Vicki’s Voice
Board of Directors
By Vicki Hardesty, Executive Director
Sacrifices of Love
As we move through this fall season and into the holiday months, my prayer for you is
to breathe deeply and relax with the scents of the seasons. I pray you will take a moment for yourself away from the business of the day and enjoy the peacefulness. As you
do these things please remember all those who may not be as fortunate as you and keep
them in your prayers.
Birthright sees many women in poverty. Some live on the streets or in run-down apartments or shelters. They come needing our help and we try and meet the needs as best
we can, but it takes money.
We are behind in our budget by almost $30,000. We pray we can make up the difference by the end of the year, but maybe you can help. I know so many of you are already
generous to Birthright.
I am asking if you could increase your yearly donation by at least $20. This would help
with a portion of the deficit. You may say to me, “I am giving all I can.” To that, I say,
“Thank you and please keep us closely in your prayers.” For many people $20 is a few
cups of coffee from Starbucks or a lunch at a restaurant. This is sacrifice made for those
in poverty and given with love.

A Story of Hardship and of Love
A Client Story
Brandi is 19 years old and has grown up in foster care, but she has
aged out of the program. She lived on the street for about a year and
then moved in with her boyfriend.
Brandi’s boyfriend is now in jail and she is again homeless. Birthright
paid for her to stay in a hotel for a week while we tried to find her
some help. Fortunately, a Christian family heard of her situation and
invited her to stay for a month while MIFA processed paperwork.
Shelters will not accept her because she is 7 months pregnant and
they worry about liability. Brandi is a sweet young woman who is
very shy and has no support system. I am not sure what she will do
after the baby is born if she does not get into transitional housing.
She also faces the possibility of going to the hospital alone when she
goes into labor. For those of us who are “prepared” for pregnancy it
is scary enough, but put yourself in her shoes.
Brandi is going to need a lot of help after she has the baby. She owns
nothing more than a backpack of clothing. Birthright will help her
with the baby items she will need and other resources available to
her.
It is a sad story but Brandi is not the only woman coming to Birthright
without any support system or the comfort of a roof over her head.
Many young women fall into the cracks of the social service systems.
It must be so scary to be 19, alone, homeless and pregnant. It is so
important for each of us to feel love and acceptance.
