NO BACKING DOWN: Development Watch refuses to surrender in the face of Sekisui’s claims of community support.
COMMUNITY group Development Watch
has come out swinging, challenging Sekisui’s
claims of community support for their highrise development proposals at Yaroomba.
President of Development Watch, Lynnette
Saxton, has called into question both the
methodology and findings of Sekisui’s recent
phone poll, which claim “majority support” for
the project.
“If Sekisui really claim majority support for
a high-rise, high-density development at
Yaroomba, they need to come clean on their
survey findings,” Ms Saxton said.
“Nothing in Sekisui’s survey results indicate
community support for high-rise development
at Yaroomba.
“Nothing in Sekisui’s survey results appear
to support high-density development on the
Yaroomba foreshore.
“It is one thing to ask telephone respondents
about their awareness and sentiment towards a
proposal for a development that delivers a
hotel, creates jobs, and encourages tourism,”
she said.
“And it is quite another thing to avoid asking
respondents whether they support high-rise, highdensity development on this coastal strip.
“None of the questions referred to
development at Yaroomba.”
Ms Saxon described the survey’s
methodology as being highly questionable and
misleading.
“It has all the hallmarks of push polling, and
is so biased, it would even make Sir

“This is a classic example of an organisation
using a highly selective series of questions to
obtain a desired result.
“It does not accurately capture community
views in an unbiased manner.”
Ms Saxon suggested that, should Sekisui
stand by its survey findings, the company
should reveal to the public the specific
questions asked in the phone survey, to allow
the community to judge for itself the veracity
of the polling.
“Otherwise the survey results will be judged
for what they really are: a biased and highly
selective attempt at fudging real community
perceptions about the proposal,” she said.

Yaroomba’s new
pedestrian refuge
WORK has started this
week for a new pedestrian
refuge on David Low
Way at Yaroomba to help
pedestrians cross the busy
coastal road and improve
safety and convenience
for pedestrians.
The
$420,000
pedestrian refuge will be
installed on David Low
Way between Yerranya
Row and Goongilla Street
at Yaroomba.
It will be a welcome
boost to safety for locals,
with 9,000 vehicles using
the busy section of road
every day.
The site was chosen
because it provided good
site distance and there
was strong desire for
pedestrians to cross at the
location.
Two raised concrete
medians with handrails
will be installed to enable
pedestrians to cross the

road in two stages,
concentrating on traffic
from one direction at a
time.
New signage will be
installed on approach to
the refuge to warn
motorists of pedestrians
crossing the road, and a
new concrete footpath
will be provided to
connect the refuge to a
nearby bus stop.
Work would be finished
in about one month,
weather permitting, and
generally be carried out
between 6am and 5pm,
Monday to Friday.
The department thanks
nearby residents and
motorists for their
patience during works to
deliver this important
project to improve safety
for pedestrians.

Shaving for a cure
Linda leads the way at Coolum State School
STUDENTS and teachers at Coolum
Beach State School dug deep last
Friday, March 20, for the World’s
Greatest Shave.
And perhaps it was the Deputy
Principal herself, Linda Morse, who
made all the difference.
Students and teachers watched as
Linda traded her long blonde locks
for a short crop in the name of
cancer sufferers everywhere,
especially the very young.
“Working at a school, you get to
share the joys of childhood and
sometimes the adversity,” Linda
said.
“There is no greater adversity than
a child being in peril.
“No parent, brother, sister or
friend should have to endure the
difficult journey of cancer.
“It is only through research that a
cure will be found. This particular
research foundation (the Leukaemia
Foundation) has a very public
persona that allows us to get behind
it and donate.”
Linda commented that, because
the foundation becomes self-funded,
it thereby allows other government
money to flow into other research
projects.
And it is only through the research
of the disease that a cure will be
found - a cure that will benefit every
single one of us.
Linda’s locks are now on their
way to the UK to be made into a wig
for a little girl who has lost her hair
due to chemotherapy.
Through The Little Princesses
Organisation, a wig-maker will
receive donations of hair to be
created into special wigs.
“Working with children, I know
how important it is to blend in, and
the idea that my hair can be used in
this way is fabulous,” Linda said.
“Thanks to all the school families
and our fabulous staff who so
generously donated.
“The school office counted
donations in excess of $1,400 made
on the day of the shave.
“Add that to the online donations
of $2,761 and we are truly on our
way to making a difference.”

