CSM Designated as a
Military Friendly® School
CSM has been designated as a 2015 Military Friendly® School by Victory
Media, Victory Media, a veteran-owned business committed to connecting the
military and civilian worlds.
"It is an honor for the College of Southern Maryland to be recognized with
this designation for the services and support that we provide our many active duty
military personnel, veterans and their families to assist them in reaching their
academic and career goals," said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried. "As one of the
largest veteran-serving colleges or universities within Maryland, CSM is proud to
serve more than 830 military students and their dependents each year."
According to Victory Media, the Military Friendly® Schools designation is awarded to the top 15 percent of
colleges, universities, and trade schools in the country that are doing the most to embrace military students, and to
dedicate resources to ensure their success in the classroom and after graduation.
Of the more than 830 military students served by
the college this year, more than 50 are active duty.
"As one of the largest veteran-serving colleges CSM supports its veteran community in several
or universities within Maryland, CSM is proud
ways, according to Chris Zimmermann, director of
to serve more than 830 military students and
the college’s Financial Assistance Department, which
their dependents each year."
oversees its Veterans Affairs office. The college is
—CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA)
and the Maryland Higher Education Commission,
so that eligible veterans, servicepersons, and certain
dependents of veterans can receive VA educational benefits for credit certificate and associate's degree programs as
well as some Workforce Development programs.
Additionally the college has designed first-year seminars and courses specifically for veterans, taught by a
veteran, to help newly separated or transitioning veterans prepare for and adjust to the college experience. Such
courses actively engage students through group discussions and presentations, and students learn skills such as time
management, research planning, and critical thinking that will benefit them in future college classes. For information
on veterans-only classes, visit http://www.csmd.edu/Current/Veterans/veteranonlyclasses.htm.
CSM also offers veterans a 15 percent tuition discount for individual fitness and pool memberships. Details are
available at http://www.csmd.edu/CommunityEducation/WFR/Fitness/memberships.html
CSM’s outreach includes a dynamic veteran’s organization, which is a chapter
of the Student Veterans Association, a non-profit coalition of more than 700 student
veteran organizations on college campuses globally with a mission to provide military
veterans with the resources, support, and advocacy needed to succeed in higher
education and following graduation. The organization is an inclusive, non-partisan
group that supports all CSM student veterans and their dependents associated with all
branches of the uniformed military services.
The college is involved in and supports community partnerships and events

"Souper" Tuesday Results
CSF's Souper Tuesday which was held on October 21 was a great success! The total raised was $1,547 with $401 raised from
the silent auction and the rest from the soups, baked goods, sodas, and cash/carry items. CSF is donating $1,422 to the American
Cancer Society's Relay for Life in Charles County and $125 to the CSM Foundation for the WFA CSF Cancer Scholarship.
Thanks to our wonderful and generous Souper Chefs for making yummy soups/stews/chili. Thanks to the bakers and those
who donated items for the silent auction, cash/carry tables, drinks, etc. "It takes a village" to successfully raise money for these
very worthy causes, and what a wonderful village we have at CSM and throughout the college community. We appreciate the continued support!
Please mark your calendars for the CSF Holiday Extravaganza which will be held on Thursday, December 4, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m., La Plata Campus,

was CSM's first year of competition with a men's cross-country team.
CSM’s cross-country teams will be competing in the NJCAA
National Meet November 8 in Levelland, Texas. For information on
cross-country and other athletics at the college, visit http://csmd.edu/
athletics/athleticshomepage.html.
Are You Ready for Winter?
Winter is fast approaching, and with the season will arrive inclement weather and the chance
for delayed openings, early closings, and full closings. The college’s decision to alter the
normal operating procedures is based on the safety of students, staff, and faculty. CSM has a
dedicated team involved in gathering information on road conditions and weather forecasts and
the team strives to make the best decision as early as possible.
Once a decision is made, the decision is communicated to the CSM community as quickly as
possible using a variety of resources.
• College Hotline - The college’s emergency hotline is among the resources immediately updated with any information that relates to altering the
normal schedule. For the CSM Emergency Hotline, dial 301-369-1999 or 800-650-4023.
• CSM.TXT - CSM.TXT is CSM's alert service provided through e2Campus. This service will send instant alerts and time-sensitive messages,
including up-to-date information on emergencies and campus closings. Messages can be sent via text message to your cell phone or via e-mail.
Registration is free. All text messaging fees will apply. For information or to register visit http://ready.csmd.edu/CSM.TXT/index.html.
• CSM web site - The CSM web site displays emergency conditions at several locations including the main page at www.csmd.edu and at
ready.csmd.edu.
• School's Out Notification - This service provides e-mail notification of closings and delayed openings. Register at www.schoolsout.com.
• Employee Everyone E-mail - An "Everyone E-mail" is distributed shortly after a decision is made to all employees.
• Media Outlets - The college notifies major Washington, DC media networks, both radio and television, about closings and delayed openings.
Most importantly, employees, visitors, and students are asked to use common sense. CSM covers a large area within Southern Maryland,
and the weather can be dramatically different in each of the three counties. Individuals must evaluate the road conditions unique to their own
commute and should avoid driving in dangerous conditions. If classes are cancelled for the day, faculty are asked to use their Blackboard course
shells to communicate with students about any upcoming assignments, discussions, readings, or homework that can be completed before the next
class meeting. A number of frequently asked questions and their responses regarding weather communications are posted at ready.csmd.edu/
emergencyAbout.html.

Workplace Violence Prevention Training
Targeted workplace violence is a safety issue that can affect
any organization, of any size, in any industry. Fortunately, the vast
majority of dangerous situations can be recognized early enough to be
stopped by appropriate responses to signposts along the “pathway to
violence.” In HRD's upcoming training, we will explore ten warning
signs that can foretell violence, provide examples and explain steps
that can and should be taken by employees to report any concerns.
Please plan to join us for a Workplace Violence Prevention
training session at any one of the following sessions:
December 3
December 4
December 8
La Plata Campus, BU Building, Room 202 9 - 11 a.m.
Leonardtown Campus, Building C, Room 216

in advancing upward in their current positions through training,
development, and service activities that enhance their skills,
knowledge, and abilities.
Are you interested in applying for Promotion-in-Place? Unsure
about the process? No problem. Simply sign up for training either
