The Friends of Lakeview Library will meet next on Saturday, November 1, at 11:30 p.m. Check our website: www.lakeviewfriends.org Art Exhibit: Architectural Drawings by William Coburn For the months of November and December, William Pierce Coburn presents an exhibition of 20 design drawings illustrating solutions to design problems over a span of 30 years. Mr. Coburn, a graduate of Harvard Graduate School of Design and a veteran of many experiences in Oakland neighborhoods, has had a design practice for many years. He is based in West Oakland. These sketches and design drawings illustrate the commitments people continue to make as they invest in Oakland and its environs. Let’s Meet in the Teen Zone Shrinky Dinks Friday, November 7, from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. Shrinky Dinks are a toy and activity kit with large flexible plastic sheets which, when heated in an oven, shrink to small hard plates without altering their color or shape. Most sets are pre-printed with outline images of popular children's characters or other subjects, which are then colored in before baking.. dNaga Dances Freedom and Leadership: A Tribute to Yuri Kochiyama Saturday, November 8, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Lakeview features a dance celebration dedicated to the spirit of civil rights icon, Yuri Kochiyama (1921-2014) followed by a post performance dialogue with Pamela Wu Kochiyama (Creative Consultant) and J. Miakoda Taylor (Director of Fierce Allies). This performance is a fiscally sponsored project of Dancers' Group and is supported in part by the Akonadi Foundation. dNaga is an inter-generational dance company founded in 2011 by Oakland's creative artist and teacher,Claudine Naganuma. This company uses art as a powerful tool with which to examine and encourage social change and political responsibility. Ms. Naganuma's dances are built with content for impacting and building community engagement. Lego Mania Club Friday, November 14, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Design, build, and explore with LEGO and Duplo blocks. Come play! The Lego Mania Club meets the 2nd Friday of the month. Give and Take: A Monthly Children’s Swap Saturday, November 15, from 11:15 a.m. to noon Come swap out your kids’ gently-used clothing, books, and toys for others that are new to you! Lakeview Saturday Chess Club Meeting Saturday, November 15, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The Lakeview Saturday Chess Club meets at Lakeview Library on the 3rd Saturday of the month, for drop in chess games. If the weather is sunny, they will be playing outside. Come by for a game of chess. Lakeview Book Club The Mermaid Chair by Sue Monk Kidd Saturday, November 18, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The Mermaid Chair is the second novel written by Sue Monk Kidd. It explores the life of a woman returning to an island off South Carolina to handle a family emergency. The summer she spends there changes her life and the lives of many others, revealing secrets, healing past harm and causing everyone involved to grow. This novel has much to discuss at the Book Club Meeting, superstition, religion, sacrifice, infidelity, ennui, forgiveness and renewal all in the remote land influenced by Gullah culture. Every time an artist from the Museum of Children’s Art comes to Lakeview, she or he takes us around the world in art. Lakeview Writers Saturday, November 22, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. Come to the library for Lakeview’s long-running popular program on writing your own stories. The group will be led by Selene Steese. We will do timed writing on topics we choose and read aloud what we’ve written. Weekly Programs: Toddler Story Time Every Wednesday From 10:10 – 10:35 a.m. Baby Bounce Every Wednesday From 11:00 – 11:15 a.m. Songs, active rhymes and stories, especially for ages 18 months to 3 years.
