GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter GOLD WING ROAD RIDERS ASSOCIATION CHAPTER NH-G Page 1 THE LAKES REGION WINGS February 2015 Our 27th Year From the Chapter Director We’re one month closer to taking our bikes back out of winter hibernation. As I sit at my computer writing this article, we are right smack in the middle of the Blizzard of January 2015. There was no one on the roads on my way into work, and the phone isn’t ringing here at the dealership. We had a good turn-out for the January Gathering at my house on January 10th. There was lots of good food provided by Chapter G members and we went over the first draft of the Chapter G 2015 Ride Schedule. I must say, that I had a little competition for the attention of the attendees as the TV was on with the Patriots playoff game. Finally though, the Pats won and we were back to normal. Also welcomed at the January Gathering were new members Howard and Debbie Towne, from Alton Bay, NH. We look forward to having them on upcoming rides this summer. The February Chapter Gathering will be on February 14th at Bob and Beryl Reids house in Alexandria starting at 6 PM. Look for the directions to their house later on in this newsletter. The 23rd of January had myself and Bob and Beryl Reid heading down to Chapter NH-A’s Gathering down in Manchester. We had a good time and saw an excellent video which Bob will be showing at our February Gathering. On the 24th of January, Chapter G held its Bowling Night at Fun Spot in Laconia. We had a terrific turn-out considering that it was snowing outside. Dave Bolster and Glen and Laura Daniels came up from Chapter NH-A to bowl with us. They started out bowling 10 pin and then switched over to Candlepin. Dave mentioned that the candlepin balls felt very light after bowling with the big 10 pin balls. From Chapter G there was myself , John and Carole Sheehan, Bob and Kathy Bielawa, Bob and Kaye Hamel, Vic and Carol Cloutier, Lee and Meri Hirtle, Bob and Beryl Reid, and last but not least Sue Venne. It was great to see Sue and catch up on what she has been doing. On the 25th, Bob and Beryl Reid and I headed down to Rindge to Chapter NH-E’s Gathering at the J.P. Stephens Restaurant. We had a great time and were able to sell some of Chapter NH-G’s Spring Raffle tickets. While there, we had enough members to steal the NH/VT Flag so it is now in Chapter NH-G’s possession. Needless to say, we had a very busy weekend. Our next Chapter visitation will be on March 7th to Rutland, Vermont to visit Chapter VT-A. Check out the 2015 Chapter NH-G Ride Schedule listed in this newsletter. It is shaping up nicely. We will be discussing the Chapter Ride Schedule at the February Gathering, and we are looking to set up an overnight ride in July or August, so come to the Gathering with your ideas so we can book the Motel rooms. We are also going to add some summer evening dine-out rides. We’ll need ideas for that too. Don’t forget Chapter NH-G members that the NH District is hosting a CPR/First-Aid class on February 28th at Banks Chevrolet in Concord. The cost is $25.00 and there is only room for 18 participants. Send your check to GWRRA NH District, care of Madalyn Sprague, 8 Bassy Street, Lebanon, N.H. 03766-1435 to reserve your spot. You do not need bring lunch if you don’t want to. Banks has a Cafe’ on site. This event is first come, first served. See you on the 14th at Bob & Beryl Reid’s. Mike Vaillancourt Chapter G Director Nobody has more Fun than “G”! The January 2015 Chapter NH-G Gathering was held on January 10th, at Mike Vaillancourt’s home in Canterbury. There were 16 attendees and it was a potluck event. Mike Vaillancourt Chapter G Director There was plenty of food and those in attendance looked over the items that were donated to the Chapter by Sue Venne. Many of the items sold that evening. The Patriots playoff game was shown in lieu of motorcycle videos and was watched intently by everyone. It was brought up that there was interest in having Dine-Outs on a week night during the riding season. Ideas are supposed to be brought to the February Gathering for consideration. Finally, there was discussion about the Chapter G spring raffle and when the tickets would be available. GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 9 Welcome to GWRRA Rider Education Cabin Fever I don’t know about all of you but cabin fever is starting to set in for me. There’s not a lot of natural snow for skiing or snowmobiling to keep my mind and body sharp so I am setting here thinking of rides that my wife and I or our chapter took this past season. Rides I’d like to take again or rides I did not take but still want to. But for me just thinking about it doesn’t always get it done, so I am getting out a road map and planning and charting some rides we would like to go on this season, and I’ll use this sheet of rides as a check list. I won’t have an excuse for not going on these rides since I will have this list readily available when the opportunity arises, and I won’t waste a lot of time thinking where we should go. I plan on calling some of my chapter friends to make some midweek or weekend rides with them because one ride a month with the chapter just doesn’t do it for me. We bought our bike to ride so I am going to. Are you with me? Last month we talked about staying sharp during the off season. I want to talk about staying sharp on