Seton Catholic
At Seton Catholic, during the month of January, we are
praying for world peace through the intercession of our
mother, Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton.
Though it is depressing to see so much violence in the
world, each of us can make a difference in our family and
in our school by bringing peace and understanding. January is peacemaker month! Join us in being peacemakers.
During January Regents, Seton Catholic has a regular
school schedule. This week is also Catholic Schools week
and stay tuned for news about all the exciting activities
planned.
On January 16th, we will have a 1 p.m. dismissal so
the staff can work on planning for our Middle States accreditation.

the Diocesan Census Initiative.
The committee has been meeting,
discussing different strategies, and
planning the most efficient way of
executing the census. As with any
opportunity, we can not spell success without “you.” In an effort to
help make this a smooth operation,
committee members will be calling you to help with the
census. As you are called upon by a member, we ask that
you pray over the vocation in which you were baptized and
give a thoughtful consideration for the task at hand. Your

WALK FOR LIFE
This Sunday, January 18th, at 2 p.m. is the Annual Walk
for Life in Plattsburgh. The walk starts at the Neumann
Center and ends at St. John’s Church. At St. John’s,
speakers and special guests will give talks on the different
pro-life issues of today. We hope to see you there!!

goal for the 2014-2015 Bishop’s Fund Appeal.
It is the generous benevolence of the many that helped
St. Augustine’s Church attain its successes. Thank you all

As previously mentioned, Fr. Alan is selling a classic 1910 upright piano. This fine
musical instrument plays real well and is
very aesthetic considering her age.
The original asking price WAS $300, but now she is being
sold for the low, low price of $100! You can not go wrong
for a beautiful antique conversation piece that can entertain

Baby Shower For Birthright
On Monday January 19th at 7 p.m., The Catholic
Daughters will be sponsoring a Baby Shower Fundraiser
for the local Birthright Chapter. All parishioners are invited to attend the festivities. A bassinet has been placed
in the back of the church for those who wish to donate
baby presents earlier than the 19th. This is sure to be a
great time to be had by all, hope to see you there!!

History Tidbit of the Week: St. Anthony, The Abbot
Anthony was born at Coma, in Egypt, about the middle of the third century. He was the son of wellto-do parents, and on their death, in his twentieth year, he inherited their possessions. He had a desire
to imitate the life of the Apostles and the early Christians, and one day, on hearing in
the church the Gospel words, "If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell all thou hast", he received them as
spoken to himself, disposed of all his property and goods, and devoted himself exclusively to religious exercises.
After fifteen years of this life, at the age of thirty-five, Anthony was determined to withdraw from the
habitations of men and retire in absolute solitude. He crossed the Nile, and on a mountain near the east bank, he found an old fort
into which he shut himself, and lived there for twenty years without seeing the face of man, food being thrown to him over the wall.
He was at times visited by pilgrims, whom he refused to see; but gradually a number of would-be disciples established themselves
in caves and in huts around the mountain, Thus a colony was formed, who begged Anthony to come forth and be their guide in the
spiritual life. At length, about the year 305, he yielded to their importunities an emerged from his retreat, and, to the surprise of all,
he appeared to be as when he had gone in, not emaciated, but vigorous in body and mind.
For about six years, he devoted himself to the instruction and organization of the great body of monks that had grown up
around him; but then he once again withdrew into the inner desert that lay between the Nile and the Red Sea, where still stands
the monastery that bears his name, Der Mar Antonios. Here he spent the last forty-five years of his life, in a seclusion, not as strict
as previously, for he freely saw those who came to visit him, and he used to cross the desert with considerable frequency. On two
occasions, he went to Alexandria, once to strengthen the Christian martyrs in the persecution of 311, and once at the close of his
life, around 350, to preach against the Arians. He died at the age of a hundred and five, and St. Jerome places his death around
356-357. At Anthony’s request, his grave was kept secret by the two disciples who buried him, lest his body should become an
object of reverence.