Let’s reiterate
Sekisui’s last-ditch marketing campaign has
begun, which is not surprising with just five
weeks to go until Council’s Special Meeting
at Caloundra on April 27, with the planning
Scheme amendment on the agenda.
The Sunshine Coast last week was flooded
with Sekisui’s promotional paraphernalia by
way

drops,
full-page
advertisements, media releases, and a survey.
Don’t be fooled by their spin. Sekisui would
be engaging highly qualified marketing
advisors who are experts in writing
promotional material which glorifies the truth,
rubbishes the opposition and puts the fear
factor into the economy.
Here are some facts:
Development Watch and most of the
community we have spoken to, are not against
a development at Yaroomba but endorse the
current approval which allows for a very
generous 350 dwellings, 175 of which can be
apartments up to 8.5m high. We endorse this
approval, not only because it is acceptable
from an environmental and visual point of
view, but because we want our local
tradespersons employed.
If our local tradespersons have any chance of
being hired in the construction phase, the
buildings must be low-rise because they are
not experienced in high-rise construction. A
good example of this is the new Sunshine
Coast Hospital, where more than 70% of the
tradesmen are from out of town.
Sekisui does not have a resort in its proposal
but wishes to construct 17 high-rise towers up
to 39m high, housing 1,470 apartments and
one hotel, squashed into the 20-hectare site.
Hardly a medium density development!
Sekisui states that 51% of the 648 people who
visited their Community Consultation
Sessions were against their proposal. DW
members were at most of their Community
Consultation Sessions and managed to
monitor 472 of the 648 people. 100% of the
472 we monitored were totally opposed to
Sekisui’s proposal and to Council amending
our Planning Scheme to accommodate it. We
have the signed feedback forms to verify this.
Sekisui have stated that there have been 17
amendments made to the SC Planning

Council staff have confirmed that this type of
amendment is unprecedented. Never before
has a major amendment been made in a
similar situation at the proposal stage.
Be aware in these final days, of course Sekisui
are going to do and say whatever they can to
coerce the public and Councillors into
thinking the Sunshine Coast’s economy will
go to rack and ruin if they don’t build this
monster development at Yaroomba.
We don’t need to spend the big bucks to
market the truth; we just need everybody to
write, email and/or text the Mayor and local
Councillors again and reiterate that we do not
want our Planning Scheme amended to
increase height limits.

Evan Aldridge, the spin doctor, is at it again
trying to defend Sekisui’s over-the-top
Yaroomba high-rise development to
which there is massive local and Sunshine
Coast objection.
BBS, their PR firm, rallied support from the
fringes of the shire who have no knowledge or
interest of what’s happening on the Coast. The
phone survey of the development that was
done is misleading in as much as they
didn’t tell people that it was a 17-tower, 10storey development. Of course people are
happy with the development if they are told of
potential benefits, which are exaggerated.
A five-star resort can still be built according
to the present town plan and the four-storey
limit, without destroying the visual amenity of
the area, and everyone will be a lot happier,
now and in the future.

Advertiser each week. Well done!!
Now for my gripe, which is about the amount
of Coolum local residents who do not pick up
the Advertiser from their nature strip or
driveway and leave it there for day/weeks on
end.
At some addresses, they simply leave your
publication, and also The Coolum News,
lying there until the weather breaks them up
and they wash away … or until I walk past
and throw them in their front yard or, if it’s
bin day, put it in their bin!
Perhaps your distributors could take a bit
more time and throw the papers further onto
properties so they don’t litter our beautiful
Coolum streetscapes? There are some
absolute slobs out there who care little or
nothing about our environment and our
streetscapes, and I don’t know what else can
be done to get these morons to simply pick up
their paper delivery!

I write this in support of Lynette Saxton
(Letters 19/3) regarding Sekisui House’s
proposed development.
Why on earth would Evan Aldridge
commission a private company to conduct a
survey of residents all over the Sunshine
Coast when other areas would not be affected
by the contrary-to-planning-scheme proposal?
To suggest that there is a two-thirds majority
support for the proposal, from a sample of
1,000, only proves that 666 people, yes, 666
people polled, support the proposal!
From which areas did these people come, Mr
Aldridge?
Sekisui House needs to be told by Council
that there is a 12-metre height restriction for
the area and a sacred Indigenous site is at risk,
and that they either comply with the Planning
Scheme or have their application refused!

