* Nicene Creed
We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is seen and unseen.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the scriptures;
he ascended into heaven and is seated
at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to
judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
was incarnate of the Holy Spirit
and the virgin Mary
and became truly human.
For our sake he was crucified
under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
We believe in the Holy Spirit,
the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is
worshiped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic
and apostolic church.
We acknowledge one baptism
for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.
* Prayers of Intercession (see Celebrate Insert)
AM: Called to know, love, and follow you...
AM: Lord in your mercy,. C: hear our prayer.
The prayers are concluded:
P: Trusting your love and healing, O God,... C: Amen.
Peace
St. Paul wrote, "Therefore, since we are justified through faith, we have peace with God
through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5: 1)
P: The peace of the Lord be with you always.
C: And also with you.
The people greet one another with a sign of Christ’s peace and may say
“Peace be with you” or similar words.

In the night in which he was betrayed,
our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup,
gave thanks,
and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood,
shed for you and for all people
for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.
full of grace and truth.
We remember our new birth in his
death and resurrection.
We look with hope for his coming.
P: Holy God, we long for your Spirit.
Come among us.
Bless this meal.
May your Word take flesh in us.
Awaken your people.
Fill us with your light.
Bring the gift of peace on earth.
P: All praise and glory are yours,

A Well-Balanced Church
The owner of a new puppy got a good laugh when the little dog, out for a walk, had an itch. The
trouble was that the itchy spot was accessible only to a hind leg. So, while still walking, the pup
tried to scratch and tumbled over, rolling a couple of times before coming to rest.
In several places throughout
Scripture, the apostle Paul writes
about the church as the body of
Christ, and of the importance of each
member. Just as the dog needed
each leg to stay balanced while
walking, so the church needs all the
different God-given gifts of its
members: preachers and teachers,
friendly visitors, generous givers,
musicians and singers, wise parents
and imaginative children, people to
produce and distribute meals,
newsletters, lesson materials, and
on and on.
When we start thinking that some
part of Christ’s body isn’t necessary,
we risk taking quite a tumble!

Observations From the Church Office
The Recipe According to Aunt Maddie
Admit it. You’ve always had a suspicion, but were hesitant to
make the accusation. That recipe you pried out of the hands of
your aunt, or your grandmother, or best friend - somehow, despite
following every last detail to the letter, your cake, cookies, bread
or casserole just never quite measured up to the original. You
begged and cajoled and promised never to reveal the secret to another soul, and, finally,
success. Heaving a sigh, the original cook dutifully wrote out the magic formula to that dish that
everyone loved.
You race home, and can’t wait to reproduce the masterpiece in your own kitchen, but somehow
your best efforts not withstanding, something just seems to be missing. You double check the
ingredients and amounts, and you’re spot on. Yet, it just isn’t quite right. You love her, but you
can’t help yourself form wondering, did dear old auntie leave out a key ingredient?
I have experienced that sense of achieving a minor failure with someone else’s recipe, and, I
confess, I’ve been guilty of emulating Aunt Maddie. I am by no means a great cook, but I have
one dish that I am frequently asked to bring to family dinners. It’s a carrot ring. Well, I like to call it
a carrot ring because that sounds so much more healthy than the decadent circle of flavor it
actually is. Everyone loves it, and everyone wants the recipe. And everyone gets the “recipe.”
But, sometimes, I just can’t seem to remember the exact proportion of ingredients, or the oven
temperature, or the cooking time (I am getting older, you know.) It’s not that I’m consciously
trying to be deceptive, but, hey, it’s MY carrot ring.
We know it’s wrong, but sometimes we can’t help wanting to jealousy guard our most prized
secrets. We enjoy the accolades, the adoring fans. The constant requests to share our
creations gives us a sense of importance and value. If everyone can do what we do, and can
have what we have, do we matter as much? Perhaps we matter more, for isn’t it truly love for
others when we give away what we most prize?
Jesus didn’t come to live among us to hide the secret of eternal life. He didn’t share the promise
of salvation with only a select few, and He didn’t omit the key requirements for obtaining
forgiveness of our sins. The recipe for God’s grace is open for all to see. The New Testament
gives us all we need to know to share in the masterpiece that is God’s great love. If we follow that
recipe, we will have success.
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I feel the need to reprint and distribute several dozen copies of a
certain carrot ring recipe.

It also allows us to
review and think about
the key points once
the service is over.
How to Take Notes
3. Which hymns reflected the message of the sermon?
4. What did you learn from the sermon?
There is no best way.
Feel free to use the

questions the sermon
may raise in your
mind.
