Board of Trustees Chair Michael Middleton. “You will always have the support of the Southern Maryland delegation,” said Maryland Del. Sally Jameson. “The money spent on the CE Building is good money. Certainly our future in this region will depend on how we continue to ensure that our young people and those with additional need for training are able to come here.” “The economic impact of CSM is tremendous, not only for our students and their families, but also for our community as a whole. The average income at the career midpoint of someone with an associate's degree in the CSM service area is $48,000—35 percent more than a student with a high school diploma. The economic impact we have to Southern Maryland is $249 million,” said CSM President Dr. Brad Gottfried. “Over the last 10 years, the image, perception and importance of community colleges has changed across the nation. And I cannot think of any institution that has helped change that image more than the College of Southern Maryland,” said Charles County Commissioner Ken Robinson. Kimberly Briscoe-Tonic, owner of the Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home along with her husband Tony, told guests that the college’s Small Business Development Center was instrumental in the opening of their business, which was awarded the 2010 Small Business of the Year during the Leading Edge Awards. A friend encouraged her to go back to school to get the training she needed to get back to the work she loved. The dedication ceremony also included two plaque unveilings. One wing of the CE Building is named The Proctor Family Wing in Honor of Steve and Carolyn Proctor, in recognition of the bequest of $250,000 to the CSM Foundation by Steven and Dianne Proctor as a tribute to his parents, for whom education was a priority. The Neale Chaney Slater Lecture Hall is named in memory of the son of CSM Alumnus and Foundation Director Austin “Joe” Slater, Jr., in recognition of the $100,000 planned gift to the CSM Foundation that will provide scholarships for future generations. The CE Building will be the new home for the Social Sciences and Public Services Division, the Division of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, the Small Business Development Center, The Corporate Center, and the Planning, Institutional Effectiveness, and Research Department. FROM T H E O F F I C E O F TH E PRES ID EN T ( PRE) Message from the President As we head into the holiday season, I want to wish all of you a happy Thanksgiving. I also want to make you aware of two decisions that the President’s Council has made recently, which may influence your holiday shopping: 1. Effective January 1, 2015, all regularly benefited non-faculty employees will receive a 1% market adjustment that will be added to their base salaries. We may add as much as an additional 1% to base or as a one-time allocation in February, depending on how the spring enrollment looks. (Note: Faculty received a half-step increase in July 2014.) 2. Because our health insurance claims this year have been modest in relation to employees and the college's health insurance premium contributions, our current healthcare fund balance is robust and higher than required. Since the college is self-insured, we are declaring two “premium holidays” which means health insurance premiums will not be deducted from paychecks issued on December 4 and December 18 (for pay periods ending November 29 and December 13). Depending on how the claims continue tracking in 2015, we may declare additional “premium holidays” in the future. We hope that this tangible benefit provides an incentive for our employees and their families to continue leading healthy lifestyles. It is my pleasure to share this news with you as 2014 comes to a close. However, please note that these decisions were made very thoughtfully as we continue to deal with a flattening enrollment trend and unclear political landscape with many changes in the 2015 legislative leadership, both at the local and state level. So,as we end this semester and prepare for the spring semester, I encourage each employee to look for ways to advance the college, to economize on expenses and to encourage our students to persist in their educational pursuits. SETC hosts auditions for nearly 90 professional theaters searching for talented actors. In order to qualify for auditions as a college student, LaClair participated in a professional screening through SETC and learned in October that he was chosen. LaClair has a film degree from the Boston University Center for Digital Imaging Arts’ satellite campus in Washington, D.C. and creates video trailers for CSM theatrical productions when he is not working as a freelance videographer. He ventured into acting by participating in community theater which in turn led to CSM. He is working on an associate degree in theater. This February, LaClair was chosen by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (KCACTF) nominating committee to compete with more than 250 other thespians for the Irene Ryan Acting Award. That was LaClair’s second appearance at the KCACTF in three years and his most productive. He auditioned for the Music Theatre Initiative and the New Playwright Program, and he wrote and directed “The War of Rose Cycle in One Act” for Devised Theatre.
