Dear parishioners,
The Reverend Eugene T. Keenan died on Sunday, November 2. He served as a parochial vicar in St. Raphael Parish
from June 18, 1971 (as a newly ordained priest) until June 6, 1975. During those four years, the pastor was the late Reverend
Monsignor William E. Maguire (1971-78). Also residing in the rectory -- from 1972 to 1973 -- was newly arrived (from Ireland) transitional Deacon Michael J. Walsh, who subsequently was ordained a priest on June 9, 1973, by Bishop George W.
Ahr and who continued to serve the parish as a newly ordained priest (and parochial vicar) until 1979. Father Keenan was
born on February 28, 1942, was ordained a priest on May 29, 1971, and later served our nation as a Navy chaplain. Please
pray for his soul and the souls of all the faithful departed. Requiescat in pace.
On Friday, November 7, in St. Raphael Church, we installed -- on the rear door of the balcony (cry room) -- the
following sign: “Emergency exit only / Door will shut and lock / behind you // Restrooms are locked // Please use restrooms
on / first floor of school wing / (Sat. & Sunday) // Door is alarmed / Mon. 8 AM to Sat. 8 AM”. As the sign states, the restrooms on the second floor are locked on weekends. If you need to use the restroom during Mass, would you please go down
the stairs to the nave and through the rear aisle to the restrooms on the first floor of the school wing. (In most churches, the
choirloft / balcony does not have its own restroom.)
As I stated in my pastor’s message of August 31, we completed – on August 21 – the three-day repaving of the parking area in front of St. Raphael Church, the area near the pre-school playground, and the area from there to Gropp Avenue. In
that message, I noted that the striping of those three areas would be delayed from the planned date of August 25, because (1) I
had decided to add (A) crosswalks and (B) access aisles for the handicapped stalls (spaces) and (2) the striping company
therefore asked for drawings or sketches. (Although we, as a religious institution, are not required to have crosswalks and access aisles, I want to add the crosswalks for pedestrian safety and the access aisles for the convenience of parishioners and others who have handicapped license plates or a placard and who need to be able to open their vehicle’s driver’s door and/or passenger’s door completely -- without being impeded by the proximity of the adjacent vehicle.) On Tuesday, October 28, our
facilities manager, Dan Compton, and I met with the striping vendor and reviewed with him the drawings of crosswalks, handicapped stalls, and access aisles. The vendor then had to add us to his already busy schedule. If the vendor is not able to do the
striping this month (if and when the temperature is at least fifty degrees or so), the striping will be done in the spring. I thank
you for your continuing patience.
In August 1981, the Diocese of Trenton celebrated its centennial, at the then-Garden State Arts Center, Holmdel.
Three months later -- on November 21, 1981 – Pope John Paul II took the four northern counties (Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, and Warren) of our diocese and formed them as the newly erected Diocese of Metuchen, leaving us with our current
four counties of Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth, and Ocean. The formal announcement was on Nov. 24. At that time, our
diocese had approximately 850,000 people, of which around 359,000 became the founding members of the Diocese of Metuchen. Thirty-three years later, our diocese’s population has returned to around that same number -- 850,000 Catholics. (In
1937, the six southern counties of our then-fourteen-county diocese were split off to create the Diocese of Camden, while the
three western counties of the then-seven-county Diocese of Newark were split off to create the Diocese of Paterson. At the
same time, Newark was elevated to an archdiocese, with three suffragan dioceses.)
Last month, on October 15 – the Memorial of St. Teresa of Jesus (also known as St. Teresa of Avila) – the universal
Church began a year-long celebration of the quincentenary of her birth, on March 28, 1515. (The Latin word for “five” is
quinque [pronounced kwin’ kway].) Saint Teresa of Avila, pray for us.
God bless you.

