The tourism industry is the life blood of our region. We need it, and at
times are required to defend it. When tragedy strikes and it does from time to
time, the knives come out. With good reason when negligence is the cause.
The adventure tourism industry that many of us rely on has gone through
more than its fair share of tragedy - in the air, on the water and on the land.
The reaction from operators voluntarily and compulsorily in more recent times
under strict government regulations has resulted in a safer industry today
than a few years ago. When you are not killing your customers the industry is
obviously more sustainable commercially and therefore more valuable to our
economy.
However a tourism related industry requiring a bit of defending is the rental
vehicle industry. This seems to be a hard task to regulate because in my
opinion, the industry does not help themselves with their willingness to rent
vehicles to almost anyone with a licence regardless of their ability to drive.
Giving non English speakers a brochure on New Zealand road rules that they
may or may not read is not good enough.
Statistics show the percentage of fatalities involving tourists on New Zealand
roads is less than 2%. In a metropolitan region like Auckland, that percentage
would be even smaller. It is therefore not an issue for the majority of New
Zealanders and the Government do nothing. However in our region the
percentage of road fatalities involving tourists is closer to 25%. That is one in
four. Given the enormity of that number and in the wake of the tragic death of
three visitors from Hong Kong near Wanaka last week, not to mention the injury
rates and near miss rates, it was incredibly disappointing to hear on the radio
news, the self-proclaimed voice of the tourism industry, the Tourism Industry
Association of NZ defending the fatality rates for foreign drivers. It is insulting
to the people living in and around tourism hotspots, like Queenstown and
Wanaka, to have tourism industry spokespeople brush off such tragic events
with the reasoning that more Kiwis kill Kiwis on our roads than foreign tourists.

That is like saying more people drown at Piha Beach in Auckland than tourists
river surfing the Kawarau River, so why regulate river surfing? The tourism
industry cannot continue to wash their hands of the problem. Tourists and kiwis
alike are in danger every day on our road network because of this issue and
the Tourism Industry Association should also know it is not good business to
kill your customers. As regulations have tightened around adventure tourism,
so should control around vehicle rental. It is the obvious thing to do.

Parking Ticket
QLDC are really getting strapped for cash? Or
just saving up for their Xmas staff party! So I
get home Friday evening to find my car has a
parking ticket on it. I live at the top of Fernhill
in a culdesac with only two street lamps and a
footpath on one side of the street and I have a
ticket for parking facing the wrong way!
I agree this rule makes sense on roads where
traffic can pass each other in both directions and
on busy roads, but my street you can only fit
one vehicle down at a time anyway!
The only reason I park facing that way is because
there is no footpath on my side, just a steep
grass bank and it is incredibly difficult to unload
a baby out the car against a grass bank. Looks
like I’ll have to park a meter from the kerb from
now on (I’m sure there’s a ticket for that too).

the single income household and taking extra
money we don’t have for your Xmas do!

Response from QLDC
QLDC’s parking officers patrol across the
district every day, with the main focus being on
the CBD. They do also patrol residential areas
and respond to complaints.
As you’ve said, parking a car facing the wrong
way is an offence because it’s a safety risk and
although the risk on your road may not be
as great as on a main street, we have to be
consistent in how we enforce the law. We
certainly don’t target single income car owners –
for that matter, we don’t target wealthy people
either, we treat everyone the same. We prefer
to educate people but if we weren’t consistent,
the next whinge on this page would be from
someone who’d received a ticket complaining
that our parking staff were turning a blind eye to
other people doing the same thing.

So I’m an avid Mountain Biker, lived in
Queenstown for a few years now & witnessed
the huge growth in Mountain biking over that
time. The local MTB scene is awesome with
heaps of riders now coming from all over the
world to shred here for a week, a summer
& beyond. (Big thanks must go out to the
QMTBC for their effort in creating our amazing
dirt playground)
The only stain on an otherwise positive &
vibrant scene, is the negative & controlling
actions of some people heavily involved in
the Queenstown MTB industry. After doing
a little research & talking to other riders around
town, it seems that this is not a recent issue, &
discontent & anger with the influence & control
