St. Rose of Lima Parish Parroquia Santa Rosa de Lima In Christ, We are Bread for one another: Broken… we gather. Nourished… we reach out. ………………….....……………………………. En Cristo, Somos Pan para cada uno: Lo Dividimos… Nos Juntamos. Alimentados… tendemos la mano. Are You Sleeping? November 30, 2014 ADVENT 1 As we celebrate the 1st Sunday of Advent, a new liturgical year begins. We are offered a chance to rediscover that Christ’s entry into our lives is unfinished there is more we can unlock to Christ the Savior. Today Isaiah presents the anguish of Israel as he cries out on behalf of a people whose lives are in ruin, “Why do you let us wander from your ways?” “You’re the po er, we are the clay. Come down and shape us up.” It’s an Old Testament prayer for a Savior. The great gi s of spiritual revival, transforma on and renewal that we read about in the lives of the Saints come from their honest desire to become “the clay in the hands of the po er,” God. Those same gi s are available to us through the life of the Church, especially during Advent. Unfortunately, we can be asleep, uninterested or blind by self-sa sfac on to what God is ready to do in our life. The Lord teaches us to be alert to His presence, to “wake up and be on the watch.” Although the Lord refers to His coming in glory, His words can be also applied to the present. It’s easy for us to limit the coming of Christ to an event of 2,000 years ago, or to when the Lord will come at the end of history, and to ignore the ways the Lord comes to us today. We don’t have to scream out for Him to come. He is already here among us! We must reopen our minds and hearts to watch for signs of His special presence. Each me Scripture is proclaimed, the Lord speaks to us. Each me Mass is celebrated, the Lord is present with His redeeming love. Each me we receive Holy Communion, He promises us eternal life. Each me we encounter the sick, the poor, the lonely, the immigrant or the forgo en, He is in front of us. The start of the new Church year is a good me to make spiritual resolu ons as we prepare for Christmas: ▪ Is there bridge building we need to do? ▪ Are there important rela onships for which we need to show new respect, apprecia on and generosity? ▪ Is our prayer life in need of determina on, seriousness, consistency or structure? ▪ Do our Mass par cipa on and desire for Reconcilia on need renewed effort before Christmas? ▪ Are there a achments from which we need to separate ourselves? ▪ Are there sectors of our life that need more self-control, prayer and discipline? As we light the candles of the Advent wreath, the light of Christ will become stronger in us. Advent is not about the rebirth of Christ, but about the rebirth of our faith, of our commitment to Christ and His Church. Advent calls us to watch for God’s unexpected movement passing near us in many ways and through many people and needs. Do not let Him approach you and catch you asleep, spiritually unconscious, self-sa sfied or uninterested. 11701 Clopper Rd., Gaithersburg, MD 20878-1024 PHONE: 301-948-7545 FAX: 301-869-2170 EMERGENCIES (A er Hours): 301-355-8191 CANCELLATION INFORMATION: x307 WEBSITE: www.strose-parish.org EUCHARIST / EUCARISTÍA Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Monday-Friday................................... 8:30 am (English) 1er Viernes ........................................ 7:00 pm (Español) Sunday............................................... 7:15 am (English) 1er Dimanche................................... 10:00 am (Français) 2nd Sunday ........................................ 5:00 pm (Tagalog) Church / Iglesia Saturday Vigil ..................................... 5:00 pm (English) Sunday...... 8:45 am (English) & 11:15 am (English + ASL) Domingo ........................................... 1:00 pm (Español) RECONCILIATION / RECONCILIACIÓN Historic Chapel / Capilla Histórica Thursday........................ 7:00-9:00 pm (English/Español) Church / Iglesia Saturday ..................................... 4:00-4:30 pm (English) Domingo .................................... 2:15-3:15 pm (Español) BAPTISM PREPARATION / PREPARACIÓN PARA BAUTIZO Bap sm Classes Begin while pregnant or awai ng adop on.
