebration was assigned to the 28th Week in Ordinary Time. Starting this year, it now occurs during the first full week of November.
Please pray for vocations to the priesthood, the diaconate, the religious sisterhood, and the religious brotherhood. If you are discerning a call to diocesan priesthood, please contact the Very Reverend Dennis A. Apoldite, diocesan director of vocation recruitment (and also pastor of Sacred Heart Parish, Trenton, administrator of Divine Mercy Parish, Trenton, and dean of the Southern
Mercer Deanery, which includes our parish).
Today we would normally celebrate the Thirty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time. This year, however, because November
2 falls on a Sunday, the universal Church is instead celebrating the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls
Day). We Catholic Christians say that we offer up our sorrows, sufferings, sadnesses, hurts, injuries, wrongs, and disappointments for the poor souls in purgatory (and as a share in our Lord’s passion and death). The souls in purgatory – which may include deceased relatives and friends – are going through that final purification for the sins they committed on earth, in preparation
for their eventual entrance into the kingdom of heaven where they will experience the beatific vision (seeing God face to face).
The members of the Church Suffering (in purgatory) want our prayers, as they long to join the members of the Church Triumphant (in heaven), i.e., all the hallowed (holy) ones – the saints (who are in heaven with God and his angels). As members of the
Church Militant (the third part of the threefold Communion of Saints), we the baptized -- living, mortal, human beings -- constantly invoke the intercession of the angels and saints in heaven, continually pray for the poor souls in purgatory, and earnestly
struggle to do our best (as sinners and imperfect people) to deny ourselves, pick up our cross daily, and follow the way of the
Lord. May the souls of all the faithful departed rest in peace.

PURGATORIAL SOCIETY
Because of All Souls Day falls on the first Sunday in November this
year, the monthly Purgatorial Society Mass will be next Sunday, November 9 (instead of the usual first Sunday).
MEMORIAL MASS
Our St. Raphael-Holy Angels annual memorial Mass will be Saturday,

National Vocation Awareness Week
National Vocation Awareness Week is November 2-8. Did you
know that in our country, compared to 50 years ago, there are
20,000 fewer priests and 129,00 fewer religious sister? At the
same time, the Catholic population has continued to grow steadily. Many factors have contributed to the decline: growing secularism, a lengthened period of adolescence, attitudes about celibacy, etc. During Vocation Awareness Week, please pray that
young people in today’s society will hear and respond to God’s
call. You can also do your part to encourage them to consider the
priesthood and religious life.

Breakfast Buffet
Knights of Columbus Council #6213 will be having its breakfast

SPRING FORWARD—FALL BACK
Daylight Savings Time ended Sunday, November 2, at 2:00 a.m. (We
will be in Standard Time for four months, until Daylight Savings Time
resumes on March 8, 2015.) The National Fire Protection Association
recommends we check the smoke alarms in our homes monthly, including when we change our clocks each spring and fall. Approximately two thirds of home fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke
alarms or working smoke alarms.
ANNUAL WINTER-CLOTHING DRIVE
Society of Saint Vincent de Paul
St. Vincent de Paul will be collecting new winter hats,
gloves and scarves to be donated to Mt. Carmel Guild
for the poor. The drive will run from November 15 through
December 14. Items can be placed in one of the bins located
in the narthex of Holy Angels and St. Raphael churches.

ROSARY FOR LIFE
The monthly Rosary for Life will be prayed after the 11:30 am
Mass in St. Raphael Church next Sunday, November 9 -- the
second Sunday of the month. Our parish’s Respect for Life
Committee invites you to join in praying for a greater respect
and protection of all human life---so that the culture of death
surrounding us today will be replaced with a culture of life. All

The Saint Raphael School PTA has boxes in each church narthex
and in the school hallway, for Box Tops for Education, Campbell
soup labels, and Coca Cola bottle caps. We earn money for box
tops, and points for the labels and caps. This enriches the students’
education. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart a
Christocentric prayer. In the sobriety of its elements, it has all

Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work of the redemptive
Incarnation which began in her virginal womb. With the Rosary,
the Christian people sits at the school of Mary and is led to
contemplate the beauty on the face of Christ and to experience

abundant grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother

NURSING HOME
Tuesday, November 11. 6:15 - 8:00 pm. Another November means our ministry will once again sponsor a Sweater Bingo for the nursing home residents. If
you have any new or gently used sweaters and sweatshirts which you no longer
want, we would love to have them for our special prizes this month. Volunteers,
including students, are needed to help with Bingo and sweater distribution on
the 11th. Meet on the second floor of the facility which is located on Hamilton
Avenue, near the intersection of Klockner.
CALENDARS AND CARDS
Collection baskets have now been placed in the entrance areas of our two
churches. Please consider donating any 2015 calendars and new Christmas
cards which you have received in the mail, but which you do not want or need.
These will be donated to our friends at the local nursing homes and the Trenton
Soup Kitchen.
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN
Saturday, November 8. 12:00 - 5:00 pm. In addition to its feeding programs,
TASK also has visual and performing arts programs for interested patrons. The
talents of these artists are amazing and will be on display at the TASK facility on
November 8, as part of Trenton’s Art All Day program. The “art gallery” in the
TASK dining room will be open. Visitors are invited to meet and greet the ATEAM artists, enjoy performances of poetry and music and attend the premiere
of a short film by the SHARE participants. Trolley’s will also be circulating to
other art areas in the City of Trenton. It is a fun and inspiring day.

If you would like a minister of Holy Communion to bring
Communion to you in your pew or wheelchair, would you
or a relative, friend or other Mass attendee please contact one of the ushers before Mass, so that he or one of
the other ushers can lead one of the ministers of Communion to you.

If you are traveling, you can locate a Catholic church by going

enter a ZIP code or city, you will be given a list of several
churches within a certain radius, along with each church’s
Mass schedule, location, etc. (You will need to wait several
seconds, while the website search is being completed.) This is
also a good planning tool for when you are preparing for a vacation or business trip. MassTimes.org has an iPhone app:

Lost & Found articles are kept in whichever church they
are found. In St. Raphael Church, there is a cart in the
rear aisle which holds items such as gloves, etc. If the
item is more valuable, such as a cell phone, it is locked in
the sacristy. In Holy Angels Church, items are placed in
the sacristy. Items are only brought to the rectory for rare
circumstances.

All Souls Day
Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
A Month of Remembering
November is a month of remembering. During November, we celebrate both All Souls day and
All Saints Day, which is remembering and honoring those who came before us and reached
heaven. We remember not only their lives, but how they set forth an example of living. Traditionally, at St. Raphael-Holy Angels Churches we are likely to see tables set aside where pictures of
our loved ones might be displayed. The Church in her wisdom, gives us a whole month to focus
on our primary objective as Catholic Christians. Our lives have been saved by the redeemer,
through His death and resurrection we have been saved. The promise of eternal life is a supernatural reality check where we get to choose the direction we wish to follow. Men and Women,
young and old, of every nation have been created in His image and likeness for one purpose,
that purpose is to love. If we adhere to last weeks gospel reading and follow the commandments
to love God and our neighbor as ourselves we will enjoy our eternity with Him forever. If we do
not, our eternity will be spent in a place where there is “gnashing of teeth.” As we enter more
deeply, this month, into the profound mystery of eternal life, let us not forget that our motivation
to attain a heavenly reality is not simply fear based (I don't want to go to hell), but instead let us
heed the words of a lesser known saint, Saint Elizabeth of The Trinity who claimed, “all the way
to heaven is heaven”. We yearn for our heavenly inheritance because it is the way we have been
made, because it is an innate yearning for all of mankind, created in the image and likeness of
God, created through Him, and with Him and in Him. We have been made so as to be with Him,
(in this world and in the next). As we live in the shadow of our heavenly inheritance so shall we
die, and if we live as if there is no God that loves us, again, so shall we die! The call to holiness
extends to all people, even those we struggle to love. Our Lord draws all men to himself. Jesus
has won the victory over death and sin, so that if we clothe ourselves with Christ, we too might
share fully in that victory. November is about remembering our call. It is about being confronted
by our mortality (and our immortality). It is a month of prayerful remembrance for those who have
passed before us and are in need of intercession. It is a month of being inspired by those already
in heaven, who intercede on our behalf. It is a unifying month when we remember the church
militant, the church triumphant and the church suffering are united, as you Father, Son and Holy
Spirit are united. Lest we forget, the Father draws us to Himself !
