As a result of the ‘States of Mind’ research, a 1-day Training program and the Safe
from the Start Resource Kit using ‘acvity based play’ for children aged 0-6 was
developed. The Safe from the Start acon research showed that one way to acvely
support children through their experiences of violence and trauma is through play
therapy. Play enables symbolic communicaon with the child as it is the way in
which a child can express their feelings and connect with and seek to understand
their world.
Over 1000 family violence, AOD and child protecon workers, counsellors, foster
carers, family and children’s services workers have a=ended training naonally in
Australia, New Zealand and the UK. Safe from the Start won the top Na'onal Crime
& Violence Preven'on Award in 2011 and NAPCAN Award in 2013.
The Safe from the Start training covers:
• The research findings on the impact on children who have witnessed or
