Ustad Bismillah Khan (1916-2006) • Shehnai • At the age of six, Bismillah
Khan became a disciple of his uncle, a shehnai player attached to Varanasi’s
Vishwanath Temple. It was the start of a musical journey that would make
Bismillah Khan one of the most respected classical musicians of his time. It
would also reposition the shehnai from an instrument played mainly at social
occasions, to a classical instrument that reached “the realms of high art and
raga”, could command the concert stage and touch a global audience. He was
invited to perform at Delhi’s Red Fort on the eve of India’s Independence—a
tradition that continued every year until his death. He was awarded the country’s
highest civilian honour, the Bharat Ratna.
The Many Worlds of Brigade Group
We first entered the real estate sector in 1986, with an ownership
office building in Bengaluru. The 14-storey Brigade Towers was then
the tallest building constructed by a private developer in Bengaluru.
It became such an established landmark that many people believed
Brigade Road took its name from Brigade Towers, instead of the
other way round.

are managed by a team of ‘Brigadiers’—currently numbering over
1500—and a national and international network of professional
associates across domains, services and specialisations. We work
in a state-of-the-art environment supported by ERP, follow best
practices of HR management and employ modern construction
technology.

In 2003, we set up a not-for-profit trust, Brigade Foundation, through
which we could work in the broad areas of education, health and
community development. We have also put into motion a series

T. Chowdaiah (1895 -1967) • Violin • His life and career were the stuff of
folklore. Acclaimed in the mainstream concert circuit of South India, he
accompanied some of the great vocalists of Karnatak classical music. He also
gave solo performances that commanded the concert stage and audiences.
Chowdaiah modified the original four-string violin into a seven-string instrument
that brought out the subtleties of all seven notes and amplified the violin’s sound.
He was honoured with numerous awards and titles—one being the Madras Music
Academy’s Sangita Kalanidhi award, considered one of the highest recognitions
in Karnatak music. An iconic violin-shaped auditorium—Chowdaiah Memorial
Hall, near Sankey Road—pays tribute to his memory. Yet this individualistic spirit
cared little for the trappings of titles, power and position.

Palghat Mani Iyer (1912-1981) • Mridangam • As The Hindu wrote in a tribute
to the icon, “It was his skillful use of sound and silence that gave the concert
a sustained and rapturous beauty. It was his brilliant percussive phrasing that
raised the impact of the compositions to a level hitherto unheard of”. Palghat
Mani Iyer elevated the position of the mridangam vidwan from a musician who
supported the main artiste, much like a human metronome, to an artiste who
actively played along with the lead performer. To quote another acclaimed
percussionist, Karaikudi Mani, “He brought gauravam (dignity) to the profession”.
He also introduced innovations in the structure and size of the mridangam, to
produce different pitches. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan.

Govindrao Tembe (1881-1955) • Harmonium • Govindrao Tembe was a
polymath: music composer, stage actor, writer and perhaps the most renowned
harmonium player of all time. Largely self-taught, Tembe’s career as a harmonium
player began on the Marathi stage, with Marathi stage songs. Under the
influence of artistes like Bhaskarbuwa Bakhale and Alladiya Khan, his mastery of
the harmonium and the structural integrity of his playing acquired sophistication
and brilliance, earning him legendary status and the credit for bringing his
instrument ‘from the side of the stage to its centre’. He accompanied the great
vocalists and instrumentalists of his day, reflecting and reproducing their ‘every
nuance and improvisation’ on his harmonium.

T. R. Mahalingam (1926-1986) • Flute • Tiruvidaimarudur Ramaswamy
Mahalingam, affectionately known as Mali, was an inspired musician, known
for his formidable breath control and brilliant fingering. Mali pioneered several
musical transitions: he introduced the gamaka style of flute playing, in which the
flute replicates the graceful, fluid and continuous notes of the human voice, and
redesigned the flute, bringing in an eighth hole to produce richer tones. He earned
the reputation of being an eccentric genius, since he played only when he was
inspired, disregarding such niceties as punctuality and programme duration at
his concerts. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, which, in typical Mali style,
he declined.

