King and Judge
November 23, 2014
CHRIST THE KING
Today’s our liturgical year comes to a close. Next week is the First Sunday of
Advent and the start of a new liturgical year (Cycle B). The Gospel presents Jesus
as both a “King” and a “Judge,” when at the Great Judgment all the na ons will
be gathered and divided into two groups, the “sheep” and the “goats.”
When the en re human race gathers for the Great Judgment, everyone - from
the first person to the last - will appear before the Risen Christ for an evalua on
of love, behavior, performance and ac ons, when words will not suffice
anymore. According to Jesus’ message:
Firstly, all people, no ma er their religion, affilia on or social posi on, will have
to appear before the King of kings.
Secondly, the measure by which we will be tested is clear. Jesus tells us what is
going to be on the final test: “What you did for the least of My brothers, you did
to Me,” nothing else.
We cannot separate Christ from others, our contemporaries, those in need, and
His Church. For us Chris ans, the Church is the concrete presence of Christ in
every age. Our fidelity or indifference to the Church’s message of love and mercy
is also fidelity or indifference to Christ.
Today’s Gospel is obviously not about “philanthropy” (the voluntary giving by an
individual or group to promote the common good and improve the quality of
life), but about “judgment” and the separa on of the “phony” from the “real.”
The sign that we are truly renewed by Christ - that our loyalty to Him is genuine,
that our prayer is authen c, that the Holy Spirit dwells in us - is not what we say
but what we do. How will we respond to the ques on: “Have you cared for the
least among you through the corporal and spiritual works of mercy?”
Thirdly, our parable offers disturbing informa on about the end of those le out
of the kingdom - not because they caused harm to those in need by promo ng
their hunger, nakedness or imprisonment, but because they did nothing!
This is a truly majes c and challenging parable:
· It is about Jesus the Judge of both history and every person’s history.
· It is about responsibility for one another in body and in spirit.
· It is about the difficult truth that we will be separated from God both for
doing wrong and for doing nothing.
This parable is both comfor ng and disturbing
because it teaches us that the proof of how much
we love the Lord and how much He is alive in us is
found not in spiritual words but in how we treat
others. Are we Christ to others?

African Harvest
This Sunday at the 11:15am Mass, members of our African
community bring up gi s to celebrate the gathering of the harvest.
People around the world have celebrated harvest fes vals as long
they have sowed and gathered food. For Americans, this harvest
fes val is called Thanksgiving. In Africa, it is religious in nature;
families take offertory gi s of farm produce and animals to the altar
at church. It`s a me of celebra on, thanksgiving, and sharing.

What About the Debt Reduc on/Mortgage Fund?
A number of you have inquired about this important fund.
Though we did not ask parishioners to formally pledge towards
this fund for 2015, we most gratefully will accept and strongly
encourage your ongoing support. The Debt Reduc on/
Mortgage, a.k.a. Green Envelope Fund is very important—it
goes directly to paying the monthly loan payment for our
Church and is not assessed by the Archdiocese. If you are able,
please con nue giving generously! Wondering how much to
give? We suggest one monthly Green Envelope gi , equal to
one weekly Offertory gi .

Comfort & Consola on: Care of the Sick & Dying
The Bishops of Maryland have released this pastoral le er, which
helps us talk with family and caregivers on end-of-life issues. It
focuses on the founda onal principles of the Church’s approach to
caring for the sick and dying. Originally published in 2007, the revised
booklet is available at www.mdcathcon.org/publica ons, along with
a summary Q & A brochure, a Legal Guide with prac cal advice for
comple ng an advance direc ve that reflects Catholic principles, and
a Catholic Declara on for Health Care Decision Making form which
may be used for documen ng end-of-life direc ves.
End of Life Issues: What Does the Church Say?
The Department of Life Issues of the Archdiocese has compiled a
series of four flyers to aid reflec on on end of life issues and what it
means to have a hopeful and holy death. Copies of these flyers are
on the table in the Church. Visit the website h p://www.adw.org/
transformfear for these and addi onal resources.
Catholic Cemeteries
Cemeteries help us recognize the uniquely Chris an understanding of
death. They are holy ground where our dearly departed await the
resurrec on of the body and where we remember and pray for them
in the hope that we will follow in their steps. Not the scary sites
depicted in Hollywood movies, cemeteries are a peaceful, prayerful
place. Visit our cemetery to pray for our dead and to learn about our
parish founders.
