THAT’S the call out from Sunshine Coast
Council with the warmer temperature, wet
weather and high tides providing optimum
breeding conditions for mosquitos.

Councillor Jenny McKay said council had
an ongoing proactive control program to
monitor and combat mosquitoes but
residents could also play an important
role in reducing the high numbers of little
biters.
“Mosquito breeding sites in saltmarsh
areas and intertidal zones on the Sunshine
Coast Council area total about 1000ha and
ultimately impact the majority of residents
along our coastal towns and westward to the
Blackall Range.
“During higher tidal inundations, typically
around 12-15 per year, mosquito hatches are
triggered and council’s proactive treatment
program target as many of these saltmarsh
mosquito breeding sites as possible.
“We particularly target the Aedes vigilax
mosquito which is a vector for chronic
diseases such as Ross River Fever.
“Controlling mosquito populations is a
complex task as the average mosquito can
travel 30 km in distance dependant on the
tides and wind direction.
“This week council has undertaken the
fourth aerial mosquito larvae treatment of
the season targeting the southern areas of the
region. Post treatment surveying is now
being completed to assess efficacy.
“Further aerial treatments are planned next
week in the northern areas.”
Cr McKay said numerous breeding sites
have also been detected in and around
residential areas throughout the region.
“Everyone can help to reduce mosquito
impacts,” she said.
“From cleaning up your yard to emptying
water out of old pots, containers and tyres,
there’s a number of small things you can do
to help reduce the number of breeding sites
around your home.”
Mosquito populations usually rise to a
peak in late summer but large populations
can also occur at any time between
September and April if favourable
conditions for mosquito breeding occur.
Council obtains State Government permits
for mosquito treatments and abides by the
conditions of the chemicals used.

will receive $98,800 to undertake
coastal ecosystem rehabilitation and

$100,000 to protect wildlife river
habitats.
Ms Simpson said that the money
would be put to good use by local
volunteers with a passion for making
our wonderful area even better.
“These are great organisations
who work hard to make practical
difference to our beautiful natural
environment,” she said.

volunteers who work together to keep

21 World Junior Surfing Titles in

preparation for his first event for

“I had a few weeks off in
November just to relax and unwind.
As of December 1, I have been back
in training preparing both
physically and mentally for 2015,”
Kelly said.
“I am expecting a big year with
lots of travel and good results.

Holiday dance camps at Peregian Springs
FOR Mei Mei Tan, a 12-year-old
dancer from The Dance Centre
Peregian Springs, summer means a
chance to spend more time doing
what she loves - dancing.
These holidays, she will take on
the role of assistant at holiday camps
being offered from January 16 by
owners and teachers at The Dance
Centre Peregian Springs, Deborah
Preece-Brocksom and Richard Leader.
Having started dancing at the age
of 6, Mei Mei now spends many
hours each week during term
studying everything from classical
ballet to contemporary dance, and
says the holiday camps have
improved her dancing.
“Miss Deborah and Mr Richard
make dancing fun,” Mei Mei said. “I
want to help the younger kids have fun
dancing at the Holiday Camps too.”
The holiday camps being offered
begin with the Summer Dance
Workshop which will run from
January 16 to 18. Designed for
dancers aged 7 to 18 years, this camp
will include guest faculty.
Then, from January 19 to 21, the
Holiday Dance Camp for Tiny Toes
and Little Dancers aged 3 to 11 years
will be conducted.
Finally, on January 22, will be the
Dance, Drama and Art Day for
children aged 3 to 11 years.
As an incentive, The Dance Centre
will be offering one free place in the
dance camp for a child who can
describe, in 100 words or less, why
they want to attend camp. Registered
campers are entered into a drawing
for a free term class.
As for Mei Mei, her dream is to
become a professional ballerina and
follow in the footsteps of Dayna
Booth, also from The Dance Centre,
who is already on her way to
achieving her dream.

