National IMPHAL, SUNDAY 09 NOVEMBER, 2014 5 BJP, Sena bury hatchet, Anil Desai Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar sworn in as Goa's CM to join Union Cabinet Who is Laxmikant Parsekar? Press Trust of India MUMBAI, Nov 8: BJP and Shiv Sena on Saturday appeared to have resolved their differences with the latter deciding to nominate Rajya Sabha member Anil Desai to be included in the Union Cabinet when Prime Minister Narendra Modi reshuffles and expands his ministry on Sunday. After blowing hot and cold over the last few days, the party also looked agreeable to accepting a power-sharing arrangement in Maharashtra. "Uddhavji (Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray) had initially decided that we will not recommend any name to be included in the Modi Cabinet unless talks at the state level reach a conclusion. "But now since the talks are finally in a conclusive mode, we have changed our stand. Our leader has decided to recommend Anil Desai's name so he can be included in the Cabinet tomorrow," a Sena MP said on condition of anonymity. He said the party leader- ship will decide the second name to be included in the Union Council of Ministers by evening. The Prime Minister's Office had on Thursday asked Shiv Sena to recommend two names to be included in the Union government and the party had said it would be forwarding those the next day. However, with back channel talks failing to resolve issues between the two parties over power-sharing in Maharashtra, Uddhav had appeared disinclined to nominate any leader to be included in the Union government. The Sena MP said talks between the estranged former allies in Maharashtra had reached a 'conclusive stage' and a decision on supporting the BJP government during the trust vote scheduled for November 12 will be taken by the party chief on Sunday. Uddhav Thackeray has called a meeting of newly elected Shiv Sena MLAs and top leaders on Sunday to deliberate on the developments. "Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis called up Uddhavji and said they want us to be a part of the new government and that they are not interested in taking the support of NCP. We have been offered 12 ministerial berths of which 5 will be of Cabinet rank and 7 ministers of state," he said. It was, however, still not clear if Sena had given up on its demand for deputy chief ministership. BJP had earlier rejected Sena's demand for following the 1995 formula when being the junior partner it had got the post of deputy chief minister. BJP with 121 MLAs in the 288-member assembly is the single largest party but way short of the magic figure of 145 despite support of 7 independents and some from smaller parties. 41-member NCP has declared outside support to the new government. However, the 63 MLAstrong Sena coming on board will obviate the need for backing from Sharad Pawar's party. PM Narendra Modi to meet Suu Kyi in Myanmar Press Trust of India New Delhi, Nov 8: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will meet Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi among other leaders on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asian summits in Myanmar next week in his first interaction with the prodemocracy icon. Modi leaves for Myanmar on November 11 on the first leg of his three-nation ten-day visit that will also take him to Australia and Fiji. External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin replied in the affirmative when asked at a media briefing whether Prime Minister Modi will meet Aung San Suu Kyi. "The Prime Minister will be meeting Aung San Suu Kyi," he said. Modi is also due to have a meeting with the host nation's President Thein Sein. The spokesperson said the prime minister is extremely keen to meet as many people as possible during his foreign visits and there will be several meetings on the sidelines of the multilateral events. Modi will be also attending the G-20 summit in Brisbane on November 1516. Myanmar is in the midst of a national debate on whether to allow Suu Kyi, an opposition leader, to contest the 2015 parliamentary elections, which she is barred from at present, due to a provision in the Constitution. Suu Kyi had visited India in November 2012. Myanmar is one of India's most important neighbours, both for security and as a gateway to Southeast Asia. An ambitious project is underway to develop a 3,200km highway linking India, Myanmar and Thailand. It was originally envisaged to be completed around 2017 but it is behind schedule and is now expected to be completed in 2018. The 12th ASEAN-India summit and the 9th East Asian summit will take place in Nay Pyi Taw on November 12 and November 13 respectively. Press Trust of India PANAJI, Nov 8 Goa Health Minister Laxmikant Parsekar has been sworn in as the state's next Chief Minister. Parsekar was earlier chosen unanimously as the chief ministerial candidate, BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy announced today after a legislature party meeting. The BJP's central leaders BS Yeddyurappa and Mr Rudy acted as observers at the meeting to elect the new Chief Minister. (Who is Laxmikant Parsekar?) Manohar Parrikar, who is expected to become the next Defence Minister of the country, earlier resigned as Goa Chief Minister. Mr Parrikar faxed his resignation letter to Governor Mridula Sinha at Raj Bhavan this afternoon, after meeting the Archbishop. 4 Armymen, civilian trapped under avalanche near LoC Admitting that he wasn't surprised about the decision, Mr Parsekar told NDTV, "I knew I would be elected as Chief Minister". "I have been BJP worker for 25 years, I'm a worthy candidate," he said. "Being a member of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh) was one of the criteria to be elected as the Chief Minister," said the newly-appointed Chief Minister and legislator from Mandrem constituency. With Mr Parrikar's resignation, the entire state cabinet comprising 12 ministers, two of whom were from Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party, was dissolved. Deputy CM Francis D'Souza, who had earlier said that he expected to be named the Chief Minister today, will continue in his post. PANAJI, Nov 8: Laxmikant Parsekar, who had rebelled against his family to contest on a BJP ticket while fighting his first Assembly election in 1988, has reaped the reward for his loyalty to the party with his election as Chief Minister of Goa. The 58-year-old leader, who has a strong connection to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is the 22nd Chief Minister of the politically volatile state and the 12th person to hold the post. Branded a 'rebel', Parsekar started his political journey in the 1980s, treading a path that his family strongly disapproved of when he had his first tryst with elections in 1988 from Mandrem constituency as a BJP candidate. He was pitted against Ramakant Khalap, an influential politician in the state polity, and lost. Parsekar's decision to contest as a candidate of the BJP, then a virtual non-entity in the coastal state, was received with shock by his family and the village, an MGP stronghold. He began working for the BJP in late 80s and was instrumental in building the party's support base along with veterans like Manohar Parrikar, Rajendra Arlekar, now Goa Assembly Speaker, and Sripad Naik, Union Minister for Tourism. "I lost miserably from Mandrem in 1988. My entire family rooted for MGP. Even one of the trucks used by the MGP candidate for campaigning was owned by my father," said Parsekar, who Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) Bachelor or Social Work (BSW) Bachelor Preparatory Programme (BPP) For Advanced Diploma, PG Diploma and Certificate programmes For details, visit IGNOU Website or Regional Centre Website Buy Prospectus from Regional Centre; In person: Rs.200/-; By post: Rs.250/- Tse/bill-9 "...I was looked upon as a rebel" was Health Minister in the Parrikar Government. He lost again in the Assembly polls in 1999. By then, the BJP had become an established player in the coastal State, notorious for political volatility and defections, which often led to toppling of Govts. "My only consolation was that I managed to save my deposit," Parsekar said. Undeterred by the setback, he contested for the Assembly election in 2002 and emerged a giant killer, defeating MGP's Ramakant by a wafer-thin margin of 750 votes. In 2007, he doubled his victory margin and was reelected in 2012 when the BJP posted a remarkable victory, winning 21 of the 40 Assembly seats. Parsekar, who then headed the Goa unit of the BJP, was rewarded with a Cabinet berth in the BJP-MGP coalition Govt led by Parrikar. Parsekar's unflinching loyalty to the BJP and strong RSS links saw him quell a challenge from Deputy Chief Minister Francis D'Souza and take over the Chief Minister's chair. 1st DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF Pu HENKHOLEN SITLHOU Press Trust of India SRINAGAR, Nov 8: Four Army personnel and a civilian were today trapped under an avalanche near the Line of Control (LoC) in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, Army said.
