Louise S. Kortz, 1914-2013
Honored Hospital Pharmacist
Louise Schmitz Kortz, 99, of Rochester, retired pharmacist of Saint Mary’s Hospital, died
Wednesday, May 22, 2013, of heart failure at her
Madonna Towers residence.
Louise Frances Schmitz was born Feb. 23,
1914, in Wells, the second child of George Louis
Schmitz and Mary Margaret (Mame) Hines
Schmitz. In 1929 the Schmitz family moved to
Minneapolis where Louise attended Central
High School and discovered her interest in
pharmacy while working weekends at WalKortz
green’s Nicollet/Lake Drug Store. She attended
the University of Minnesota, earned her degree
from the School of Pharmacy and passed all examinations for
her State Pharmacy License on July 6, 1936. (The day was one
of the hottest in Minnesota’s history, 114 degrees F in Moorhead
and 104 degrees in Minneapolis.) Her first hospital pharmacy
position was at Saint Barnabus in Minneapolis.
In 1942 Louise was asked by the War Production Board to
move to Washington, D.C., where she worked for the duration
of World War II and later for the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA). She enjoyed playing Contract Bridge throughout her life, and it was during a game of cards in Washington
that Louise met her husband, Philip M. Kortz, Lieutenant Commander in the Navy from Pennsylvania. They were married on
June 21, 1947, at Incarnation Catholic Church in Minneapolis
and then moved to Rochester, where Louise worked as a hospital pharmacist and Philip taught at Rochester Junior College.
Among her many achievements, Louise facilitated the distribution of antibiotics during wartime and was instrumental in
developing hospital pharmacy automations and best practices
at health care facilities. In 1975 Louise was appointed by Governor Wendell Anderson to the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy
and in 1983 was chosen as honorary chair of the APhA Board of
Directors. She proudly served her profession and retained her
pharmacy license for a total of 50 years.
Louise’s long life and positive attitude were achieved by her
focus on spiritual faith; unlimited benevolence; appreciation of
violets and pansies; delight in arts and history; joy of winning
hands at bridge and the unconditional love she shared with family and friends.
Survivors include two daughters, Jane Kortz, of Seattle,
Wash., and Elaine Kortz (John Hammond), of Plymouth; two
sons, James, of Woodbury, and David (Andrew Rogosheske), of
Minneapolis; grandson, Matthew, of Woodbury; sister, Dorothy
Wolf, of North Oaks; brother, Robert (Geri) Schmitz, of Palm
Springs, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Dolores Schmitz, of Crystal, and
Joan Schmitz, of Roseville; and many nieces and nephews.
Louise was preceded in death by her husband; three brothers,
Thomas, George and Daniel; daughter-in-law, Catherine Shipman Kortz; sister-in-law, Marie Schmitz; and brother-in-law,
Richard Wolf.
Louise, Philip and family were longtime members of The
Church of St. John The Evangelist in Rochester.
Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, May
31, at 1 p.m. at Madonna Towers Chapel, 4001 19th Ave. N.W. in
Rochester, with the Rev. James Russell officiating. Reception will
follow.
Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Friends may gather from
noon to 1 p.m. before the funeral Mass.
Memorials preferred to Madonna Towers Foundation, U of M
School of Pharmacy or the charity of donor’s choice.

Barbara Stoltz, 78, of Plainview, died Thursday, May 23, 2013,
at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Barbara Ruth Grabow was born Sept. 6, 1934,
in Olivia, to Ervin and Olive (Dodge) Grabow.
Barb graduated from Elgin High School. On
June 16, 1953, she married Ralph Stoltz in Elgin. They made their home in Plainview. Barb
was a longtime sales representative for Avon.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Elgin and the Ladies Aid. She was a
longtime member of the Plainview American
Legion Ladies Auxiliary and had been on the
board of the Plainview Public Library and
Stoltz
the Plainview Community Center. She enjoyed
gardening, golf, swimming and her pets, Sadie
and Jelly.
Survivors include two daughters, Vicky (Todd) Hennessey, of
Buffalo, N.Y., and Deborah Stoltz, of St. Louis, Mo.; and one son,
Clayton (Konnie) Stoltz, of Midland, Texas. Five grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Kathy Grabow, of Ormond Beach, Fla., also survive.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one
grandson.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 28, at 11 a.m. at
Trinity Lutheran Church in Elgin, with the Rev. Terrill Bramstedt officiating. Burial will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
The visitation will be Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Schad
& Zabel Funeral Home in Plainview, and one hour prior to the
service at the church on Tuesday.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the American
Cancer Society.

