Notes From the Pastor’s Desk
First Friday of Advent
Today we begin the season of Advent, which marks the start of a new liturgical year for the
Church. Today's Gospel is taken from the end of Mark's Gospel, the chapter that immediately precedes Mark's account of Jesus' Passion. Having been questioned repeatedly by the scribes and the
Pharisees, Jesus is now questioned by his disciples—Peter, James, John, and Andrew—who want details about his prediction of the destruction of the Temple. Jesus answers with many warnings about the difficulties that the disciples will face.
Today's passage comes at the conclusion of Jesus' warnings to his disciples. Jesus emphasizes the need for watchfulness. The Son of Man will come without warning; only the Father knows the exact hour. The disciples must not be caught
unprepared when this time comes.
Scholars believe that Mark's Gospel was written around the time of the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in
A.D. 70. Mark's audience consisted of Christians who were living in difficult social and political times, times of conflict.
They were likely beginning to face persecution as followers of Jesus. In this difficult time, it helped to recall that Jesus had
foretold of such difficulties. Early Christian communities took courage from Jesus' warning to remain alert and watchful,
and they found in his words a way to persevere through suffering.
Today's Gospel reminds us that Advent is about more than our preparation for the Church's celebration of Christ's birth
at Christmas. Advent is also about preparing ourselves for Christ's return in glory at the end of time. Like the disciples and
the faithful in Mark's community, we must also stay alert and watchful. Our faithfulness to God, through the good times as
well as the difficult times, shows us to be ready for the coming of the Son of Man.
Fr. Matteo
P. Matteo
Primeiro Domingo do Advento
romanos no ano 70 dC.
As primeiras comunidades cristãs

“Watch!” This word occurs three times in today’s
Gospel passage. Moreover, it is placed at significant
points: the beginning, the center, and the end. Though
this is technically a parable, it is quite short (four verses).
The threefold repetition of “watch” leaves no doubt as to
what the story is about.
We often think of Advent as a time of waiting, but it
truly is a season of watchfulness, a very active form of
waiting for the coming Day of the Lord. It is that day,
more than Christmas day, that the Christian community
faithfully expects, using all of our gifts and talents for
this purpose, as Paul reminds us in the Letter to the Corinthians. When we use these gifts in faithful watching
and expectation, we become like the servants of the parable, set to their tasks, not waiting around idly, but engaged in the master’s work until his return. May our Advent be a time when we return or rededicate our lives and
our communities to this work—the active and diligent
faithfulness that the Lord will expect to find.

Soon, the angels will be singing.
Soon will come the starry night,
When a Savior King lies sleeping,
Wrapped in Glory’s golden light.
Once more comes sweet absolution,
The prophecy of ancient deeps,
As Heaven’s choir proclaims His birth,
Forgiveness in a manger sleeps.

Over 35 years ago Sister Camille of The Children’s
Diagnostic Center in Pompano Beach approached St.
Vincent Church requesting Christmas gifts for patients
and their families. Ever since then, as Christmas
approaches, we get a list of names and families. Each
family has at least 1 child with HIV or AIDS. A large
share of these children are born with the disease. Some
have now reached their teenage years and are having a
difficult time coping with their illness. Most have only a
mother, grandmother, or aunt to care for them.
We hope to be able to give each member of these
families two $20.00 or more gift cards from Walmart
or Target. Please be an Angel and take an envelope
from the tree and return it by December 14 with
cash, a gift card or a check made out to St. Vincent
Church marked “Angel Tree” for $20.00 or more.
You cannot believe how much these gifts mean to
these families. Thank you for your help.

“Every human person-no matter how
vulnerable or helpless, no matter how
young or how old, no matter how healthy
handicapped or sick, no matter how useful
or productive for society- is being of inestimable worth created in the image and
likeness of God. This is the dignity of America… the
ultimate test of her greatness: to respect every human
person, especially the weakest and most defenseless
ones, those as yet unborn.” — Pope John Paul II, Apostolic
Journey to the United States and Canada
For all people: that we may act with kindness and
charity towards the elderly, migrants, the poor, and the
unborn; We pray to the Lord.

1º DOMINGO DO ADVENTO
Liturgicamente, o tempo do
Advento (do latim adventus
= chegada) corresponde às
quatro
semanas
que
antecedem o Natal. As
quatro velas representam
essas quatro semanas e
serão acesas, uma a uma,
desde o primeiro domingo do Advento até o
quarto domingo, sucessivamente. As cores das
velas devem corresponder à cor do tempo
Senhor.
Neste sentido, relembramos que as vestes
exceção do terceiro domingo, onde o rosa
substitui o roxo, revelando o Domingo da Alegria
aprofundar a proximidade do Natal, onde Cristo,
Salvador e Luz do mundo brilhará para a
humanidade. Lembra ainda o perdão concedido a
neste Advento, enxugue todas as lágrimas,
