Building Dreams tiger woods foundation year in review 2003 TIGER WOODS FOUNDATION 4281 Katella Avenue • Suite 111 • Los Alamitos, CA 90720 • 714.816.1806 • www.tigerwoodsfoundation.org blueprint for success In 2003, the Tiger Woods Foundation reached several milestones. We awarded more than 119 grants to various youth-driven programs across the United States; enrolled our one-millionth child into the Start Something program; and finalized our plans for the construction of a 35,000-square-foot youth education center in Orange County, California — the Tiger Woods Learning Center. Our fundraising events have continued to successfully support the Foundation’s mission of empowering America’s youth. While fans enjoyed Bon Jovi’s sold-out performance at April’s Tiger Jam VI benefit concert, funds from the event restored the music program at a Las Vegas middle school. In October, children from Pennsylvania, California, Puerto Rico and Florida enjoyed three days of junior golf during our 29th TWF Junior Golf Clinic. Finally, in December 2003, many fans watched Davis Love III become the first two-time winner of the Target World Challenge presented by Williams PGA TOUR event, benefiting the Learning Center project and Start Something program. Tiger Woods Foundation THE MISSION Throughout the year, the Foundation received support from many corporations, foundations and individuals. In addition, I also want acknowledge and thank those that have made donations and pledges to the Learning Center Capital Campaign.Through the generosity of many, 2003 has been an excellent year. On behalf of everyone at the Foundation, thank you for your support. Sincerely, We empower young people to reach their highest potential by initiating and supporting community-based programs that promote the health, education and welfare of all of America’s children. Tiger Woods, Founder 1 building the TWLC Located in Anaheim, California, the Tiger Woods Learning Center is a 35,000-square-foot, 13-acre education facility located in Southern California where children will discover their futures through programs in math, science, language arts and character development. Inside, the Center will house seven classrooms, a computer lab, multi-media center, cafe and student lounge. In April 2003,Tiger and his father Earl joined with local children to celebrate the groundbreaking of the Tiger Woods Learning Center. Anaheim Mayor Curt Pringle, Orange County Supervisor Tom Wilson and members of the TWLC’s Education Committee were also on hand to help Tiger mark the beginning of the TWLC’s $25 million fundraising campaign, which has generated more than $17 million to date. Construction begins in the summer 2004, and the Center opens in the spring of 2005. tiger woods learning center founder’s club The Tiger Woods Learning Center would like to thank the following corporations and individuals for their leadership gifts to the Tiger Woods Learning Center Fundraising Campaign. Programs in math, science and language arts focus on active participation in the learning process allowing students to explore new ideas, discover new talents and achieve success in ways they never knew existed. At the TWLC, each student will make the connection between education and success, using practical lessons to transform dreams into reality. change your world The TWLC will offer a Day Program, a four-week education curriculum for grades 4-6 that will reinforce lessons from the classroom and apply them to everyday life. Children in this program will have an opportunity to learn practical lessons, such as how math relates to becoming an architect or how science relates to becoming a doctor. The After-School Program will be for middle and high school students on traditional schedules, turning dangerous after-school hours into a safe educational environment. Studies will emphasize TWLC’s core educational values; however, After-School students will focus on how their personal interests can translate into college or careers. Sessions will last 8- to-12 weeks. The TWLC will also offer weekend programs and a Summer Ambassador’s Camp that will open the Center to students from across the country. These programs will also serve as a continuum for students who have attended TWLC’s Day and After-School Programs. www.twlc.org 4 Students at the Tiger Woods Learning Center will study math, science and language arts. 5 start something for millions by Earl D. Woods, Chairman In July 2003, the Foundation and Target Stores had the pleasure of announcing that Start Something celebrated the one-millionth program participant — Janette Saldana, age 12, from Lindsay, California. I am thrilled about the growth of Start Something. Reaching one million members in just three years is a wonderful achievement and a testament to the value of the program. I can’t wait to see all of these children reach their dreams, and Janette is a wonderful example of Start Something’s positive impact. Her dream is to be an architect, and the program has helped her work with a local architect to create a landscape design model for a housing complex in her hometown.Through Start Something, Janette has been able to define her goals and directly understand the impact that one person can make. As the Foundation continues to grow, I am proud that Start Something is continuing to grow as well, changing the way our children think, act and live. 6 start something START SOMETHING encourages kids ages 8 to 17 to identify a specific personal desire or goal and begin taking steps toward achieving their dreams. In the process, kids also identify personal values, interests and talents needed to achieve their dream goal. Best of all, they can qualify for scholarships to fund their special interests. Since the program’s debut in 2000,Target Stores has awarded over $650,000 to Start Something scholarship winners. In 2003, the Target World Challenge presented by Williams,Tiger Jam VI, Foundation Junior Golf Clinics and the Deutsche Bank Championship raised millions for these efforts. HOSTED BY TIGER WOODS, the Target World Challenge presented by Williams is a 72-hole, stroke play event co-sponsored by the PGA TOUR. Featuring the top 16 players in the world, the Target World Challenge always brings together the world’s best golfers in an intimate setting. Returning to defend his 2002 title, Padraig Harrington joined a field that also included Woods, Fred Couples, Mike Weir and Davis Love III.The tournament began with a Celebrity Pro-Am on Tuesday and Wednesday that included celebs such as Kevin James, Wayne Gretzky and Martin Sheen. Professional play began on Thursday as the competitors vied for their share of the $5 million purse. Sunday’s round proved to be the most exciting as rain-soaked fans watched Tiger shred the 9-stroke lead held by Davis Love III. In the end, however, Love III triumphed and claimed the $1.2 million First Place Prize. Woods finished second and donated his winnings to the Foundation. targetworldchallenge.com TARGET WORLD CHALLENGE — DECEMBER 8-14 Purse: $5,000,000 — Course: Sherwood Country Club — Par: 72 Davis Love III Tiger Woods Padraig Harrington Justin Leonard Mike Weir K.J. During tournament week, the Tiger Woods Foundation hosted a golf exhibition for more than 750 kids from youth organizations in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Earl Woods was joined by PGA TOUR professionals Darren Clarke, Rickey Barnes and trick shot artist Chuck “The HitMan” Hiter to entertain the attendees. Based on each organization’s commitment to improving the lives of children in New England,The Foundation awarded funds to the Massachusetts Golf Association’s ForeKids Golf Program, Boston’s CityDance program and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston and the Greater Providence Area. Proceeds also benefited the Tiger Woods Learning Center in Southern California. 12 Above: A junior golfer enjoys a lesson at the Deutsche Bank Championship. The team once again had a terrific showing, and Jane Rah, a player in the Girls 11– to 12-year-old division finished in first place. IN THE CITY CLINICS In an effort to further extend the reach of junior golf to the youth of the country, the Foundation began the “In the City” golf clinic program in 2003.The first three clinics were held in Indio, Calif., Wilkinsburg, Pa., and San Juan, Puerto Rico and were targeted to all youth, ages 7–17, and their families.