WHAT is the best option for
minimising organic waste sent to
landfill?
That’s the question Noosa’s
community jury will consider when it
meets in February for the first time.
As Councillors signed off on the
jury topic last night, new Democracy
Foundation confirmed the jury’s 24
members had been selected.
Mayor Noel Playford said there
are a number of different options for
dealing with organic waste and each
comes at a different price.
“That is why we wanted to
involve the community in the
decision-making process,” he said.
Organic waste is a major issue for
the shire as it represents up to 60 per
cent of typical household waste and
40 per cent of landfill.
Organic waste includes both
garden waste and food waste, which
consists of fruit, vegetable and meat
waste.
Organic waste is a major problem
because it takes up considerable
landfill space and produces a
significant amount of greenhouse
gas. Organic waste in the landfill
produces 70 per cent of Council’s
greenhouse gas emissions.
“The State Government’s Draft
Waste and Recycling Strategy for
Queensland 2014 - 2024 sets a target
for local government to increase its
diversion of domestic waste from
landfill from the current 33 per cent
to 45 per cent. Diverting and
recycling organic waste is an
effective means of achieving this
target,” Wayne Schafer, Waste
and Environmental Health
Manager said.
“It makes sense to isolate organic waste
so that it can be recycled effectively.”
Reducing organic waste to landfill
will minimise Council’s exposure to
any costly future government taxes
or levies relating to emissions and
the amount of waste sent to landfill.
The 24 Noosa residents that make
up the jury will commence
deliberations in a full-day sitting on
Saturday, February 7. Thereafter
they will meet one evening per
month.

Only working smoke alarms save lives
SMOKE alarms are mandatory in
Queensland residential homes - but
new data reveals more work needs to
be done to get the message through
to homeowners.
Research on the ground by
Australia’s leading smoke-alarm
specialist reveals more than one in
three Queensland households have at
least one non-working smoke
alarm, and more than one in four
households have no working
smoke alarm at all. Worse still,
the number of properties with
defective or absent alarms has
been increasing.
Since 2010, Smoke Alarms
Australia, Australia’s leading and
longest-running residential smoke
alarms specialist, has carried out a
first inspection of more than 140,000
residential properties in NSW,
Victoria, Queensland, ACT and
Western Australia - and a total of
259,000 smoke alarms.
In Queensland, the prevalence of
non-compliance has fluctuated year
on year, with at least one nonworking smoke alarm in 36.6% of
properties in 2010, rising to 37.2%
in 2014.
In 2010, 23.1% of Queensland
properties inspected for the first time
had no working alarms at all, up to
25.5% in 2014.

worrying, and suggest that state
government messages such as ‘Only
working smoke alarms save lives’
still have a long way to go.
“Homeowners are likely unaware
of the smoke-alarm legislation in
their state, or that alarms expire after
10 years. The State Government can
issue property owners a $500 onthe-spot fine for non-compliance.
“In light of this data and the
11,000 household fires that occurred
in Australian homes last year, it’s
clear that householders are not
aware that smoke alarms need to be
checked at least yearly to ensure
they are working.
“Householders are also likely
unaware that, under some policies,
their home and contents cover may
be invalid without a working smoke
alarm,” Mr Thompson added.
“Now is the time for homeowners
to have their smoke alarms checked
and replaced by a reputable smokealarms specialist that carries all of
the liability for product and
workmanship,” he said.
“For as little as $99, home owners
can have all their smoke alarms
checked and replaced.”
WORTH CHECKING: Although 11,000 household fires occurred in
Australian homes last year, the number of properties with defective or
absent smoke alarms has been increasing.
Smoke Alarms Australia’s 5 tips for
choosing and installing smoke
alarms:
1. Choose photoelectric smoke
alarms. Recommended by all
Australian fire authoriti es,
photoelectric smoke alarms use
light sensor technology to ‘see’
smoke before flames appear,
enabling them to detect
smouldering fires faster than
ionisation smoke alarms, which
can only ‘smell’ smoke when a fire
has already started.
2. Know how to identify ionisation
alarms. Ionisation smoke alarms
contain a small amount of the
radioactive material Americium241. The base of an ionisation
alarm will have a radiation symbol
and description of Americium-241.
3. Ensure smoke alarms meet the
Australian Standard. Smoke alarms
in all Australian residential
properties need to meet the
Australian Standard AS
3786. While certification should be
clear on the packaging, it is best to
have a smoke-alarm specialist
check your alarms comply.
4. Use a smoke alarms specialist to
ensure compliance and to carry the
liability. A reputable provider will
inspect your property, provide and
install the number of smoke alarms
as required by law and ensure
they’re positioned correctly within
the property. The annual cost per
property is as little as $99 when
using a specialist such as Smoke
Alarms Australia - with the added
benefit that they will carry full
product and workmanship liability
insurance.
5. Ensure you have the required
amount of alarms. Smoke alarms
are not only mandatory in
Australian residential homes, but
are required in each level of the
home. All State fire authorities
also recommend a smoke alarm
be located between each
bedroom area and the rest of the
house, and inside any bedroom
where a person sleeps with the
door closed.

