As the first quarter of our
school year comes to a
close and we start our

second quarter, I would
like to recognize how hard
both the students and
staff have been working.
We are off to a great start
academically, and I
encourage students to
keep setting meaningful
and attainable goals for
the rest of our school year.
As teachers continue to
challenge students, these
goals will help keep
students focused and
ready to accept those
challenges.
The Riley Parents
Association works very
hard to support Riley
School. I would like to
thank them for sponsoring
the annual Hall of Harvest
and Halloween Party. We
also had many junior high
students that
volunteered their time and
helped with the games.
Your help was truly
appreciated.
Change in Weather
We are now experiencing
drastic changes in weather
and temperature. Please
be sure that your child is
dressed for the weather
each day. We have
already had days where
the temperatures have
dipped into the thirties
and forties. Many
students came to school
without coats. We go out
for recess each day unless
it is raining or the
temperature falls below
zero. We do not allow
students to stay in
because they think it is too
cold out. They must come
prepared. Dressing in
layers is the best option.
Students can always take
off a sweater or a
sweatshirt if the day gets
warmer than anticipated.
Gloves and hats are also
recommended because on
windy days the effects of
the cold can be magnified
by the wind chill. During
the months when students
might get wet from
playing in the snow,
students are not allowed
to change into their gym
clothes. If boots are not
worn they are not allowed
off the black top area. For

the elementary students it
is recommended that they
have an extra pair of
socks.

Just a reminder of

Wednesday from 1:00PM
to 8:30PM with a dinner
break from 4:30PM-
5:30PM; Thursday,

Junior High parents do not
need a scheduled
appointment. Just come
to the gym to see all Junior
High teachers.
Veteran’s Day Assembly
As noted in the October
NEWNOTES, we will be
participating in a joint
Veteran’s Day Assembly
with the other area
schools on November 11th.
Students in grades 3-8 will
go to the Marengo
Community High School
for this assembly. All area
veterans are invited to
attend. If you have
questions, you may
contact the high school
directly at 815-568-6511.
School Report Card
The school report card will
be posted on the Riley
website once the report
card has been released by
the State. You should be
able to access it sometime
in early November.
Health Care Career Fair
On Friday, October 17th,
the Eighth Grade Class
participated in the Heath
Care Career Fair held at
Woodstock North High
School. This career fair is
presented by the McHenry
County Cooperative for
Employment Education
and Centegra Health
Systems. Students had an
opportunity to visit a
variety of booths that
highlighted many different
careers in the Heath Care
Industry. Students were
allowed to interact with
medical staff and
participate in hands-on
activities that related to
these careers. This event
exposes students to
possible career choices in
the medical field and
allows them to explore
information related to
these careers. We thank
the McHenry County
Cooperative for
Employment for providing
this opportunity to our
students.

LITERACY CORNER
Jesse White, Secretary of
State for Illinois, has
designated Thursday,
November 20th, as “Family
Reading Night.” Each
family in Illinois is
encouraged to spend
quality time reading
together. This may be
silent reading or the
sharing of stories together.
Children model their
behavior after the adults
in their life. By seeing
adults reading, children
have a positive reading
model. If that Thursday is
not convenient, choose a
different night to turn the
TV off and have some fun
reading as a family!
Because we had such a
great turnout last year, we
plan to host another
Family Literacy Night
sometime in February.
Keep an eye out for more

It was a perfect day for the
running of the 35th
Pumpkin Run. It was
sunny and cool. The
students had worked hard
preparing to reach their
goals. Each finisher
earned a pumpkin and a
ribbon. A BIG THANK YOU
to the Delgado Family for
their generous donation
for pumpkins, the Tierney
Family, the Hasselmann
Family, and Hubbs
Greenhouse for donating
pumpkins. Also thank you
to all the parents that
helped at the finish line
and prepared the ribbons.

FIRST GRADE’S VISIT
TO ROYAL OAK APPLE
ORCHARD IN
HARVARD
On Friday, October 3, the
first grade class went to
Royal Oak Apple Orchard
in Harvard as a
culminating activity for
their apple unit. The
children and a large group
of their parents heard
some of the history of this
area, went on a wagon
ride to the apple orchard
and picked apples. The
children also got to play on
the playground and have
fun at the petting zoo.
They had fresh apple cider
and apple cider doughnuts
as a special treat. The
children had this to say
about their trip:
Divina- I like to play at the
apple orchard. It is fun.
Garrett- I liked the
playground.
Daschle- I like to play and
pick apples.
Lilly- When I went to the
apple orchard I picked
apples.
Payton- I like the apple
orchard because the
playground is so much fun.
Lincoln- I like picking
apples at the apple
orchard.
Gabby- I love to pick
apples. I like to eat apples.
Pierce- I like to pick
apples. Red apples are my
favorite. I was picking
apples.
Caleb- I like best the
apples with my friend.
Jack- I like to go to the
tractor to pick apples.
Elizabeth- At the apple
orchard I like to pick
apples off the apple trees.

