From the Pastor… I made it a point to go to Veteran’s park this morning for part of the Veteran’s Day service. There is something about being in the presence of and near the gathered vets, a kind of gravitas borne out of their camaraderie and experiences, both military ones and life at large. I went, knowing that the “In Flanders Fields” poem would be read. It was written on May 3, 1915 by Canadian physician Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, after he presided at the funeral of his friend who died in the Second Battle of Ypres. It refers to red poppies growing over the graves of fallen soldiers, helping to make red poppies one of the most recognized memorial symbols in the world. Indeed, some of the most impressive poetry and writing came from the ashes of that oblivion called the First World War. The Great War was in many ways the death of innocence for the civilized world and the shaping event of the world to come (you have probably gathered by now that I am fascinated by that particular conflict, as many of you are with Second World War). Reading that poem from “the war to end all wars” reminds us of the many other fields, oceans, and airways of battle since that time, and the fallen soldiers and service people who didn’t return from them or who returned from them totally changed. Please Bring Extra Food to Share. We do well to remember the root meaning of remember: to “re-member,” to put back together. In this way, remembering is spiritual work, and not for the faint of heart. We move on with life and the demands of the day. We do not – we dare not – forget. How essential it is for people of faith to not only remember, but to open our attention to God as we do so and to bring our experience into God’s presence. This is the work of prayer on the very personal level. When you are tired, when you are angry, or lonely, disappointed, grieving, it is so important to pause, be still, open to God, and allow the honest feelings to flow. We want to remember and we long to “be re-membered.” We want to know our lives matter. We seek to pray the story of our lives, and this includes remembering the ones we knew and didn’t know who allowed us to have a story at all. Be still and acknowledge God. Pray your story (use the Psalms as a resource). Then, as the Spirit assists, come into his presence with thanksgiving. In so doing, you and I join in with the great cloud of witnesses who teach us about sacrifice and honor. In that presence is our strength, our well-being, our hope. Have a good week and keep the faith! Rick Page 2 Children’s News…. A Word from Jason… Please join us for Sunday School at 9am!!!