Local jobs are a good thing, and
construction and tourism have long
been a big part of our state
economy.
But did you know there’s already a
special Master Plan in place for the
Yaroomba site that allows multiple
buildings 8.5m to 16m tall - higher
than anywhere else currently
approved in the Coolum area? And,
let’s face it, there’s no shortage of
construction in the Sunshine Coast
pipeline
Kawana
and
Maroochydore
CBD-to-be
for
starters.
The Coast’s tourism numbers are
currently on the increase, not
because we’ve built more high-rise
accommodation, but largely thanks
to the decline in the Oz dollar, and
drier weather (something no
government
or
multinational
company can bend to their will).
All we’re asking for is moderate
development with a good steady
supply of local jobs, rather than
another cycle of boom and bust that
forces massive upheaval on small
communities. If our politicians
would listen, we wouldn’t need the
sign language.

Failure of justice
U n r e p e n t a n t

unreformed convicted criminals,
bailed by a naïve judiciary, expose
the general public to offenders
empowered by blind justice. The
rights of criminals seem to be
superior to the rights of their
unsuspecting victims.
Despite prosecutors and a very
conscientious police force opposing
bail for many with a history of
criminal convictions, there have
been tragedy upon tragedy for their
innocent victims, after their release
back into our communities.
Defending such domestic terrorists
is unconscionable. Even more
alarming is a system of appeal
which allows repeat offenders the
opportunity to reoffend. Victims of
crime such as Luke Batty, Jill
Meahers and Daniel Morcombe,
along with the many women who
feared for their lives from violent
partners, despite protection orders,
only to die at the hands of their
tormentors, are crying out for
justice.
Mental illness, drug and alcohol
abuse and warped ideologies are the
enemies of peace-loving
Australians, who want nothing but
to be secure and protected by the
law. But it is the same law
which allows perpetrators their right
to the presumption of innocence
until proven guilty and beyond. But
this is often the very same system
which lets the guilty loose again
upon the community, giving them a
licence to repeat their actions. They
walk free in the presence of their
victims, laughing at the anomalies
which protect them but not their
victims, with the backing of a legal
system which needs an overhaul.
We now question the ability of the
laws of this land and the court
system to protect us from evil. We
have witnessed the failure of the
courts too many times. Those who
fail to learn from history are
doomed to repeat it. This event was
history in the making. Let it not
define us.

discussion.
Whilst I give you credit for some
points, I seem to recall L.J. Plant
accusing Bill Shorten of having the
personality of a carrot, a sentiment I
vehemently disagree with, as you
would expect.
It must be remembered, though, that
despite John Howard’s abuse of his
Senate Majority in his final term
and his unpopular policies, it was
not until the gentlemanly Kim
Beazley was replaced with the more
aggressive Kevin Rudd, that
Howard’s chances of winning a fifth
term rapidly dissipated.
Whilst debate should be civilised
and I will seek to tone down some
of my future letters, it must be
remembered that the old strategy of
waiting for your opponent to
implode does not always guarantee
improved support for one’s cause
and objectives.