8TH GRADE NEWS
Can you dance?
The 8th grade class will be
hosting a junior high dance
on November 7th from
3:15 pm to 5:00 pm.
Students in 6th grade
through 8th grade are
invited. Cost will be $5.00.
The dance will begin at
3:15 and will conclude at 5
pm. A student may not
receive a behavioral
detention the week of
November 3rd. Come and
join in the fun and show us
how you groove…..

being asked to bring in a
treat for 12 students. A
note will be coming on
October 29th.

Pie sales
Pie sale orders were due
Friday, October 24th.
Reminder to parents: You
will need to pick up your
child’s order on Thursday,
November 6th from 3:00
pm -4:00 pm at Riley Town
Hall. There is no freezer
space at Riley School.
Please make appropriate
arrangements so that pies
will be picked up on time
as well as delivered to the
customer. Stay tuned to

the top 3 sellers were.
Are there any Angels out
there?
The 8th grade class will be
promoting “Angel Week”
at Riley School during the
week of November 3th -7th.
What is “Angel Week”?
Angel week will be a time
where our Riley Staff and
student body (aka: Our
Angels) will participate in a
fun dress up week. Each
day of the week we will
have a specific dress up
theme. A handout will go
home with each student to
communicate what each
of the dress up days will
be. Participation will cost
25 cents per day.
The money that is
collected from the Angel
Week will help purchase
Christmas gifts for a Riley
Family in need. The
homeroom class that
collects the most money
will be given a pizza party
sponsored by the 8th grade
class. Let’s see how many
wonderful ANGELS we
have at Riley School!
The dress up days for the
week of November 3rd –
7th is the following:
Monday: Neon Day…wear
your favorite neon color.
Tuesday: Sports Day…wear
your favorite team’s
apparel.
Wednesday: Formal
Day…dress in formal wear.

comfy clothing as we will
be watching a movie in the
afternoon.
“FOUR!!!”
The 8th grade class has
been working on their golf
skills in physical education.
On Monday, October 6,
2014, the eighth grade
class went to Marengo
Ridge Golf Course to put
those skills to the test.
The students golfed for a
little over two hours. The
class did a great job as
only a few balls landed in
the water or sand. The
students did learn that you
get a good workout
through both the golfing
and all the walking from
hole to hole. Deciding
which club to use for each
distance became more
important on the course
compared to hitting at
Riley. The class was given
two rules. Rule number
one was to have fun
golfing. Rule number two
was respect the course.
The students learned that
for every divot they made
they needed to fix and fill
it in. A lot more work than
at school!
We would like to thank
our chaperones Mr. &
Mrs. Girgens and their
friend, and Mr. Mitchell.
Without their help our
field trip would not have
been successful. Also, a
BIG thank you goes out to
Marengo Ridge Golf
Course.
EIGHTH GRADE
VOLLEYBALL SEASON
This year the 8th grade girls
had a very successful
volleyball season. They
finished with a conference
record of 8 wins and 2
losses to take second
place in their conference.
They went to the MidNorthern Conference
Tournament at
Westminster Christian in
Elgin where they lost to
Prairie Grove. The girls did
a great job this year and I
enjoyed working with
them. The following girls

MUSIC UPDATE
General Music (K-4): We
are preparing for our
holiday program for
Monday, December 15 at
7:00pm. Some of the
students in 3rd and 4th
grade have been given a
part in our play. Please
help your child memorize
their lines. The theme this
year is a story about elves,
reindeer, and Mr. and Mrs.
Claus. You will find a list of
what your child should
wear to the program
below.

ask your child what part
they have in the play. We
are still auditioning parts
so a few of them may not
officially know.
Elves: Please wear nice
clothes in red, green, and
white. Accessories will be
provided.
All other students (K-2):
Please dress nicely with
holiday colors.
Reindeer: Please wear
nice brown clothes.
Accessories will be
provided.
Concert Band: Please hand
in the Trills and Thrills
form and Pep band Forms
as soon as possible. The
Trills and Thrills Festival
will be on Friday, May
22nd. This contest is a
requirement for all band
students. Please plan for
your students to be gone
the whole day.
Santa and Mrs. Claus:
Please let me know if you
are able to provide
something that looks like
Santa or Mrs. Claus (White
beard or wig).
Concert Band, Beginning
Band, and Choir: Our
Candle fundraiser is
underway. Your child
should have an order form
coming home. Our goal is
for each student to sell at
least 12 candles. The Fund
Raiser is going to run from
October 27th through
November 17th.
