Millions of Americans are covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990—celebrated in the month
of October—which provides protection against discrimination based on disability and requires educational institutions
receiving federal funds to provide accommodations, services,or assistive technology to students with disabilities.
CSM's Disability Support Services assists more than 200 students each semester by
providing resources to navigate the educational arena. Some of the services provided

"Access CSM" Pilot Program
Accessing College Courses from High School Classrooms
Associate Professor of Language and Literature Dave Robinson stood at the front of a
classroom at the La Plata Campus, lecturing to a handful of students who were in the room
with him. But on large screens in front of him were another 17 students, taking notes on the
lecture from a classroom at La Plata High School (LPHS), about five miles away.
As CSM seeks innovative ways for college courses to be more accessible for more
students and dually enrolled high school students in this instance, technology makes that
mission a little easier—as well as more complex—every day.
Robinson’s lecture is a pilot program (Access CSM) between CSM and LPHS, which
enables students at LPHS to take a college-level course without leaving the high school.
Subsequently, they are able to get an edge on earning college credit even before they
graduate high school, bringing them one step closer to a college degree.
CSM Associate Professor of Language and Literature
The college already offers dual enrollment to high school students, but Access CSM
Dave Robinson, who teaches LAN-1080 - Popular Culture,
is different. First, the class is for CSM credit only and not high school credit. Second,
lectures students at the La Plata Campus and dually enrolled
students can take the class at the high school campus, eliminating the need

for transportation.
This first fall class, LAN-1080 - Popular Culture, followed by SOC-2010 - Technology and Society to be offered in the spring, make up the pilot
program for CSM.

College's "What If..."
Ideas
Deadline to Take Survey: November 4
During the 2014 All-College Convocation, breakout session
participants were asked to brainstorm one of twelve "What If..."
scenarios.
The results from each of the breakout groups have been reviewed by
the College Innovation Team (CIT), and a summary of these results are
available at www.hawk.csmd.edu/Convocation.
The CIT has grouped similar "What Ifs..." topics to combine similar
efforts, and now is seeking staff and faculty input to help prioritize these
efforts for the college to move forward in pursuing.
Let's continue the discussion. Which ideas do we want to pursue first?
Who wants to be on a work group? Please take a short survey:

Program Helps 50-Plus Population
Prepare for Next Careers
CSM joined 100 colleges nationwide in a three-year initiative
called the “Plus 50 Encore College Completion Program,” which
assists colleges in expanding campus programs that engage the plus-50
population with a focus on workforce training and preparing for
new careers.
An interactive career coaching session will take place from 6 to
8 p.m., November 6 on the La Plata Campus, BI Building, Chaney
Enterprises Conference Room, Room BI113. Eleanor Nelson from
“Coach on Call” will be the featured keynote speaker.
In 2009, Nelson responded to a request for proposal issued by the
Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland, the result of a Federal Block
Grant (part of the Stimulus Bill of 2009) to the State of Maryland, which,
in turn, solicited proposals for innovative projects to assist dislocated
workers. As ‘Coach on Call,’ Nelson became a single source provider as
director for the Job Match Re-Employment Project (JMP.)
Nelson, who holds a master’s degree in educational psychology from
the University of Tennessee-Knoxville, has worked with the Southern
Maryland Workforce Investment Board (WIB) since 2000.
The program will offer skill updates and career makeovers for those
who want to venture into careers such as dental assistant, CNA/GNA
certification, patient care tech, certified medical administrative assistant,
EKG technician, nurse, pharmacy technician, physical therapy aid, early
childhood education teacher, or substitute teacher.
The event is free but registration is required at www.csmd.edu/
CommunityEducation/WFR/plus50encore.html. Light refreshments will
be provided. For information contact Shaunda Holt at [email protected]
or 301-934-7652.

Important Time Sheet Instructions and Deadlines
Please be advised that the Payroll Department has strict deadlines to adhere to in order to ensure that the payroll for the college is processed in an
accurate and timely manner. For some time now, Payroll has consistently been receiving late and incomplete time sheets. It is difficult to meet our
processing deadlines due to backtracking and researching issues regarding incomplete time sheets.
The majority of issues pertain to Student Assistant and Temporary time sheets. Prior to submitting time sheets, it is imperative that they are filled
out completely and verified by the supervisor to ensure that an hourly PPI has been forwarded to the Human Resources Department, that the correct
G/L account code is listed, and that they are signed by both the employee and the supervisor. (Please be reminded that Student Assistants should be
coded to account 511501, and that Temporary employees should be coded to account 511401).
Time sheets are due to the Payroll Department no later than the Wednesday after the end of each pay period. Listed below are the due dates
remaining for 2014.

UNUM Open Enrollment Meetings and Information
UNUM Open Enrollment - October 31, 2014 Deadline
Effective July 1, our life insurance moved to a new carrier:
UNUM. As a part of this transition, UNUM is offering CSM full-time,
benefits-eligible employees an opportunity for a special enrollment
period where additional voluntary life insurance can be obtained on
a guaranteed issue basis—no medical questions will be required. All
existing coverage that employees had with Reliance Standard rolled
over to UNUM. This means that, if you are happy with the amount
of supplemental life insurance you had prior to July 1, 2014, you
do not have to do anything; that coverage remains in force. This is
simply an opportunity to: 1) increase your supplemental life insurance
coverage for yourself, your spouse, and your child(ren) if you have
not previously enrolled in the TOTAL guaranteed issue amounts of: up
to $250,000 for employee; up to $25,000 for spouse; and $5,000 OR
$10,000 for child(ren); OR 2) enroll for the first time if you currently
do not have ANY supplemental life insurance coverage to a guaranteed
issue amount (again, no medical questions required) up to $75,000 for
yourself, $25,000 for your spouse, or $10,000 for your child(ren).
If you want additional supplemental life insurance above the
guaranteed issue amounts listed above, you are free to apply for any
of the amounts below, but amounts above the guaranteed issue level
WILL require the completion of a medical questionnaire:
• Employee - the lesser of 5 times salary or $500,000
• Spouse - up to 100% of the coverage amount in force for the
employee (NOTE: This is a significant enhancement to our coverage
since previously spouses could only have a maximum of $75,000.)
The deadline for submitting your enrollment form is
October 31, 2014 with new or additional coverage becoming
effective January 1, 2015.
For more information, please contact Pam Starkey ext. 7895
or Jen Rupp ext. 4714.

Information Management Team
Organizational Changes
With the recent departure of the director of Information Technology Services (ITS), Dave Howard, and the reassignment of Web Services to the
Marketing Department, ITS was provided with an opportunity to review the structure of the Information Management Team. As a result of this
review, a few changes have been made. ITS now reports directly to James Finger, associate vice president, Information Management Team. The unit
is comprised of the following sections:
•
•
•
•
Applications Development
Enterprise Systems
Network Administration and Security
Technology Support
As part of these changes, Gene Kirscht has been promoted to director, Enterprise Systems, and Dave Marek has been appointed as acting director,
Network Administration and Security. Mark Pielmeier will continue to lead the Applications Development unit and Perry Taylor will continue to lead
the Technology Support unit.
In addition, we have created a new assistant director position for Project Management and Technical Training. This position will also report
directly to the associate vice president. As a part of the recent changes, other adjustments have also been made to realign the job responsibilities of
ITS staff members and to better position the unit to meet its strategic objectives. These changes will be reflected in the CSM spring 2015 telephone
directory. If you have any questions about the realignment, please contact James Finger, ext. 7890.