Speaking with Councillor Robinson
at the library last week, I brought up
the deceptiveness of Sekisui’s 64%
approval figure for their proposed
high-rise development immediately
behind the dunes at Yaroomba. He
saw my point that, by asking totally
unaffected people in Maleny,
Caloundra, Kawana and Nambour,
they created a larger group of
respondents in which to hide the
numbers of locals who are against it
- in other words, those who will be
affected by it.
Councillor Robinson has promised
that he will ask for the figures of
Coolum and North Shore residents
in favour and against this proposal,
also what are the main concerns
identified
in
the
public
consultation. Even more suspect is
Sekisui’s phone poll of 400
Sunshine Coast residents which
brought the approval figure up to
74%. Hmm, now what exactly were
the questions they responded to?
Where do all these people in favour
of this project actually live? Let’s
find that out and send Sekisui to
build their 17 high-rise, wall-to-wall
buildings in their area, instead of

microcosm of our society.
Bullying on a massive scale leads to
war. Many children live in a
warzone daily, at home or at
school. One in three women suffer
the same fate. It is an epidemic, not
only in the west but, to a greater
extent, in nations with
patriarchal governments, or those
with no concern for the human
rights of women and children.
When women and children are
treated as second-class citizens,
their protection is in jeopardy.
This Middle Ages attitude that they
are somehow less worth than men,
is endemic still in our culture to a
degree, and more so in the
developing world. Humiliation and
intimidation is as great a weapon to
destroy victims as physical
confrontations. Words have power.
The court systems are not geared to
adequately determine motives and
actions represented by the written
word only, in official documents. It
is biased towards the rights of both
men and women to access children
in relationships breakdown, but with
dire consequences in some cases,
as with Rosie and Luke Batty.
Orders preventing contact or bail
conditions are weakly upheld, with
really no power to stop
those determined to retaliate, to get
their own way, such as the infamous
Man Monis in the Lindt Café
tragedy. Bullying is a scourge of
greater threat to our national
freedom and peace, than any
other strategy of attack, evident
at multiple levels in our society and
culture, undermining the very
tenants of our democracy.
“Love thy neighbour as you love
yourself” is merely an outdated cliché to many who lack
a moral compass and with seared
consciences, when it comes to their
narcissistic means of making sense
of their own lives, in relationships.
It is prevalent because so many hate
their own lives and want to punish
the innocent.

Lies, damn lies and statistics ...

community consultation” brochure
dropped in my letterbox by Sekisui
House last week reminded me of
that old saying: “There’s lies, damn
lies, and then there’s statistics.”
According to the brochure, 680
face-to-face interviews, that is
people seeing the proposal, resulted
in 18% for, 51% opposed and 31%
neutral. It would be just as valid for
the opponents to include the
‘neutral’ vote with the negative
(giving 82% against), as it was for
Sekisui House to include the neutral
with the positive (49% for). I would
have thought 18% for and 51%
against was a clearer indication of
the community’s views, with the
neutral respondents more likely to
reinforce that split as they became
more knowledgeable about the
issue.
It also appears that the opinions of
400 people, who merely responded
to a telephone survey of general
questions about a “hypothetical”
proposal, are given greater weight
than those of 680 people (1.7 times
the number), many of whom will be
directly impacted by the proposal,
and who presumably have seen and
discussed the proposal with the
proponents. Sounds like the reverse
of that other old saying, “believe
half of what you see but only a
quarter of what you hear”.
The truth is that the Yaroomba
high-rise proposal is illegal. Accept
the Town Plan’s rules, Sekisui
House, and move on.

growth of the area …” so people
can make the same decision we
have, to live or visit the Sunshine
Coast.
What they don’t get is why people
come here in the first place. It is
because this area is an attractive
alternative to Gold Coast high
rise. If Sekisui and other developers
are given the right to build
“medium-density” (their term) highrise here, our attraction will be gone
and we will become a second-rate
Gold Coast.

Celebrating Easter Concert
The Sunshine Coast Choral Society will be presenting the first concert
for 2015 at Caloundra Uniting Church on Sunday, March 29, at
2.30pm.
Music Director Adrian King has put together a program titled
“Celebrating Easter Choral Music”, including John Stainer’s “The
Crucifixion” and other choruses from Mozart’s “Requiem”, Faure’s
“Requiem” and Handel’s “Messiah”.
There will be opportunities for the audience to join in singing some of
the better-known pieces such as the “Hallelujah” chorus.
The Society is delighted to have James Petterson as a soloist for the
concert. James will be joining the choir to sing John Stainer’s “The
Crucifixion”. As a vocalist within the armed forces, he has performed in
representational duties including the Edinburgh Military Tattoo in
Sydney, Basel Tattoo in Switzerland, in Japan and on numerous tours of
duty.
This will be his first performance with the Society.
Accompanist for the concert is Janet Brewer, who is well-known for her
chamber music recitals with the Pacific Chamber Players.