PERPETUAL ADORATION CHAPEL
Our parish is blessed to have a perpetual chapel, which was founded
on November 1, 2010, by our founding pastor, the Reverend Jeffrey J.
Kegley. The chapel is in the Saint John Paul II Spiritual Center (former
convent), which is located on the driveway that leads from South
Broad Street to St. Raphael Church. Adorers come from our parish
and our sister parishes — twenty-four hours a day -- to adore and
spend time with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, in the Blessed
Sacrament in the monstrance on the altar. Because the scheduled
adorers (who commit to one of the 168 hours each week) sometimes
move, get sick, or go away on vacation or to weddings, etc., we always need more adorers (for a particular hour each week or as a
substitute). If you are able to make a weekly commitment or be a
substitute, please see the sign-up form (and the notice below it) on
Page 10.
NECROLOGY
In your charity, please pray for the souls of:
The Reverend G. William Evans, who served as a parochial
vicar in Holy Angels Parish (May 25, 1986-June 16, 1989) and
as administrator (October, 1986-February, 1987). Born on December 6, 1943, and ordained on May 20, 1978, he retired as
pastor of St. Dorothea Church, Eatontown, on September 2,
2009, and died on November 18, 2013
The Reverend Peter J. Mooney, who served as the sixth
pastor of Holy Angels Parish (1976-85) and died on November
21, 1991.
Requiescat in pace.

Is God Calling You?
Vocational discernment groups meet to assist young men
who are discerning the possibility that God May be calling them
to a life of priestly ministry. These groups are designed to explore a priestly vocation with other liked-minded men through
prayer and sharing vocation stories and experiences. The
group meetings aren’t meant to convince anyone that the
priesthood is their vocation. They are designed to assist you in
discovering if the priesthood is your true vocation and build
your relationship with Christ along the way.
If you are a faithful, single, Roman Catholic man, between
the ages of 18 and 40, and are asking whether God is calling
you to be a priest, you are cordially invited to attend this
month’s discernment meeting on November 23, from 4:00 to
6:00 pm, at Saint Charles Borromeo Parish, 2226 Riverton
Road, Cinnaminson, NJ. Join Very Rev. Peter James Alindogan and Rev. Chris Picollo, as they share their experiences
of the priesthood, followed by prayer and conclude with conversation and a meal.
Please register with Diocese of Trenton Vocation Office at
[email protected] or by phone (609) 406-7449.
Join us at this exciting time as you discover and respond to His
invitation.

GOOD COUNSEL HOMES—SOUTH JERSEY
As baby bottles continue to be returned, we again
thank you for all your kind and supportive words
during our return visit to St. Raphael-Holy Angels Parish. We
enjoyed sharing the success stories of our moms since we visited last October, made possible through your prayers and generosity. Our baby bottle appeal, to date, is $9,155.19 and we
are truly humbled, once again, by your generosity and commitment to the unborn. You can still return any baby bottles you
may have to the parish office (in the rectory). Thank you for
your support and prayers for our mothers who have chosen to
give their baby life. To contact JoAnn DiNoia, her email: [email protected]. (Even an empty returned
bottle is a donation, as this is one less we have to purchase.)

ALL SOULS MONTH
During November, we remember and pray for the souls of our
faithful departed -- especially relatives, friends, and fellow parishioners. If our loved one is in heaven, they no longer need
our prayers. If they are in purgatory, however, going through
that final purification for the sins they committed on earth, they
still need our prayers. That is why we pray for the faithful departed during every Mass, in the Eucharistic Prayer.
INTENTIONS of POPE FRANCIS for November
Universal: That all who suffer loneliness may experience the closeness of God and the support of others.
For Evangelization: That young seminarians and religious may have
wise and well-formed mentors.
SOCIETY of SAINT VINCENT de PAUL
The good news of today’s Gospel is the extravagance of
what is being given us. All we need to do is be faithful in
“small matters.” The cost of fidelity has no comparison to
the reward given.
Knowing that we find the face of Christ in the poor, this month,
through your gifts, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was able to
serve families, providing in food, for utility and rent bills, etc. Thank
you.

programs that reach out to those in need, please call the parish office

Word of Life ~ November, 2014
“[T]he courage and grace shown by those women who choose life—in
the face of fear, uncertainty, parental or partner intimidation, seemingly insurmountable odds—make them today’s heroes. They are joined
by the many who counsel, support and nurture them both before and
after the birth of their child. Such self-giving love...is powerfully transformative of mother, of child, or families, of cultures.”

