PLEASE NOTE: The rectory office will be closed Thursday, January 1, 2015 for
the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God.
We find ourselves right in the midst of the beautiful and
joyous Christmas season, actually in the octave of the feast. My
hope and prayer is that everyone had a wonderful Christmas Eve
and Day and is having a very blessed season. I do want to take
this opportunity to also thank all of you for the many cards, gifts,
and wishes of a joyous season that you have extended to us
priests. As with some of the recent bulletins, this one had to be
written well over a week in advance. Thus I am writing it the
week before the week of Christmas. That obviously puts me at a
disadvantage. Even with that however we have received all
kinds of Christmas greetings and gifts, including fruit baskets,
baked goods, candy, and other types of food in addition to other
gifts. Again, we are very grateful for all of your kindness and
generosity. I will have more to say about this next week as well
when it will actually be after Christmas Day as I write that column.
Personally, I did receive a few Christmas gifts that had
something to do with my NFL team which of course would be the
Green Bay Packers. I am very thankful for those gifts. What was
not much of a gift was the last game the Packers played before
writing this particular column. That game was in Buffalo where
the Packers were defeated rather handily by the Bills, 21 to 13.
Despite the great season our quarterback, Aaron Rodgers, had
been having, you wouldn’t have known it on December 14th.
From start to finish the team was out of sync. It was one of
Aaron’s worst games ever. To say it was disappointing is an
understatement. I suppose I can better relate to Washington fans
with this game. The loss likely knocks the Packers out of the first
place in the conference, relegating them to third, and causes
them to lose home field advantage throughout the playoffs. No
doubt this is part of life, as Redskins fans know all too well this
year.
Spiritually, you knew this would come, there is a
message in all the above. Throughout our lives there are indeed
setbacks. I talked about this just two weeks ago. I wasn’t
expecting that to happen to my Packers so quickly. But
something similar can happen in our lives before God. We are
sinners; we fail God daily in one way or another, and sometimes
in some fairly significant ways. Thankfully, we can amend our
ways, be sorry, confess our sins, and be absolved of them. This
is all possible because of God’s grace and specifically because of
what Christ did and does for us. What He did for us we celebrate
in part during this season. He humbled Himself and took on
human flesh. He was born among us, not in a palace or
mansion, but in a simple stable, not in a big city like Jerusalem,
but in a small, out of the way place called Bethlehem. He lived
thirty years rather obscured from the public eye, but then lived
another three years very much in the public eye, often suffering
ridicule and persecution for what He said and what He did. That
led to His death on a cross and His resurrection which redeemed
us and provides us His forgiving and reconciling graces. That is
why we are so grateful. That is why we should daily show that
gratitude by truly trying to grow in holiness and virtue.
As we celebrate this Holy Family Sunday, we want to
pray for one another, but also particularly for families. Family life
is challenged in so many ways today, sometimes from within,
other times from without. Regardless many families, just as
many individuals, are suffering and are in need of our prayers
and sometimes even actions. Briefly, before closing I want to
mention one way of helping the children of certain families in
need. There is a mentoring program in the city that is trying to
make a difference in children’s lives. It is called soho; I’ll have
more to say about it next week.
In Christ,
Fr. Kleinmann

SECOND COLLECTION FOR THE LITTLE SISTERS OF THE POOR
During the weekend of January 3-4, 2015, a second collection will be taken
to help the Little Sisters of the Poor, who have provided a home and
compassionate care for Virginia’s elderly since 1874. The Sisters will be
present at all the Masses to explain their mission and to ask for your
support. Because their Residents are of limited financial means, the little
Sisters depend upon the charity of friends and benefactors to operate their
Home. Your generosity will enable the Sisters to continue welcoming the
needy elderly and providing them with the love and dignity they deserve.

ST. MARY'S CHURCH DECORATIONS: Since 1795, the decoration of St.
Mary Catholic Church and Sanctuary has been an important expression of
the reverent observance of Advent and the joyful celebration of Christmas.
With a rich heritage more than two centuries old, St. Mary's has always
maintained a distinctly liturgical and historic appearance. Decorations will
be maintained through the Twelve Days of Christmas. After that time,
selected decorations including the Crèche and Christmas decorations will
remain in place until Monday, February 2, 2015 (the Feast of the
Presentation, also known as "Candlemas") following the Vatican
tradition. Church decorations, flowers and vintage Crèche figures, designed
to give glory to “our newborn King,” also remind us of the great gift of the
Catholic Faith which our ancestors have handed down to us. To protect and
preserve our Christmas decorations for future generations, we ask everyone
to please refrain from touching the crèche figures, Christmas flowers and
ornaments – instead, let them prayerfully touch you. May you experience
the many blessings of the Christmas Season!

PRAYER TO THE HOLY FAMILY OF NAZARETH
Mother Mary, bless the mother of our family. Help her to be pure and kind,
gentle and self-sacrificing. For the more she resembles you, the better will
our family be. Saint Joseph, bless the head of our family. Obtain for him the
strength, the wisdom, and the prudence he needs to support and direct
those under his care. Lord Jesus, bless the children of our family. Help them
to be obedient and devoted to their parents. Holy Family of Nazareth, make
our family and home more and more like yours, until we are all one family,
happy and at peace in our true home with you in Heaven. Amen.

Almighty and Eternal God, those who take refuge in You will be glad and
forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their
duties. Protect them with the shield of Your strength and keep them safe
from all evil and harm. May the power of Your love enable them to return
home in safety, that with all who love them, they may ever praise You for
Your loving care. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

PRAYER TO JESUS, MARY, AND JOSEPH
O most loving Jesus, Who by Thy sublime and beautiful virtues of humility,
obedience, poverty, modesty, charity, patience and gentleness, and by the
example of Thy domestic life, didst bless with peace and happiness the
family Thou didst choose on earth, in Thy clemency look down upon this
household, humbly prostrate before Thee and imploring Thy mercy.
Remember that this family belongs to Thee; for to Thee we have in a
special way dedicated and devoted ourselves. Look upon us in Thy loving
kindness; preserve us from danger; give us help in time of need, and grant
us the grace to persevere to the end in the imitation of Thy Holy Family; that
having revered Thee and loved Thee faithfully on earth, we may bless and
praise Thee eternally in heaven. Amen.
O Mary, most sweet Mother, to thy intercession we have recourse, knowing
that thy Divine Son will hear thy prayers. And do thou, O glorious Patriarch,
St. Joseph, assist us by thy powerful mediation, and offer, by the hands of
Mary, our prayers to Jesus. Amen.
