A NEW YEAR - A NEW START
Let’s all resolve to boost Lodge
AND WAY TO GO! HAPPY NEW YEAR! membership
Message from the Grand Exalted Ruler, JOHN D. AMEN
It is the start of a new calendar year, and now is the time to
make a personal resolution regarding your Lodge
Membership situation. Resolve to call upon all Members to
help improve Lodge membership numbers because
membership is our number one issue. Resolve to work these
final months of the Lodge year for a plus membership year
in your Lodge. Resolve to act now!
Lodge Secretaries and Exalted Rulers: Do not go it alone – ask
for help from your key Members. Enlist the help of your
Past Exalted Rulers Association. Additionally, you should
engage the Proposers of delinquent Members to call on their
initiates.
All local delinquent Members should receive a personal visit
from a key Lodge Member. This will enable Lodge officials
to determine if the delinquent Member is sick or in distress
and should be the subject of a review by the Lodge Standing
Relief Committee. The pride of distressed Members will
often prevent them from talking about their situation on the
phone. You know the Grand Lodge and State Association
dues and per capitas have already been paid by the Lodge,
and if you allow the Member to be dropped from the rolls
then you will have gained nothing this year.
“You lose sight of things… and when you travel, everything
balances out.” – Daranna Gidel

Special consideration should be given to delinquent Members
who have attained Life Member status. These Members have
paid at least 30 years of dues and may be in a situation
where family members are making financial decisions for
the Member. It is a shame to coldly drop these long-standing
Members who may well be incapable of making their own
financial decisions. Again, face-to-face visits with a
delinquent Member is imperative.
Form a committee to call upon Members who have been
dropped from the rolls the past five years, and remind them
of the good works your Lodge does in your community. Let’s
all pull together to get the Plus 1 status for the Lodge and
for the Order. That’s all for now. See you on the road...

Exalted Ruler’s Message
’Tis the Season... Just like our recent rains, December has stormed by us as we
prepare to welcome in the New Year! Tradition continued as we celebrated the
time shared with our beloved, departed members and their families at our Annual
Elks Memorial Service on Sunday the 7th.Thank you to the Officers that supported
this wonderful Elk’s Tradition.
Santa, the Girl Scouts and many Volunteers entertained our Members’ children at
the Annual Kids Christmas Party on the 10th. And close to 200 of you enjoyed a
delicious turkey with all the fixins’ at the Annual Members Lunch on Saturday the
13th as the Band played.
And speaking of next year, tickets are on sale for the New Year’s Eve Bash here at the Lodge so don’t miss out
on Dinner and Dancing to ring in the new year with family and friends.
There will be no slowing down around here in January as we prepare for the Hoop Shoot on the 10th, Comedy
Night on the 23rd, and the PER Dinner on the 30th. Stay tuned for more exciting events coming soon!
Have a Wonderful Christmas with your loved ones and a Safe New Year.
Fraternally yours, Daniel Kenny
SECRETARY’S CORNER
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! Time certainly flies. Accordingly, I have been your Secretary
for six months now. Fleeting, as it may seem, allow me to share a few observations
on this tenure. We are very fortunate for the “behind the scenes” staff we have to
run the day-to-day operations. Their longevity holds a strong “institutional history”
that is so valuable…especially for a rookie Secretary. There is a lot that is necessary
to keep us up and running smoothly. The office personnel with Luda, Sherrill and
Natalie keep us on top of things, such as accounting, membership, coordinating
programs and relationships with our District, State and National organizations, to
mention a few. Maintenance staff with Francisco, Raphael and Raul has a combined
100 years of working with our Lodge. That historical knowledge of how best to
Steve Dworetzky
operate the facility is priceless. I believe you would all agree with me that California
Catering, with Tim, Adolfo and Rigo was one of the best moves the Lodge has ever
made. So keep in mind that while you are enjoying the many facets of our Lodge, it stems from a wellcoordinated staff that deserves big thanks whenever you see them.
With that said, the Lodge had its finest audit from the District and National affiliates this year. They scrutinize
our financials and procedures, as well as the safety issues with the physical plant. A lot of this is due to the fine
work of the above mentioned and the work of our auditing committee, led by Bob Olson. It is a somewhat
rigorous procedure and one not to be taken lightly.
Feel free to contact me about future article input. What would you like to know more about?

