Dear Friends,
It seems the public media likes to take great delight when there
appears to be a dissension within the Roman Catholic Church,
especially among its hierarchy. It uses these instances to “stir the pot,”
hoping to polarize Catholics even more than they are as they emphasize
two extreme camps: liberal and conservative, reformed and traditional.
We saw evidence of this when the news media reported on last month’s two-week
Extraordinary Synod called by Pope Francis to prepare for the next year’s October Regular Synod
on marriage and family life. As is often the case, the news media took comments out of context and
incorrectly communicated the subject matter. In their accounts, the media tried to hype such issues
as homosexuality, same-sex marriages and remarriage of divorced Catholics.
Pope Francis called this Extraordinary Synod to foster greater dialogue and discussion, even
on the sensitive issues to which I just alluded. In and of itself this synod had no authoritative power.
Nor were any of its contents binding on church teaching. It simply was a chance for people, clergy
and laity, to share their ideas and reactions.
It would be naïve of me to think that there were not going to be opposing views among
members of that synod. When the synod was ending, some bishops were quite vocal in contesting
the more radical views that were expressed during the two-week session. And they showed it when
they voted down certain recommendations.
This came as no surprise since these bishops were trying to remain faithful to the Church’s
teaching, especially on issues like marriage. Marriage was meant by God to be between a man and
a woman, established by God in creation, affirmed by revelation and raised to a sacrament by Jesus
Himself.
One of the more contentious critics of the synod was Cardinal Raymond Burke, the former
archbishop of St. Louis. Once again, the news media has used Cardinal Burke to rally the troops
against the Church and sow seed of dissension.
Cardinal Burke was brought to Rome by Pope Benedict XVI and made head of the Church’s
highest court of law, the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura, similar to the U.S. Supreme
Court. He was also appointed by Pope Benedict to the Congregation for the Office of Bishops, one
of the most influential congregations in the Church since it selects and recommends the names of
bishops worldwide to be appointed by the Holy Father.
Earlier this year, Pope Francis removed Cardinal Burke from his position on the
Congregation for Bishops. One could suspect that the cardinal’s ultra-conservative choices were
not in alignment with Pope Francis’ more moderate appointments and thinking.
Most recently, Pope Francis removed Cardinal Burke as head of the Signatura and made him
patron of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, a largely ceremonial office. This change was
probably prompted by the cardinal’s remarks to the news media in which he described Pope
Francis’ pontificate as “a ship without a rudder.”
Even bishops and cardinals must be careful how they address the public news media. They,
too, can be and often are taken out of context. Certainly there needs to be transparency. And
bishops and cardinals have a right to free speech and to express their point of view. But it doesn’t
do church officials or the Church any good to “air the Church’s dirty laundry.” Doing that only
contributes to the distortion of the truth by the news media and plays into their polarizing agenda.
If you want to know what is accurately being reported about the Catholic Church, please
don’t resort to the public news media. Instead, explore the website of official church news agencies,
The Long Island Catholic magazine, or ask your parish priest.

Dear All of You,
The first reading from the Book of Proverbs can be a bit misleading. It speaks of
that devoted wife who cares for her husband. It appears that she fulfills his every need.
The scripture also mentions that in addition, this loving woman reaches out to the poor and
needy.
This may not sit well with a number of people, especially women who seek equality;
but the wife in the story does not represent the role of women in a marriage. The good wife is the maternal,
feminine face of God; known to many as Wisdom.
Absolutely it does not say that God is a woman . . . or a man. It would be an injustice to limit God to a
particular gender.
This woman in the Book of Proverbs models for all of us, both male and female, the loving commitment of
God to us. God is loving, nurturing, and will go to any length to provide for everyone of us.
The message to us is that if we care for one another to the best of our ability and if we take
responsibility for the poor and needy, we too will be rewarded for our labors and become reassured of our own
value.

Level I Confirmation Parents’ Meeting — There is a meeting on
Monday, November 17 at 7:00pm in the auditorium. Parents will
be introduced to the new Confirmation Preparation Program —
“Chosen.” We will also discuss the requirements for preparing
for Confirmation. The students do not attend this meeting.
Classes for Grades 2—6 and Confirmation Level I will take place as scheduled
this week.
First Grade — Please Note: There are no classes for First Grade until March,
2015.
On-Line Students — Parents should have received email instructions from My
Catholic Faith Delivered by this week. If you have not yet received them, please
call the FFE Office at 581-3304, x121. You will have until the end of June to
complete the on-line chapters.
Mass Attendance — Every student in every grade, whether on-line or in class,
must attend a minimum of 15 Masses during the school year. Coupons can be
found in the wicker baskets in the Church and in the Auditorium. Please have your
child complete the coupon and place it in the Collection Basket. We use those
coupons to track Mass attendance.

Question: Ordinary Time makes up
most of the liturgical year in the
Catholic Church.
What does
Ordinary Time mean?
Answer: Ordinary Time is called “ordinary” simply
because the weeks are numbered. The Latin word
ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series, stems
from the Latin word ordo, from which we get the
English word order. Thus, Ordinary Time is in fact the
ordered life of the Church. It’s appropriate, therefore,
that the Gospel for the Second Sunday of Ordinary
Time (which is actually the first Sunday celebrated in
Ordinary Time) always features either John the
Baptist’s acknowledgment of Christ as the Lamb of
God or Christ’s first miracle—the transformation of
water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana. Thus for
Catholics, Ordinary Time is the part of the year in
which Christ, the Lamb of God, walks among us and
transforms our lives. That’s why there’s nothing
“ordinary” about Ordinary Time.

RECEIVES TOP INTERNATIONAL AWARD
Knights of Columbus, Assumption Council #5252 of East Islip/Islip Terrace has earned the distinction of Triple Star Council for
the 2013-14 fraternal year. The award was presented to Grand Knight Jerry Blum at a council meeting on September 22 by
District Deputy Michael Tully. The award recognizes overall excellence in the areas of membership recruitment (reaching
300% of quota, thereby making it a “triple star”) and retention, promotion of the fraternal insurance program and sponsoring of
service-oriented activities. Only two councils in the entire State of NY received this praiseworthy award for 2013-14 fraternal
year.
In announcing the Assumption Council as one of the two winners of the Triple Star Council Award, Carl A. Anderson, chief
executive officer of the organization saID, “Please accept my sincere congratulations upon attaining this prestigious award.
Your dedication to the Order is seen in the high standard of excellence you have achieved. At the same time, I encourage you
to carry forward this enthusiasm to meet the challenges that will face the Knights of Columbus in the years ahead. May this
award be a reminder and an inspiration to the members of your council to continue to promote the ideals of Columbianism for
the good of the Church, your community, and the Order.”
