Notes From the Pastor’s Desk
Third Sunday of Advent
John's Gospel for today begins with a theological reflection that has come to be called
the “prologue.” This prologue places the story of Jesus in its cosmological framework. It
speaks of Jesus' existence with God since the beginning of time. In John's Gospel, Jesus is
presented as the fulfillment of the Old Testament and the culmination of the Word, the light that is coming into
the world's darkness.
Following this prologue, John reports on the ministry of John the Baptist. We learn about the attention that
John the Baptist received from the Jewish authorities. Messengers from the Jewish priests, the Levites and the
Pharisees question John about his identity and the meaning of the baptisms that he is performing. John's Gospel
uses these questions to establish the relationship between Jesus and John the Baptist. John the Baptist is not the
Messiah, nor is he Elijah or the Prophet. In John's denials, we hear echoes of the kind of messianic expectations
that were common in first-century Palestine.
The only affirmative response that John the Baptist gives is when he quotes the prophet Isaiah. Upon
answering the next question, John announces that the savior they seek is already among them, but as yet unrecognized. John's response highlights for us an important Advent theme: Jesus has already come into the world as
our savior. During Advent, we pray that we will be able to recognize Jesus' presence in our midst. Advent also
reminds us that Jesus will come again to fulfill the promise of salvation. We pray that we will continue to be
watchful as we anticipate that great day.
Fr. Matteo
P. Matteo
3o Domingo do Advento

Each of today’s four scriptural roles—disciple,
prophet, apostle, herald—forms a facet of our life in
Christ as we live it day by day. Isaiah tells us that a
prophet is anointed, as we were anointed at our baptism in water and the Spirit, to bring glad tidings and
to promote God’s reign of healing, justice, and peace.
An apostle, like Paul, is one who is “sent.” Each of
us, in his or her own way, is sent by Christ to be a
voice of rejoicing, to encourage prophetic voices in
the world, and to make sure that the work of the Spirit thrives. John the Baptist shows us the job of the
herald, making the Lord’s way straight, announcing
the coming of the Light of the world.
Today we also hear from Mary, model disciple.
Her song, the Magnificat, shows us the world we
must believe in and work for: one in which God is
praised, where God’s favor is bestowed on the
humble, where the hungry are filled and the rich are
sent away empty, a world that continues to know
and rejoice in the mercy of God that lasts for all
ages.

Mesoamerica, the New World, 1521: The capital city
of the Aztec empire falls under the Spanish forces. Less
than 20 years later, 9 million of the inhabitants of the
land, who professed for centuries a polytheistic and
human sacrificing religion, are converted to Christianity.
What happened in those times that produced such an
incredible and historically unprecedented conversion?
In 1531 a "Lady from Heaven" appeared to a humble
Native American, Juan Diego, at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of what is now Mexico City. She identified herself
as the ever virgin Holy Mary, Mother of the True God
for whom we live, of the Creator of all things, Lord of
heaven and the earth.
She made a request for a church to be built on the
site, and submitted her wish to the local Bishop. When
the Bishop hesitated, and requested her for a sign, the
Mother of God obeyed without delay or question to the
Church's local Bishop, and sent her native messenger to
the top of the hill in mid-December to gather an assortment of roses for the Bishop.
After complying to the Bishop's request for a sign,
she also left for us an image of herself imprinted miraculously on the native's tilma, a poor quality cactus-cloth,
which should have deteriorated in 20 years but shows no
sign of decay 480 years later and still defies all scientific
explanations of its origin. It apparently even reflects in
Her eyes what was in front of her in 1531.
Her message of love and compassion, and her universal promise of help and protection to all mankind, as
well as the story of the apparitions, are described in the
"Nican Mopohua", a 16th century document written in the
native Nahuatl language.
There is reason to believe that at Tepeyac Mary
came in her glorified body, and her actual physical hands
rearranged the roses in Juan Diego’s tilma, which makes
this apparition very special. An incredible list of miracles, cures and interventions are attributed to her.
Yearly, between 18 - 20 million pilgrims visit the
Basilica, making it Christianity's most visited sanctuary.
Altogether 25 popes have officially honored Our Lady of
Guadalupe. His Holiness John Paul II visited her Sanctuary four times: on his first apostolic trip outside Rome as
Pope in 1979, and again in 1990, 1999 and 2002.
The Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated on
December 12. In 1999, Pope John Paul II, in his homily
from the Solemn Mass at the Basilica of Our Lady
of Guadalupe, during his third visit to the sanctuary,
declared the date of December the 12th as a Liturgical
Holy Day for the whole continent.
During the same visit Pope John Paul II entrusted the
cause of life to her loving protection, and placed under her
motherly care the innocent lives of children, especially
those who are in danger of not being born.

"TRANSBORDO DE ALEGRIA..."
A 1ª leitura deste domingo nos desafia a
transformar a realidade social
e mostra a esperança e a
alegria que brotam desse
compromisso. Ela nos diz que
o Espírito do Senhor move
O Evangelho apresenta o compromisso e a alegria
simples encontro. Ele morará em nosso meio se
nos convertermos para posturas de vida que
também nos poderão ser ensinadas por Jesus,
aquele que acolhemos como luz do mundo.
Portanto, o alegre anúncio vem acompanhado de
um grande desafio: levar adiante o projeto vivido
e anunciado por Jesus Cristo, nosso irmão e
Senhor.

Proveemos:
Jesús proclama que Juan el
Bautista es más que un profeta y
lo compara con Elías, el profeta
más importante de los judíos.
Pero, ¿qué es un profeta? El judaísmo, cristianismo e islamismo
reconocen a ciertas personas como profetas. La palabra hebrea
nabi significa portavoz, o profeta.