ELK’S IN ACTION
By Roger Cutler – Chairman
O
nce again, the committee met on November 20th,
at the Lodge to deliver the Elk’s annual donation
of turkey’s and under garments. We previously ordered
4,000 pounds of turkey’s from Costco. They have
been very helpful to have the turkey’s boxed and
palletized for us.
Our first stop was at the Samaritan House, where
we donated 2,500 pounds; about 180 turkey’s. The
Samaritan house supplies food for over 1,200 families
on a daily basis.

Through
your
donations, you should
be proud that your
money has been
responsible for giving
300 families a turkey
for Thanksgiving and
new undergarments for a lot of homeless people.
We the committee, thank you for the opportunity
to help make some of our less fortunate people in the
local community a little bit happier during the holidays.
Our second load, went to the Second Harvest Food
Bank and we delivered 1,500 pounds of turkeys, and
about 120 birds.
We then proceeded to the St. Vincent de Paul

Applications for qualifying 2015 graduates and
application is due in the Lodge Office no later than
January 9, 2015.
This program is to provide scholarships to a child or
grandchild (or step-child, step-grandchild, or legal ward)
of Elks who are members in good standing for the 20142015 school year. Additionally, this program applies to
deceased Elks who were members in good standing at
the time of their demise.
Each year the Elks Lodge of San Mateo
sponsors an essay contest with a theme
relating to Americanism. Students in
Fifth through Eighth grades are
encouraged to participate by writing an

PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE MEANS TO ME?”
The first, second and third place winners from each grade
level will be awarded a cash prize. First place winners
will be awarded a $100.00 prize. Second and Third place
winners will be awarded a $50.00 prize. The winners
will then have an opportunity to proceed to the State

on Friday, January 30, 2015. Visit www.elks.org/ENF/

the student’s essays. We will be receiving the entrants
the second week of January 2015 and reading them for
the next few weeks. If you are interested in being part of
the committee and helping us judge, please contact Luda
at the Lodge or contact Tim Goll, Americanism Chairman
at [email protected]

The Golf Reporter
By Mike Reyna
The golf season has come to an end. We had our last
tourney at Poplar Creek on 11/10 and closed the season with our dinner
on 11/12. I would like to thank Tim and his crew for a wonderful steak
dinner. Both the meal and the service were great. Also thanks to the
ladies in the office (Luda, Sherrill and Natalie). They do a great job in
not only supporting the golf but the entire Lodge as well.