Ustad Zia Mohinuddin Dagar (1929-1990) • Rudraveena • Zia Mohinuddin
Dagar belonged to the 19th generation of Dagar family dhrupad musicians.
He played the measured and meditative Dhrupad style of music—the oldest
surviving form of Hindustani classical music—on the rudraveena. His style,
appealing to highly cultivated tastes, elevated the rudraveena, till then used as a
practice instrument by vocalists, into a full-fledged concert instrument. In 1982,
he established a Gurukul, in the time-honoured Dagar tradition, at Palaspa, near
Mumbai. He was also associated with several prestigious universities and music
conservatories abroad. He was awarded the Kalidas Samman, one of India’s most
prestigious awards, by the Madhya Pradesh government.

Veenai Dhanammal (1867-1938) • Veena • Her style, reflecting the grandeur of
the padams, became known as the Veenai Dhanammal bani. She set the benchmark
for capturing the best in the Karnatak classical music tradition and creating
sublime levels of music experience that reflected the ‘unhurried and cultured
leisure’ of her day. Her legacy to Indian classical music and arts include progeny
who became accomplished artistes. Amongst these was her granddaughter, the
legendary Bala Saraswati, arguably the greatest Bharatanatyam dancer of all
time. It is said that in her dying moments, her fingers searched for the strings
of her veena, which was placed at her bedside. Her last words were “Muvva
Gopala”, the signature of Kshetragna whose padams she had revered and made
famous.

Ustad Ali Akbar Khan (1922-2009) • Sarod • He was taught by his father, the
renowned musician Allauddin Khan, who was also teacher to Ravi Shankar. And
as Ravi Shankar did to the sitar, Ali Akbar Khan shone the international spotlight
on his instrument, the sarod. He travelled extensively in India and the west,
performing solo and in acclaimed classic jugalbandi pairings, most memorably

with Ravi Shankar and Nikhil Banerjee. In a mission to spread knowledge of
Indian classical music, he set up schools in Calcutta, California and Switzerland.
He received many prestigious awards, among which were the Padma Vibhushan,
a MacArthur Fellowship, and a National Heritage Fellowship. He also received
five Grammy nominations.

U. Srinivas (1969-2014) • Mandolin • While playing a typically western
instrument like the mandolin, Uppalapu Srinivas was one of the all-time greats
in the Karnatak classical music tradition. He was the first musician to use the
electric mandolin in Karnatak music, modifying its traditional four doubled strings
to five single strings, to suit the pitch, raga system, and especially gamakas
B r i g a d e G r o u p ’ s C a l e n d a r 2 015
(nuanced oscillations) of Karnatak music. Srinivas was also a respected presence
in the world music genre, having recorded and played with jazz and rock greats
like John McLaughlin (George Harrison of The Beatles is said to have exclaimed,
“Eddie van Halen, eat your heart out,” when he first heard Srinivas). The mandolin
maestro died at the young age of 45.

India’s First Interactive Music Museum
experiences that engage, educate and entertain, this museum will
enable people to rediscover their connections to the living tradition that is
Indian music.
The IME building was completed and inaugurated in 2013. The museum
is being designed by one of America’s leading professional designs firms,
Gallagher & Associates, who worked with the Recording Academy to
create the Grammy Museum.
The best experts and expertise, from India and abroad, are coming
together to make the Indian Music Experience a reality in 2015.

The Centre for Indian Music Experience, or IME, will be a new
landmark in Bengaluru’s cultural landscape. This vibrant music epicenter
has been envisioned and designed to advance the understanding and
appreciation of various genres of Indian music, from the traditional to the
contemporary. The museum will include multi-media galleries featuring
photographs, instrument installations, audio-visuals, and interactive
experiential areas; an outdoor park, with installations made of natural
materials; and a Learning Centre, with classrooms, a seminar hall and
a library. The Learning Centre will conduct regular music lessons, as
well as seminars, workshops and music appreciation courses. Through
