A LETTER FROM BISHOP JAMES V.
JOHNSTON, JR.
Dear Parishioners of St. Peter Parish, Joplin:
I am deeply grateful to all of you who
donated to our 2014 Diocesan Development
Fund Appeal (DDF). Thanks to your
generosity, we have raised, to date,
$2,470.064 which is 98% of our diocesan
goal. This total represents generous gifts
from a number of our families in southern
Missouri. Your support of diocesan
ministries in the Catholic Church in southern
Missouri is indeed very gratifying and
humbling.
At St. Peter Parish, 209 parishioners pledged
a total of $66,553.16, exceeding the parish
goal. Congratulations! May our loving God
continue to reward you for your generosity
throughout this new year.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend James V. Johnston, Jr.
Bishop of Springfield-Cape Girardeau
Second Collection in support of
Catholic Charities of Southern
Missouri

and many others. It is our goal to respond to
all with Christ-like compassion, expertise
and resources. Only through your support
can we make that happen! Please be
generous when the second collection is taken
at Masses next weekend. Thank you for your
prayers and your support.

This Tuesday, November 18th, is the feastday of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne (1769-1852),
one of the patron saints of our diocese. Duchesne was born in Grenoble, France where
she joined the Madames of the Sacred Heart (founded by Madeleine Sophie Barat). In
1818, Madame Duchesne came to New Orleans with several other Sisters at the invitation
of the bishop of New Orleans. The Sisters established several foundations in southern
Louisiana and established a foundation on the Missouri River at St. Charles, MO, near St.
Louis. In 1841 the Jesuits invited the Madames to join them in building a school for the
Potawatomi Indians in eastern Kansas on Sugar Creek. Though age 73 and in frail health,
Madame Duchesne volunteered. The Jesuits accepted her generosity believing that her
prayers alone would assure the success of the mission. Recognizing her holiness, the Potowatomi called her “Woman-Who-Prays-Always”. Madame Duchesne died in St. Charles,
MO, at age 83. (from Give Us This Day, November 2014, p. 184 and en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