the $10 penalty. Schedules were handed out at the end of year dinner

In House Bowlers
Bocce Time
By Gene Frauendorfer
By Dan Ruiz
Only 3 weeks of bowling in November – with 27-200
games and 4-600 series. Top Bowlers were Dave
Villaroman with 6-200 games plus 609-654 and 640
series; Steve Panelli, 218-200 games plus 607 series;
Craig Thomas, 231 game (73 pins over average);
Brandon Savage, 146-145-144 series (66 pins over
series average); Lamonte Lovering, 214-214 games.
Happy New Year to all you, bocce fans. How time
flies. Is it really 2015 already? As we embrace the
new year, let us be thankful for all the good things in
our lives, and may we enjoy health and a fruitful
year.
As we look forward to our spring bocce tournament in
March, the committee is considering whether to
expand the tournament from seven weeks to
fourteen weeks. This would allow for a greater
opportunity to fellowship with other bocce players
and extend the level of competition. Please share
your thoughts about this with our committee
members: John Mangiante, Tom Ricci, Ross Mandt,
Stan Gross, Mike McQueen, Al Escobar, Mike Dillon,
Don Robertson, Julian Cane, and Dan Ruiz.
Other High Rollers for Monday were Mark Weitz, 213;
Doug Moffitt, 208; Bill Swain, 202; Daniel Kenny, 49
pins over series average; Brandon Savage, 146-145144 series.
High Rollers for Tuesday were Ken Braband, 165-160159 series; Norman Goldau, 136-135-129 series.
High Rollers for Wed. 4:30 – Joe Koman, 193 game
(50 pins over average); Bob Adams, 153-150-143
series; Paul Walsh, 154-154-146 series; Joe Caruana,
157-153-147 series.
Some bocce history revisited: Throughout the centuries,
bocce enjoyed rapid growth as one of Europe’s most
popular pastimes; so much so that one point, several
governments began to regulate its usage. The
popularity of the game reached such a level in Italy
that on December 11, 1576, the Republic of Venice
publicly condemned it and thereafter punished
disobedient citizens with fines and imprisonment. Even
the Catholic Church officially prohibited any clergyman
from playing the game by declaring bocce a gambling
device. Yet, bocce survived and flourished.
High Rollers for Wed. 7:30 – Lamonte Lovering, 214214; Jabari Norton, 220; David Broderick, 212-201;
Kendall Miller, 202-203; John Mangiante, 224 plus
584 series; Jim Siri, 154-147-145 series.
High Rollers for Thursday – Dave Villaroman, 225-224205 series for 654 series; Craig Thomas, 205; Steve
Panelli, 218-200-189 series for 607 series; Craig
Thomas, 231 plus 568 series; Dave Villaroman, 223222-195 plus 640 series; Dave Villaroman, 240 plus
609 series.
Quote of the month: “It is one of the most beautiful
compensations of this life that no man can sincerely
try to help another without helping himself.” Ralph
Waldo Emerson
P.S. Special thanks to our own Mike Cook for sharing
many wonderful quotes with me.

Is returning
to
San Mateo
Elks Lodge
After 19 years in California, this New York City native is finally learning to speak English.
Jeff’s clean comedy examines his particular life experiences, which include being the
only white kid on his Little League team in Queens, having a Chinese wife who orders
from take-out menus in fluent Mandarin, and raising a pre-teen son who calls himself
“Jewnese,” because he says it sounds better than “Chine-ish.”
Jeff recently made his national TV debut on CBS as a comedian on the “Late Late Show
with Craig Ferguson.”
Jeff was cast by Sandy Hackett, the late Buddy Hackett’s son, to play the principal role
of Joey Bishop in the long-running musical tribute “The Rat Pack Is Back,” in San
Francisco, Chicago, and Las Vegas. Jeff is also credited and appears in the blockbuster
film “The Pursuit of Happyness,” starring Will Smith.
Jeff has been entertaining people all around North America for over 14 years, including
audiences of more than 10,000 people at the ARCO Arena (in Sacramento) and the
Anaheim Convention Center. His down-to-earth style and resemblance to popular TV
characters has led to great shows at clubs, colleges, and corporate functions.
Jeff won the “Comedian of the Year - 2003” in the SF Bay Area Cabaret Competition. Prior to comedy, Jeff worked as an
engineer, using his two degrees from MIT. He also wrote, produced, and starred in a music video, and is a HUGE Jackie
Chan fan. Clearly, Jeff has A.D.D. and forgot what he was going to say next.
“Chicago Steve” Barkley is a 27 year comedy veteran of
stage and screen, a high energy comedian that brings an
array of accents along with a twisted sense of humor.
He headlines comedy clubs all over the US, Canada, Mexico
and even Guam! He’s appeared on “Showtime,” (five times)
“Evening at the Improv,” ABC’s “Foul ups, Bleeps and
Blunders” and was a $10,000.00 winner on “Americas
Funniest People.”
He has worked with such comics as Jerry Seinfeld, Whoopie
Goldberg, Gary Shandling, Kevin Pollak, Dana Carvey, even
Sid Caesar, Milton Berle and Danny Thomas!