MASS while AWAY FROM HOME
If you are traveling, you can locate a Catholic church by
going to MassTimes.org or TheCatholicDirectory.com.
When you enter a ZIP code or city, you will be given a list
of several churches within a certain radius, along with
each church’s Mass schedule, location, etc. (You will
need to wait several seconds, while the website search is
being completed.) This is also a good planning tool for
when you are preparing for a vacation or business trip.

The Rosary, though clearly Marian in character, is at heart
a Christocentric prayer. In the sobriety of its elements, it
has all the depth of the Gospel message in its entirety, of
which it can be said to be a compendium. It is an echo of
the prayer of Mary, her perennial Magnificat for the work
of the redemptive Incarnation which began in her virginal
womb. With the Rosary, the Christian people sits at the
school of Mary and is led to contemplate the beauty on
the face of Christ and to experience the depths of his
love. Through the Rosary the faithful receive abundant
grace, as though from the very hands of the Mother of the
Redeemer.

Mariae)

BOX TOPS, LABELS, CAPS
The Saint Raphael School PTA has boxes in each church
narthex and in the school hallway, for Box Tops for Education, Campbell soup labels, and Coca Cola bottle
caps. We earn money for box tops, and points for the
labels and caps. This enriches the students’ education.

THIRD GRADE
Investigates Rural, Urban, and Suburban
Communities
Third grade has been learning all about rural,
urban, and suburban communities in Social
Studies class. They learned that a community is a place where people live, work, and
play. After thoroughly discussing how each
type of community functions, the students
were split into five groups. Each group was
responsible for creating a 3-D model of either
a rural, urban, or suburban community. Students bought in a variety of items to create
houses for their suburban communities,
buildings for their urban communities, and
farms for their rural communities. They were
extremely creative and it was amazing to see
their communities come to life. Third grade
at Saint Raphael School is a wonderful place
to learn about the world around us.

WE ARE IN DIRE NEED OF FOOD
SHALL WE EAT OR HEAT?
This statements raised many times in many households. As winter
draws near, many have to make the decision. We recommend that these families get food from either St. Raphael-Holy Angels Food Pantry or
other pantries and save the cost of their food to heat their homes.
If we suggest to these families to use our food pantry to procure
food, then we definitely should have food on hand for distribution. At this
time, we are in need of all types of non-perishable and perishable foods.
Please do not place perishables in the bins, but call 609-585-3848, to
get directions for drop off.
We will be collecting turkey’s for Thanksgiving on Wednesday, November 12 and November 19 in the Parish Center from 7:00-8:00 pm.
Remember, monetary donations are always welcomed.
God bless all of our parishioners who donate food, and all our volunteers who pickup, stock, sort, bag and assist on “Reach Out Saturdays.”
We would not be able to keep our pantry open if it was not for these
great volunteers.
Next “Reach Out Saturday” is November 22
9:00 am - 11:00 am, Parish Center

facility which is located on Hamilton Avenue, near the intersection of Klockner.
TRENTON AREA SOUP KITCHEN

Eve. What better way to end the year 2014 than by helping others.

TURKEYS NEEDED !
Please consider helping to make the holidays
joyous for our hungry families. We will be collecting donations of turkeys (or turkey breasts)
on Wednesday, November 12 and 19, from
7:00 –8:00pm in the parish center. If you qualify for a free turkey and will not be using it for your own family, please consider donating it to the food pantry. ~ God bless you for your
kindness.
CHRISTMAS GIVING TREE PROGRAM
There may not yet be frost on your
pumpkins but, believe it or not, the time
is here to begin planning for the parish’s
annual Christmas Giving Tree Program.
If your family is currently experiencing
serious financial difficulties due to an
illness, loss of employment, etc., your
parish community would like to lend a
helping hand to make the Christmas
holiday a little brighter.
Assistance requests will be taken
beginning this week by calling 5853848. When calling, please have the
following information at hand: age and
gender of children, specific clothing
sizes, interests, and items of particular
need.
If you know of a family in the community, (they do not have to be parish
members), who is in serious need, you
may refer them.
Please note that we can accept only
a limited number of families, and requests will be considered in the order in
which we receive them. The deadline for
requests is Friday, November 21.