Marion L. Forderbrugen — Rochester
Marion L. Forderbrugen, 90, of Rochester, formerly of
Owatonna, died Monday, May 20, 2013 at Seasons Hospice in
Rochester.
Marion was born in Mankato
on Oct. 21, 1922, to William and
Selma (Olson) Meixner. She
married Kevin Forderbrugen
on April 6, 1962, in Brookings,
S.D. Mrs. Forderbrugen and
her husband moved to Owatonna in 1967. They had lived
in Cloquet since 1962. Marion
was a private secretary for 21
years in Mankato and the last
11 years for the U.S. government in Internal Revenue and
the Post Office Regional Office
in Minneapolis.
Marion and Kevin were
members of Trinity Lutheran
Church in Owatonna since
1967.
Marion is survived by three
Forderbrugen
stepdaughters, Diane Kevorkian, Carol Black and Mary Wells,
and their children, all of Irvine, Calif.; and several nieces and
nephews.
Marion is preceded in death by her husband in 1983; her parents; a sister, Arline Hunziker, and a brother, William Meixner.
A funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 30, at
Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Homes in Rochester. Visitation will
be held two hours prior to the service at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Mankato.

Rachel Lynne Geier — Wanamingo
Rachel Lynne Geier, 65, of Wanamingo, died Thursday, May
23, 2013, at Saint Marys Hospital.
Rachel Lynne Bjugan was born Sept. 25,
1947, in Red Wing, to Robert and Ruth (Lubahn)
Bjugan. She lived in Zumbrota until 1962,
then moved to Rochester with her parents and
graduated from John Marshall in 1965. In 1974
she married Larry Victor Geier. She worked at
Rochester State Hospital as a psychiatric tech.
After that closed she went to Faribault State
Hospital. She also ran a group home in West
Concord. The last few years she has worked at
Riverview in Wanamingo.

She loved spending time with family and
friends, her flower garden, watching the Minnesota Twins and having conversations with her grand puppy,
Annie.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; brother, Richard
Bjugan, of Iowa; her son, Chad Geier, of Minneapolis; daughter,
Sheila Geier, of Rochester; stepson, Richard (Rynn) Geier, of
Rochester; stepdaughters, Dawn (Todd) Johannsen, of Rochester, and Lisa Geier, of Wisconsin; and four grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Ruth
Bjugan.
A celebration of Rachel’s life will be held at Stordahl Lutheran Church in rural Zumbrota at 4 p.m. Wednesday, May 29.
Visitors are welcome to arrive at 3 p.m.

DOVER — An anhydrous
ammonia tank being towed
by a pickup went into a ditch
and rolled early Friday afternoon near Dover.
The Rochester Fire Department’s chemical-assessment
team was sent to the accident
and worked with local fire
departments to evaluate
any danger, Rochester Fire
Department spokesman Steve
Belau said. An Interstate 90
rest area is near the location.
No leaks or other problems
were found at the scene, and
neither were any dangerous conditions. Rochester
firefighters were leaving the
scene at 2 p.m.

Minneapolis to pay $3M
in police misconduct case

city of Minneapolis has
agreed to pay more than
$3 million to settle a lawsuit
filed by the family of a man
who died after struggling
with police at the Minneapolis YMCA.
Twenty-eight-year-old David Smith died in 2010, about
a week after officers used
a Taser gun on him and restrained him by putting him
on his stomach and putting
their knees on his back.
The Star Tribune reports
the city will pay the Smith
family $1.1 million. The rest
of the settlement will go
toward attorneys’ fees.
Minneapolis city attorney
Susan Segal says in a statement that the settlement is
a responsible way to end the
case in the face of mounting
legal costs.

1963 — 50 years ago
An early morning fire gutted the Blue Goose Tavern in Zumbrota’s
main business district, leaving only the stone walls of the structure
standing. All that remained inside the tavern was an L-shaped bar
and a few bar stools. Damage is expected to be about $20,000, and
the two adjacent buildings, the Gambles Store and Charles Olson Co.
hardware and furniture store, had some damage because of smoke.
Because of larger than expected enrollment, the Rochester John
Marshall High School driver’s education course will be adjusted
with half of the 247 students attending the 8 to 11 a.m. session and
the other half attending the 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. session. Last year
had 130 students registered. Driver training instructors are Wayne
Kneischield, Bruce Arntson and Frank Kvam.
1938 — 75 years ago
An outdoor roller skating rink built under a large tent will open
in Rochester this weekend. The rink will feature Hammond organ
music by Doris Westman, who plays the organ at a hotel in Sioux
City, Iowa. Free instruction will be given beginners, and the floor
will be supervised at all times. The rink is located on U.S. 14 at the
intersection west of the city.
Miss Margery Holliday, representing the Farmers State Bank, was
named “Miss West Concord.”
War, politics and economic problems are among the things young
people are thinking about today, according to Dean Anne Dudley
Blitz of the University of Minnesota. She spoke last night under the
auspices of the Parent-Teacher Association.