Community invited to
have their say on waste
CONSTRUCTION of a new
resource recovery centre, expansion
of services and delivery of
innovative, financially viable
infrastructure are just a few of the
major actions outlined in council’s
draft Sunshine Coast Waste Strategy
2015 – 2025.
Council have unanimously
decided to take the draft strategy to
the community for review and
comment from 12 January – 14
February 2015.
The draft waste strategy, including
any amendments coming from the
consultation process, will be
presented to Council for adoption in
April 2015.
Environment Portfolio Councillor
and chair of the Waste Working
Group Jenny McKay said the draft
Waste Strategy had been developed
in line with council’s vision to be
Australia’s most sustainable region.
“This strategy shapes future waste
infrastructure needs for the Sunshine
Coast, supports the development of
resource recovery markets, ensure
waste management remains cost
effective and customer focused and
protects public health and the natural
environment,” Cr McKay said.
“I encourage the community to
review the draft strategy and have
their say during the consultation
period”.

The field for the Coolum Cup
Yes, it’s on again the infamous “Coolum
Cup”. Once again an outstanding field of local,
interstate and for the first time international
talent has been assembled for this year’s event.
Newcomer, the impeccable Japanese import
“Sekisui” is the favourite at 2-1. The outsider
of the field is the bottom weight, popular local
“Slippery Shuffling Shaun” at 80-1.
The Toads will be auctioned by Silent
Auction, with the first bidder to pass the
reserved price declared the owner. Toads that
do not reach the reserve will then go to open
auction at 3.00pm with the Cup scheduled to
start at 3.15pm.
All local clubs and
community groups are encouraged to get
behind their entrant, and spend up as the
profits from this year’s race will be dispersed
to Coolum Lions charities.
All toads have been named in good fun and
it is certainly not the intention of the
organizers to offend any person. The form
guide has also been written in good fun, once
again with no intention to offend.
Once the toads have been auctioned the pool
will be divided up as follows: Lions Charities
50%, First 25%, second 15%, third 10%.
We hope that everyone enjoys this event
as much as we have done in assembling the
field.

use the dirtiest tactics ever seen as he attempts
to decimate this field.

opposed everything that has ever happened in
Coolum for years, in spite of this our town
continues to prosper. Will need to adopt a

months while it was falling down around him.
This will be his last start in the cup as he will

Mr Harry Bentley DFC passed away on Christmas
Eve, aged 91. Harry served in Bomber Command
during World War II. The funeral will be held at St
Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 28-32 Elizabeth
Street, Coolum Beach on Saturday, January 10,
starting at 12.30pm.
Coolum-Peregian RSL Sub-Branch will reopen on
Friday, January 9 at 4pm, with meals from
5.30pm to 8pm.
The Sub-Branch needs more volunteers. Come

mysteries of infrared photography. This will be
followed by the normal judges’ critique on the set
subject, ‘Texture’.

To commence our Quota year, members along

group of women to come and meet us at this

‘Choir of Hard Knocks’
Have you heard of the wonderful story of
Jonathon Welch’s street choir of Melbourne, the
Choir of Hard Knocks? Well, he has recently
begun such a choir in Brisbane, and now it is
Coolum’s turn.
Two very talented local musical directors will
coordinate the choir under the umbrella of
Coolum HeARTs. It will be called “I’m Still
Standing” and begin on January 19 at the Lions
Hall, 14 Russell Street, Coolum, on Mondays from
1pm to 3pm on a weekly basis.
Coolum HeARTs is an organisation aimed at
providing free access to the arts, for example
singing, writing and art, to people who live with
significant challenges in their lives - mental and
physical disabilities, social isolation, effects of
domestic violence and abuse, chronic loneliness
and long-term unemployment.
If you feel you would benefit from this, would love
to sing, feel you can’t, but would like to join a fun
group and learn great songs from all over the
world, please give Barb a call to talk about it.
There is no pressure to perform - just a
willingness to enjoy and sing from your heart in a
safe, supportive and friendly environment. We
have two very talented and approachable musical
directors to learn from.