With our Annual General Meeting coming up, our enthusiastic

donated to the Coolum-Peregisan RSL for Anzac Day and for
Remembrance Day later in the year.
Our General Business Meetings continue to be on the 2nd Tuesday of
the month in the evening at 7pm at Meals on Wheels in Coolum. The
next meeting will be on April 14 in conjunction with the AGM. Within
our club membership, a group meets regularly on Friday mornings for
craft and coffee, and on the third Tuesday afternoon of the month to
exchange books, for more coffee and company.

Your Say For Noosa
JOIN the discussion on Council’s YourSay Noosa forum to help shape
the Shire’s next social plan.
Council is currently drafting The Noosa Social Plan 2016-2023. As part
of developing the Plan, Council needs to hear from residents about
their aspirations, our strengths as a community, and any gaps in social
services and infrastructure across the Shire.
From there, Council will develop priorities to shape its activities for the
next seven years.
Social Plan Reference Group spokesman Cr Frank Pardon encouraged
residents to visit http://yoursay.noosa.qld.gov.au and join the
discussion.
“We’re asking Noosa’s residents to tell us what they love about the
Noosa community; what they think the social challenges are; and what
should we do about it,” Cr Pardon said.
We know Noosa people are passionate about the environment but we
also want them to tell us how we can improve our social capital. Our
aim is to look after people and enhance their lifestyle.”
Cr Pardon said community feedback would help shape the plan.

Despite a 5-0 win at Rainbow Beach on Saturday,
the Men’s Gold Division just failed to make their
playoffs, and the Sunday game at Wellington Point
was not played.
Men’s Bronze Division finished top of their ladder
and hosted their playoffs on Sunday. Algester
defeated Musgrave Hill in the morning but were
no match for Coolum in the final. The home side
won 4 rinks to 1, and will now go to Tweed Heads
on Saturday to contest the finals.
The Men’s Premier 7s Division 3 also finished top
of their section ladder after a 3-0 win over
Wynnum Manly. They will go to Bramble Bay on
Saturday to play in the finals.
The Mt Coolum Aged Care Prestige Open Pairs will
be held on the Saturday and Sunday of the Easter
weekend, with $5,000 prize money. There are still
some spots available.
Don’t forget the Ladies’ Fiesta on Wednesday, July
15 - $1,500 in cash and prizes and lots of
homemade goodies and craftwares.

The NDTA (Noosa District Tennis Association)
Australian Open junior tournament was held here
last Saturday, March 14, with 44 participants.
Of the Coolum players, Emma Willis was runnerup in Orange Division, Beau McWaters won Green
Division, Mitch Willis was runner-up in C-Grade,
and Kristy Drain won B-Grade. Congratulations to
all players.
NDTA fixture teams are being formulated for
winter fixture season so, if any players are keen,
please let Andrew Ash know as soon as

Coolum Travellers have had a great season to
date, being second, with the top-three teams
having only one point different. On Friday, we
played the third team, Nambour, and were
defeated by 46-30. Congratulations to the new
Nambour team. They are improving with every
match and are a great asset to the competition.
Social tennis has proved popular in the last
couple of weeks with good attendance. We
welcomed back Noel Messer from his travels.
COOLUM FOOTBALL CLUB
Coolum FC Women’s Premier Reserves
Coolum FC started the season in the greatest
possible manner - a 1-0 win over Caboolture, with
good team performance. Player of the match went
to young Chloe, followed closely by Bree and
Laurne P. Goal-scorer was Bree. Well done to all
players and, also, we have a big game next week we are up against Maroochydore. All in all, a great
start to the season.

Final Score: Coolum FC 1 - 0 Caboolture SC
Coolum FC Under 15 Division 1
Coolum FC started their season with a bang,
beating Maroochydore 4-2 in front of a cheering,
supportive crowd seated in the Pam Daines
Stand. Maroochydore dominated possession in
the first half; however Riley Korbaleff and Dylan
McKenzie struck low finishes across the face of
goal to give the home side the advantage at the
break. Within the first twenty minutes of the
second half, Coolum played the most beautiful
passing, positioning and ball-retention football I
have seen from these players in over three years.
Callum Regan soon made it 3-0 with a left-foot,
low finish, before Maroochydore hit back quickly
to make it 3-1, and then 3-2. Coolum were not
going to let the hard work they had put in go
astray and, after winning a penalty with 5 minutes
to go, Dylan McKenzie stepped up to make no
mistake. A great win and some fantastic football
played by this team.