your bike for a moment. My wife and I took an ARC course last year and I am looking forward to doing another one this spring. What better way to start the season but with slow, twisty turns and stop and go stuff in a parking lot. The course was excellent. A lot of good information and enough time to practice handling your bike at slow speeds. Just because you’ve taken one of these courses before doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take it again. You may not run into this stuff very often so if you are not doing it regularly in practice you may not be able to handle an actual situation. Our instructor for that course said he actually practices a drill of this stuff regularly in his driveway or wherever the room is available to keep sharp. There is some planning happening to actually put the course on in New Hampshire. We went to Massachusetts to take ours. Please let me know if you are interested in taking one of these courses and we can get it set up if there is enough interest. As I am writing this we are finally getting some snow so that maybe the rest of the winter will not drag by and the riding season will be here before we know it. At our last gathering we put together a pretty good list of rides both for our Sunday gatherings and some mid month jaunts too. If anyone has some more ideas, please bring them to the February 14th gathering at our house so we can get them finalized and posted so that other chapters can plan to join us. We’ll see you then. GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 10 Guest GWRRA Rider Education “LCD” by Ace (Howie) Peterson Guest Educator CO-Q Perhaps you all know that LCD is short for Lowest Common Denominator, a factor usually found in math problems; at least during my day, don’t know how it works in Modern Math! I figured a math problem might help us get into the spirit of this article, or not. Here goes! As I was going to St. Ives, I met a man with seven wives; every wife had seven sacks, and in each sack were seven cats. Every cat had seven kits, and every cat had seven lives. How many were going to St. Ives? Perhaps Occam’s razor, which generally asserts that “the hypothesis that includes the fewest assumptions is the more likely one to be true”, would help on this problem. Given all that let us consider some of the possible answers within motorcycle encounters with either moving or immovable objects. Of course the size of the object may have something to do with any decision to be made, but even small objects forcefully encountered can hurt. For example, and perhaps I am not the only one with this experience; while riding a highway at the posted speed of 60 mph, I encountered a Hornet head on so to speak right in my face shield! The Hornet bounced down into my riding jacket, and then under my shirt. The LCD was to get the motorcycle stopped, undress the top part of my clothing and get rid of said Hornet who is now doing laps around my body! Modesty was not an option! However, no harm, no foul as “they” say! But I digress! For example, a vehicle makes a sudden stop in front of a rider on a busy street. Let us presume that there are two lanes going each way for this one. The mind being the busy computer it is, has many bytes of data going all directions at once, and when the eyes send the oncoming encounter data, the mind has to process this data as well, which it does very competently. Except in the usual outcome(s), too much data may be processing, and so the immediate reaction is to use the LCD to avoid hitting the object just ahead. Now there are at least four methods to escape the encounter; slow and brake, brake hard, swerve right or swerve left. Using the LCD, the majority of the riders instantly brake hard, and as hard as possible. This is indeed the simplest assumption, but is it the “true” or best assumption to make? I realize there are a few other intangibles within the problem, but wish to let the reader sort all these out within the problem stated. Another example involves a rider noticing a vehicle is about to make left turn in front of his/her direction of travel. Again, mind over matter as in example one! Again, there are several options available to the rider; stop, slow while braking, swerve right, and/or accelerate plus none of the “above”. Which of these is the LCD? The reader may indicate that “it depends” and that could be correct. The lesson herein is to identify which LCD is “true” or the correct answer to the problem at hand. One more for grins and giggles! The rider enters a curve on some particular highway. After entering the curve the rider notices that he/she is traveling too fast to complete the turn at the speed being traveled. The mind, wonderful tool it is, has to process a host of data to provide the best solution, most likely also having to disengage from a lot of other extraneous information interfering with the solution needed. Once again, there are several possible solutions that could become the riders LCD such as; braking hard, rolling off the throttle, attempting to severely straighten the motorcycle, fixate, trail brake, turn head further, and press harder, to name a few. Which one or more of these become the LCD? In this article I am not going to address which answer of any example is the correct or “true” solution. Rather I am instead pointing to the possibilities that our minds go Nobody has more