Health watch: Things to consider for New Year
10 STEPS TOWARD A LONGER
HEALTHIER LIFE
1. Don’t smoke.
2. Build physical and mental activities into every day.
3. Eat a healthy diet rich in whole grains, vegetables,
and fruits, and substitute healthier monounsaturated
and polyunsaturated fats for unhealthy saturated
fats and trans fats.
4. Take a daily multivitamin, and be sure to get enough
calcium and vitamin D.
5. Maintain a healthy weight.
6. Challenge your mind.
7. Build a strong social network.
8. Protect your sight, hearing, and general health by
following preventive care guidelines.
9. Floss, brush, and see a dentist regularly. Poor oral
health may have many repercussions, including poor
nutrition, unnecessary pain, and possible even a
higher risk of heart disease and stroke.
10. Discuss with your doctor whether you need any
medication – perhaps to control high blood pressure,
treat osteoporosis, or lower cholesterol – to help
you stay healthy.
Tomorrow, is
the first blank
page of a 365
page book.
Write a
good one.

improvement. We’re going to get them next year,
right guys? That was a rhetorical question….. because
I know we are!!!
The annual Christmas party was a huge success!
I am so thrilled 100% of everyone that said they were
TENNIS
By Jasson Durhan
H
appy New Year to everyone!! I personally have
been reflecting on this past year and all that has
transpired. I’m thankful for the many new experiences
I’ve endured this past year at the Lodge and outside
the Lodge, the new friends I’ve made, the old friends
that I’ve kept, my health, and family. I’m truly blessed.
I have had the honor and the challenge of organizing
the 2015 New Year’s party. Although, you cannot
possibly please everyone I am hoping that everyone
that attended had a fantastic time and enjoyed the
many new innovative surprises that were in store. It
took much creativity and ingenuity to make this a
memorable party. I cannot take all the credit, my wife
was very instrumental in the planning and executing of
design. She, herself made and designed the large
decorative piece of art you saw at the entrance of the
terrace room. Talking about knocking your socks off!
This set the tone for the party.
Ok, onto Tennis! Our 2014 USTA season came
to an end the second week of Dec. due to many
rained out games. Although we really need the rain
here in Calif. it put a little damper on tennis with many
matches needing to be rescheduled, but we persevered.
I wish I could say both teams went out with a bang,
but we are still a new team compared to the others
and we are still getting organized and learning as we
go, which will only make us stronger. Yes, much
optimism here because I know the group of guys we
have on our teams and they give it their best. We
finished as follows: the 7.5 team (4-8) and the 6.5
team (3-7). The last match was played at Golden
Gateway Dec. 13th with a victory for Captain (Kevin)
and the Co-captain (Jasson) whom both got bumped
up to 3.5 for next season. Great job and nice
12
going to show, did so!!! Wives included, with the
exception of my wife whom fell terribly ill and is still on
the road to recovery. She sends her love to all those
concerned and asking about her recovery. The party
was full of fun, food, music, and party games that
seemed to be a huge and successful surprise. Gift
baskets were raffled off and prizes for winners of the
games and competitions were handed out. I especially
enjoyed watching
competitors
unwrapping candy
kisses with socks on
their hands. How
you guys did it with
straight faces baffles
me as I was in
hysterics watching.
Talking
about
keeping your eye on
the prize. Kevin’s
team beat Stuart’s
team in the candy
kiss unwrap off.
The winner of
guessing how many ornaments were on the Elks Lodge
Christmas tree was Chris Ekhard. Next year will hold
even more fun and festivities for everyone since you
all keep telling me how much fun the party was. Can’t
wait.
IR (injury Reserve list): Dennis Sullivan is out
with a toe injury. I think he’s trying to get the name of
Ed’s doctor so he too can have a titanium toe. Pete
Mirosnkoff still hanging out on the IR list, although I’ve
seen him hitting some balls out on the courts. Glad to
see you out there Pete. Looking forward to your full
recovery and permanent spot on the courts.
