Forming Intentional Disciples: The Path to Knowing and
— a book by Sherry A. Weddell
What is Discipleship? - The Spiral of Silence [Catholic
discomfort with overt spiritual passion, with living their
faith “out loud”] must end if a vibrant culture of discipleship is to be fostered at the parish level. That means recognizing, first of all, that discipleship is never unconscious. What do I mean?
A couple of years ago a friend was being trained as a
catechist in a large archdiocese. She was solemnly informed in a class on spiritual growth that “one day you
just wake up, and you’re different.” This very common
myth in Catholic culture is, to put it gently, false. How do
we know? Because it is false in absolutely every other
area of adult life. You might as well hope to wake up one
morning and find that you became a brain surgeon in your
sleep. Yet when it comes to the experience of being
transformed by the following of Christ, some Catholics suddenly begin to speak and act as though the
process were magical.
In the past, I have given a number of carefully documented presentations on the theology of evangelization,
most of which were received with varying levels of polite
indifference. But when we began to use the phrase
“intentional disciple,” people suddenly snapped to attention. Of course, “unintentional discipleship” is impossible, but using explicit language like “intentional discipleship” seemed to break the mysterious spell that makes it

Following Jesus
difficult for many Catholics to think and speak of discipleship in meaningful, real-life ways.
How then do we become disciples? By acting like
Simon Peter:
Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; henceforth you will be catching men.” And when
they had brought their boats to land, they left
everything and followed him. (Luke 5:10-11)
Simon’s experience was not exceptional, either in human terms or in the tradition of the Church. No one voluntarily sheds his or her job, home, and whole way of life
accidentally or unconsciously. Simon Peter’s “drop the
net” decision is what we mean by “intentional.” From
the moment he dropped his nets to follow Jesus, he
was a disciple.
Peter did not, of course, know what the full ramifications of that decision would be for himself or for the
world. No disciple ever does. And it would take the
rest of his life to become a saint. But he had consciously begun the journey.
It is the same with us. Intentional discipleship is not
accidental or merely cultural. It is not just a matter of
“following the rules.” A disciple’s primary motivation
comes from within, out of a Holy Spirit-given “hunger
and thirst for righteousness.” All things serve and flow
from the central thing: the worship and love of the
Blessed Trinity with one’s whole heart, soul, mind,
and strength, and therefore the love of one’s neighbor
as oneself…
The above passage is a
powerful excerpt from a
book that we have on order—Forming Intentional
Disciples. If you would like

Your birthday verse, Psalm 139:13-16
“You formed my inmost being; you knit me in my
mother’s womb. I praise you, so wonderfully you made
me; wonderful are your works! My very self you knew;
my bones were not hidden from you, fashioned as in the
depths of the earth. Your eyes foresaw my actions; in
your book all are written down; my days were shaped,
before one came to be.”