Fun than “G”! GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter through to resolve situations we encounter. I leave it to the reader to address all the solutions, and then decide which are “false” and which are “true”. The correct answer(s) involve those solutions we have been taught in motorcycle courses, as well as experience gained through practice of the techniques learned. Understand as well, that in most instances, the seemingly immediate reaction, LCD, can be incorrect. The solution most often used by motorcyclists is to “grab” all the front brake that can be applied, and hope for the best result! Rarely is this reaction the best Lowest Common Denominator! This is also where the mental gymnastics of “what if” may help out, even sitting on the couch. Playing scenarios mentally may help to store LCD solutions ahead of time to use when and if needed. Another is the “instant replay” or “further review” as used in the NFL. After a ride or at a stop during the ride mentally go over any miscues that may have occurred, thus again storing into the memory solution bank what to do next time if needed. Realize that contrary to some discussions, and even rider safety articles, there are indeed many “truths”, however, there are also a lot of “it depends”. Each situation/scenario is different with many different factors entering into the LCD equation and thus may change what one expected the “truth to be”. There are no “canned” solutions! As the riding season draws closer, it is time to start the mental exercises to condition our brains towards those physical exercises that make our motorcycling as safe as is possible. AND AS ALWAYS, RIDE WITH PRIDE AND CONFIDENCE! By the way, the answer to the puzzle at the beginning is “1”. GWRRA Chapter NH-G The Lakes Region Wings Newsletter Page 12 Until the Chapter gets a Motorist Awareness Coordinator, Nick Hoppner from the Colorado District, will graciously provide us with MAD articles. Editor Your “perfectly good” wiper blades may not be good enough for winter driving by Nick Hoppner Colorado (West) Motorist Awareness Coordinator [email protected] 970-964-4379 970-964-4379 Motorists, how often do manufacturers recommend you replace your windshield wiper blades? Obviously, windshield wiper blades in good condition are vital to good vision when driving, and most of a driver’s information when driving is visual. If your windshield wipers are not working properly, it can become difficult to see, which can increase the chances of having an accident. But the condition of your wiper blades is often forgotten month after month. They’re like the old joke about the guy who had a hole in the roof of his house. His wife nagged at him to fix it, but he pointed out how unpleasant it would be to fix the hole on a rainy day, and when it wasn’t raining, there was no need to fix it! How often you use your wipers often is dependent on the climate you live in. If you live and drive in Seattle, you probably use your wipers every day or so. But for those of us who live in the high deserts and mountains of Colorado, we can go weeks without using our wipers. Nevertheless, we also have conditions that can eat up a pair of wiper blades faster than those who live in other micro-climates. Our cold, snowy winters mean our wiper blades encounter ice granules, harsh de-icing chemicals, hot car wash chemicals, and lots of sand and gravel. Then too, those of us who live in areas that get lots of snow and rain use our windshield wipers more, so they wear out faster. And, when winter is done, we have months of hot sun and low humidity to suck the moisture out of wiper blades. So, how often should we replace our wiper blades? Wiper blade manufacturers, who depend on sales to stay in business, recommend replacement every six months. Other so-called experts recommend replacement every year— preferably in the fall. The most logical time to replace wiper blades is whenever your personal inspection and experience tells you that they need to be replaced. As you drive in rain or snow, do you and your front seat passenger have to squint around streaks or gaps? Does a visual inspection reveal small tears or ragged edges on the blades? Time to buy some refills and replace the old rubber. Or if your inspection reveals bent metal wiper blades, for goodness sakes, replace the whole blades! Wiper blades and refills aren’t very costly. You should check them every couple of months to make sure they are still in good working order. Sure, replacing your wipers seem like a nuisance. But they are a small maintenance chore worth doing that can help avoid a nasty accident. Think about it for yourself and spread the news to your friends and neighbors. Nobody has more Fun than “G”! The third option is to drive to Portland, Maine and take the Nova Star overnight ferry to Yarmouth, and then follow the roads for approximately 2.5 hours to the Rally Anyway, that you decide to come you will be driving through beautiful scenery that is Atlantic Canada. Once again, I extend our invitation to you to make the trip and share this wonderful event with us and let us provide you with a real Canadian Welcome. If you have questions on anything about the rally, hotels, the roads, the ferries or just want to talk, please feel free to call me at any time at 1-902-834-2179 if I am not available please leave a message and I will return your call.