YR 10,WK 12, 33rd Sun in Ordinary Time
Leading Teens Closer To Christ!
Taking Care of the Temple
The final Sunday in Ordinary time for 2014 is upon us and it is getting us ready for the Final
Judgment. While there is nothing ordinary about “Ordinary Time”, every liturgical event every day
has special significance but especially Sundays. When the church, in her wisdom, proscribes a
title for a day, whether it be a feast day, an “Ordinary” day or a special season, there is always
good reason to pay attention. For those of us who follow the liturgical rhythm of the Church, we
recognize that we are being readied for yet another big event. In recent weeks, we have been
reminded of the tri-fold nature of the church community. As seen in the feasts of All Saints and
All Souls, The Commemoration of The Faithfully Departed reminded us of the Church Triumphant, The Church Penitent or Suffering and the Church Militant! Here we are faced with the
timelessness of God. All those who have gone before us are still present with us in every Eucharistic celebration. Last week, in the Dedication of St John Lateran, we were reminded of the importance of the church within the church i.e. our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit and we are
called to come together and worship the one true God in the One True Church. We are called to
renew both temples by daily surrendering ourselves to The One who makes all things new. All in
all, there has been an eschatological feel to our readings of late and this week is no different. In
the second reading, St Paul tells us there is no need to write to us about times and seasons for
he suggests that we all know that the Lord will come like a thief in the night. Furthermore, he reminds us that while he himself does not know when the second coming will take place, he does
know that it will take place. Therefore, we must be vigilant, for it is definitely coming. Once again
we are being reminded to stay awake, to stay alert, to stay sober. Today's gospel also points
forward to the Last Day. The focus is not solely on staying awake but on the kind of behavior that
will stand up to the scrutiny of the Final Judgment. Everyone of us have been blessed with
unique gifts and talents. They are not our own but have been given to us by God and given for a
definite purpose. The reason behind these gifts is to fulfill our role in serving/loving God (the Giver) and loving one another as He has first loved us. When we use our gifts in the right way they
bear fruit and multiply in the lives of those around us and aid in the salvation of souls (both ours
and theirs). When we abuse these gifts they bear no fruit and eventually wither away, helping no
one and ultimately hindering the recipient of the gifts. Let us share our gifts today and spread the
good news that salvation has come .

REFLECTION
Dear Parishioners,
All choirs are busy preparing for Advent and Christmas. Please consider
becoming part of our Youth Choir (Heaven’s Echo), Adult Choir or the Bell
Choir. Rehearsal times are listed on the bottom of this page. Remember, to
ring or sing is to pray twice (Saint Augustine).
Please mark the following dates on your calendar:
i Sunday, December 7, at 3:00 pm — Holy Angels Church—Lessons and
Carols (A program depicting salvation history through sacred scripture,
prayer and song.)
i Sunday, January 4, 2015, at 7:00 pm —Saint Raphael Church—
Christmas Concert. (A joyous celebration featuring all of our parish
choirs.)
This Saturday, (November 22)we celebrate the Memorial of Saint Cecilia,
one of the patron saints of western music. Cecilia is said to have been a Roman martyr of the third century. According to tradition, she was betrothed to a
pagan, Valerian. At her wedding, feast Cecilia removed herself from the festivities and “sang to God in her heart”: Let my heart and my body be undefiled, O
Lord, that I may not be confounded.” On her wedding night, Cecilia converted
Valerian to the faith with the help of an angel. Valerian was later martyred with
his brother Tiburtius. Cecilia was also captured and beheaded, but not before
she had donated her property to the Church. A fifth-century in the Trastavere
district of Rome was probably Cecilia’s gift.
May we always carry a song of praise to God in our heart.
God bless you,
Lori Hoos
