November 2014 Believe it or not, the holiday season is already upon us. While life can become more hectic, it is also a time to slow down and appreciate what truly matters most in our lives. For most, God, family and friends top the list. Where our students are concerned, a quality education and spiritual formation are also things for which we are grateful. As you know, the education and formation of our young people have for many years been a principal emphasis of our Diocesan family. Through the remarkable faith, leadership and sacrifices of our priests, sisters, and lay faithful, we have been truly blessed for decades to live in a stewardship Diocese that provides a K-12 Catholic education through the generous, sacrificial and proportionate support of parishioners. This stewardship model forms the nucleus around which Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School currently operates. Unbeknownst to many, however, there exists a $500 gap between the amount provided to Kapaun Mt. Carmel through parish support, fees and other income, and the actual cost to provide a Catholic high school education. That is the principal reason why the Kapaun Mt. Carmel Annual Fund was created, and it remains the focus of our efforts to grow the KMC Annual Fund. This year, we are unveiling a lot of renewed energy and ideas around the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund is now led by our new Director of Development, Chenay Dixon ’95 Sloan. As an alumnus of KMC, Mrs. Sloan understands the springboard to success that a KMC education gives to a young person. As a parent of future Crusaders, Mrs. Sloan brings a great perspective for the future and has a unique incentive to help us realize our mission and vision for our school. She is a wonderful addition to our team, and I hope you all get the opportunity to meet her soon and share with her your love for Kapaun Mt. Carmel. In this edition of the Crusader Connection, Mrs. Sloan will introduce you to the 2014-15 KMC Annual Fund. I invite you to take in her comments and be introduced to her passion for the advancement of the KMC mission. We are indeed truly blessed at KMC. We have much for which to be grateful. We understand expectations are high, and we thank God for our community who sacrifices so much to help our mission. May God bless you during this holiday season, and may He continue to bestow His blessings on Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School. Rob Knapp President K A PAU N M T. C A R M E L Bridging the Gap CATHOLIC HIGH S C H O O L crusader connection ........................ d. .e. .v. .e. .l. .o. . p. . .m ent news .................. In my first weeks at Kapaun Mt. Carmel Catholic High School, I had the pleasure of meeting with several of our experienced KMC families and some of our new ones as well. When we talked about the KMC Annual Fund, I was struck by the fact that many of them did not fully understand the true need for and reason behind the Annual Fund. I saw that we had to provide education in order to generate the excitement that is needed for a successful Annual Fund appeal. The Annual Fund is an important piece of KMC’s operations. Here at KMC, we are very blessed to be able to provide a Catholic education to any Catholic student who desires such an outstanding education, and who is an active and participating steward in his or her parish. We are not like Catholic high schools in other dioceses, where thousands of dollars are required from each and every student. We operate under the wonderful spirituality of stewardship, which allows us to open the doors of our high school wide to Catholic students, regardless of their economic status. In our school funding, there exists a gap of about $500 per student. Our parishes sacrificially fund our school, but the truth is that the cost of educating a high school student to the standards expected of and by KMC exceeds such funding by about $500 per student. This year’s Annual Fund theme, then, is Bridge The Gap. In the coming weeks, you will receive information on how you can help us Bridge The Gap for Catholic education here at KMC. The Annual Fund is an essential source of funds that allows us to fulfill our mission - to educate and form the total person in the image of Jesus Christ. Your participation - in the form of a taxdeductible gift - is very important to us. Contributions are not set aside and “saved” for the future. Gifts will support every aspect of the school’s mission and provide KMC with the resources today to enrich the learning environment and keep our doors open as wide as possible to Catholic students. KMC Spirit Store www.kapaun.org Each day, our talented and dedicated faculty works tirelessly to deliver our superior college preparatory program. In addition, we strive for excellence in everything we do while ensuring that every student is known and loved. Find “Spirit Store” in the “Quick Links” box! financial aid night for seniors & parents Please join me in making a pledge or gift to the Kapaun Mt. Carmel Annual Fund. No amount is too small, and every gift will make a difference. A financial aid night for seniors and their parents will be held on Wednesday, November 19 at 7:00 p.m. in the KMC Commons FREE OF CHARGE! Attendees will benefit through a presentation on how to fill out FAFSA (Free Application for Student Aid), your resource for receiving possible college scholarships, grants, lowinterest loans, or work study from the federal or state government. A Newman University representative from the financial aid office will conduct the presentation. Again thank you for your commitment to KMC. I hope you find it in your heart to give. Warm regards and my best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.
