2015 Land Survey Review Begins!
Distribution Information
Kick-Off Session Welcomes 18 Students
This newsletter is an email-only distribution.!
Dec. 4th, 2014. I attended the first session of the Land Survey Review Course (LSR)
this month, where 18 exam candidates and several instructors and program staff were
present. !
Notices, original articles, and other relevant information are
encouraged for publication in the newsletter. There are many
interesting and pertinent articles in other publications.
Mention of articles is encouraged, but please provide your
remarks summary in a Word doc format and a link to the
article, rather than copying the whole article. PDF or JPEG
format sized to approx. 300 KB or less is best for graphics.
Large reference files may have to be sent separately.
Newsletter is distributed by the first Wednesday of the
month. Send items to Paul Goebel at
[email protected] by the last Saturday of the
month.!
After many years of refinement, the LSR has developed into a course that is
recognized from all over the State as being a leading exam review course. Many
students travel from other counties such as San Bernardino and Riverside to attend.
The lessons are very organized and taught by returning instructors who are able to
deliver the teaching material using proven lesson plans.!
Bob Adams serves as LSR Coordinator and began the session with an introduction
that gave the students a general idea of what to expect while in class and other helpful
insights about the surveying exam. Bob didn’t “sugar coat” any of the facts and made
it clear that students were expected to have a surveying background before arriving at
the LSR. The upcoming sessions are intended only as an aid to existing knowledge.!
Jack Gecher and Bob Hagler, and others were present to help run the session, check in
students, and provide information about the facility, which is generously provided by
CalTrans. The class is so well run that it has the feel of a college course or professional
training series. A newcomer may not realize that the LSR is run by volunteers.!
Once the introduction formalities were complete, Mike Hart began the first in a series
of four sessions about the public lands survey system
(PLSS). There are many Surveyors who enjoy talking about
the PLSS, but I cannot imagine anyone more knowledgeable
and enthusiastic than Mike Hart. Mike loves this stuff and
it shows. “Mike’s speedometer is calibrated in chains per hour”
Jack Gecher joked as the session started. The PLSS
information doesn’t just trickle forth in some boring speech:
it comes out in torrents as Mike walks about the
classroom, gesturing and lecturing. He starts class a few
James (Mike) Hart, PLS,
minutes early for a “bonus round” and never stops until
CFedS
the class ends at 9:00 p.m. Have any more questions? He
will keep talking. And If that isn’t enough, Bob Adams
co-instructs the PLSS sessions, adding even more knowledge. Both of the instructors
are certified CFedS Surveyors.!
