Holy Communion at Peace
We welcome all baptized believers in Jesus Christ to receive Holy Communion. White
grape juice is available for those who cannot drink wine. Those who do not commune are
encouraged to come forward for a blessing.
We Welcome Children
Children are welcomed and encouraged to participate in worship at Peace. So that they,
and all, may experience worship meaningfully, please note:
Nurture:
We offer Children's Time for children ages 4 through 9
(younger if accompanied by an adult) during the
regular sermon time.
Comfort:
We provide a staffed, fully-equipped nursery for
children 3 and younger. If your child becomes
restless, you may wish to worship with her/him
through the viewing window and via piped-in sound in
the nursery. Please ask an usher for directions.
Safety:
We ask that an adult accompany any child who is
outside the building.

Christian Education Opportunities
We welcome all who wish to join us as
we grow in faith and spirituality.
We offer classes Sunday mornings September through May from 9:45 to 10:45 for
4-year-olds through adult.
PreK through 5th grade students start with an opening
in the Fellowship Hall at 9:45.
PreK-K - Room 4
1st grade - Room 3
2nd-3rd grades - Room 5
4th-5th grades - Room 1
Pre-Confirmation/Confirmation - Pastor Craig's office (typically 6th - 8th grades)

Calling walkers of all ages
The 12th Annual Walk to End Homelessness in Charles County is coming Saturday November 15,
2014, rain or shine. The walk begins at the La Plata Town Hall, continues for about 3 miles around
the town, ending back at the Town Hall. All the funds raised go toward supporting the Safe Nights
program. For several years now, there have been as many as 25-40 people representing Peace at
the walk; It would be great to have more than 40 walking this year.
If you walk as a member of the Peace team the registration fee is $15. Walking alone it is $20.
Please register on-line at www.lifestylesofmd.org. or go to www.myplc.org and click on the WALK
TO END HOMELESSNESS logo to register. Please select “Individual Registration” option, then
“Join a Team” at the end of the process - our team is Peace Lutheran Church. We also have
registration forms available on the table in the Narthex/lobby for those who are not able to sign up
on-line. Please use the list to let us know how many people from your family will be participating in
the march..
Makin' a List
In Daniel Defoe’s classic Robinson Crusoe, the shipwrecked protagonist begins keeping a tally of
his life. He lists his problems as well as a corresponding inventory of things for which to give
thanks.
Crusoe’s pros and cons surprise him. For every evil, a good is present to even it out. For example,
the castaway doesn’t have any clothes — but the weather’s so warm he doesn’t need any. He lost
all his provisions at sea — but has access to water and fresh fruit.
Under the “evil” category, Crusoe writes: “I am singled out and separated, as it were, from all the
world to be miserable.” Yet the corresponding “good” puts things into perspective: “But I am
singled out too from all the ship’s crew to be spared from death; and he that miraculously saved me
from death can deliver me from this condition.”
When you’re tempted to hold a pity party, step back and thank God, your Rescuer, for all the
blessings he provides.

Observations From the Church Office
The “Lick” Factor
I have a dog. Now that may not seem like a big deal, but in the case
of this particular canine, it really is. Darby is a diminutive
Maltese/Yorkie mix (Morkie). During his brief seven years he has
adopted a number of different personas including a World War II
Flying Ace, a legendary Irish countryman (Darby O’Gill), and even
a cold-nosed biker dog. His acquiescence to my wife Pat’s desire to costume him is notable. But
what makes this tiny package so special is his love for people. I call it the “Lick: factor.
You see, Darby is a certified “Pets on Wheels” dog. And he willingly spends
many hours at local nursing homes doing something that few other creatures,
four legs or two, can do. He brings a badly needed smile into the lives of lonely
and often neglected people. This past weekend included Halloween, and Pat
asked me to join her as she and Darby made a visit. My job was to carry a bag
of hats so that those who wished to could have a bit of a “dress up” for the
occasion. The hallways of the nursing home were lined with residents in
wheelchairs, some were awake and aware, others were napping. Methodically,
we moved down the corridor stopping in each room to ask if the occupant
wanted to see Cowboy Darby (yes, he had a cowboy hat.) It wasn’t surprising
that some were anxious and excited to meet their little visitor, and Darby obliged with his special
blend of patience and gregariousness. But, others were not so sure. In one room, Pat asked if
the lady would like to see Darby, and, raising her arms furiously, the woman called out “I can’t
see!” “I can’t see anything, don’t you know!!” And this is where the magic really began. Pat
moved closer with Darby in her arms, apologized to the woman, then gently took her hand and
placed it on his back so that she could “see” him with her hands. The woman’s face lit up, and
when Darby responded with a gentle lick of her arm, I truly believe her day brightened just a bit.
Darby loves to give kisses (the “Lick” Factor) and he does so without judgement or reservation.
One woman who had been the recipient of many of those dog kisses said to my wife with a tear in
her eye “That’s the first kiss I’ve had in a long time.” We encountered some who said they were
afraid of dogs, but Darby’s patience and gentle persuasiveness often overcame their fears. I was
in awe of both my wife and Darby for their unselfish devotion of time and love to these strangers.
Their visits can have a lasting impact on the lives of those who must reside in these places. One
gentleman who had serious physical problems loved to paint, and couldn’t wait to show us the
portrait he had done of Darby from a photo Pat had left on an earlier trip. He was beaming, and so
were we. Jesus would be proud of this pair, and He would encourage each of us to follow their
example in providing a little bit of love to those in need. What are you doing today?
And now, if you’ll excuse me, I have a dog and a wife to hug.