Final Score: Coolum FC 4 - 2 Maroochydore FC
Coolum FC Under 15 Division 2
A great start to the season with the newly formed
team, made up of mostly under-age players,
playing against the Maroochydore team at Coolum
on a beautiful Saturday morning. Both teams were
understandably rusty in their first hit out at a fulllength match, but quickly settled down to play a
tight end-for-end game. Maroochydore took the
lead early, but a stunning long-range goal from
Max O’Dell gave the Coolum team plenty of
confidence, and a second from Deklan Naylor had
the home team going into the break one goal up.
Coolum produced a much better possession game
in the second half and, after numerous chances,
finally slotted in their third and sealed the match.
While all players played very well, Eamon Kriz
showed how much he has improved over the off
season and played a fine defensive role.

Final Score: Coolum FC 3 - 1 Maroochydore FC
Coolum FC Under 14 Division 1 Girls
What a team we have here. With our numbers
down and the heat in the middle of the day taking
its toll, the girls put in a courageous display
against Buderim. We were very unlucky to be
down 3-0 at the break, as our teamwork and
positional play was outstanding. Harmony and
Chelsea were standouts in the midfield, along
with Ash and Maeve chasing everything down in
defence. Summer scored a great individual goal
and, despite a tenacious performance from
everyone in the second half, we ended up going
down 3-1.

Coolum FC Under 11 Wallabies Blue
A great start to the season with a promising
performance from all the boys. The team is
starting to blend well, with outstanding games
from new boys Ned and Riley. Max and Tui were
solid in defence, and Kit and James were
constantly at the North Shore midfielders. Freddy
made several first-class saves and was deserved
best on ground. Despite losing 3-2 against North
Shore, this was a great game.

Coolum FC Under 10 Wallabies Blue
Coolum FC played a really nail-bitting game,
losing 3-2 and nearly snatching a draw after
touching the post twice and the crossbar once.
For players who never played together before, I
reckon they do a great job. Wallabies Green are a
great team who I’m sure will do really well this
season.
Coolum FC Under 9 Manta Rays
A great game by the U9 Manta Rays, with all team
members present for the first game of the season.
Izaak Wollin scored the first goal of the season in
his very first game, so he was very happy. Cooper
Spencer was the other goal-scorer in the game,
which ended up as a 2-all draw. The players all
performed well as a team and had heaps of fun,
especially eating the frozen oranges at half time.
Quinn Atkinson played a great game in defence,
as well as saving a great shot whilst in goal as the
keeper.
Coolum FC Under 8 Stingrays
The U8 Stingrays kicked off the season with an
emphatic team performance away at Noosa
Cougars. Despite the sticky conditions, the boys
were full of running. Mitch, Kaden, Jasper and
Bohdi defended in numbers, with Max and Jude
commanding the midfield and moving the ball
well, resulting in goals from Luca H (5), Luca M (2)
and Fionn (1). A super effort from all the boys.
Coolum FC Under 8 Starfish
What a great start to the year - the whole team
was so keen and excited to play that it showed
throughout the game. Our shooting and passing
game was excellent, especially Tane who was
everywhere and my pick for man of the match.
Rory, Taj and Xaniel ran their hearts out, and what
a start for our new guys Dean, Keelan, George
and Jaiah. Great teamwork, everyone.
Coolum FC Under 7 Killer Whales
The Killer Whales had a fantastic start to the new
season. All players showed great sportsmanship
in encouraging new team members. Jasmine had
a great first game of football ever. We were all
excited to see our teammate Sebastian cheering
from the sideline as he’s out injured. Charlie,
Phoenix and Thai were great at passing and
defending, while Cailan and Noah F ran well in the
heat, taking lots of big kicks.
Coolum FC Under 6 Seahorses
The first game of the season was a good start for
the Under 6 Seahorses who played NYU. All
players played extremely well for their first-ever
game of soccer. All the boys have been training
very well leading up to the game, and their efforts
on the weekend were outstanding. The boys were
excited to be playing and enjoyed scoring
goals. The Under 6 Seahorses displayed very good
teamwork, and they are all looking forward to their
next game.
COOLUM HOOKERS FISHING CLUB
Hi to all Hookers members. What a great weekend
for the fishing comp at Toorbul Caravan Park.
Everyone had a great time and the fish were on
the bite.
Congratulations goes to Johnny B for winning the
Fish of the Month, Heaviest Catch and Offshore.
Well done to Chris B for taking out the Women’s
Comp with her bream and whiting.
Apparently, Pete F caught some very nice
flathead.
Well done, everyone. Unfortunately, there were no
winners in the Juniors Comp.
Next month is the Borumba Dam camp and we’re
catching Redclaw.
