COLLECT
Almighty and ever-living God, clothed in majesty, whose beloved Son was this day
presented in the Temple, in substance of our flesh: grant that we may be presented to you
with pure and clean hearts, by your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with
you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Lord Jesus Christ, light of the nations and glory of Israel: make your home among us, and
present us pure and holy to your heavenly Father, your God, and our God.
FIRST READING Malachi 3.1–5
Thus says the LORD God: See, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me,
and the Lord whom you seek will suddenly come to his temple. The messenger of the
covenant in whom you delight – indeed, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts. But who can
endure the day of his coming, and who can stand when he appears? For he is like a refiner’s
fire and like fullers’ soap; he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the
descendants of Levi and refine them like gold and silver, until they present offerings to the
LORD in righteousness. Then the offering of Judah and Jerusalem will be pleasing to the
LORD as in the days of old and as in former years. Then I will draw near to you for
judgement; I will be swift to bear witness against the sorcerers, against the adulterers,
against those who swear falsely, against those who oppress the hired workers in their
wages, the widow, and the orphan, against those who thrust aside the alien, and do not fear
me, says the LORD of hosts.
SECOND READING Hebrews 2.14–18
Since the children share flesh and blood, Jesus himself likewise shared the same things, so
that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil,
and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by the fear of death. For it is clear that
he did not come to help angels, but the descendants of Abraham. Therefore he had to
become like his brothers and sisters in every respect, so that he might be a merciful and
faithful high priest in the service of God, to make a sacrifice of atonement for the sins of the
people. Because he himself was tested by what he suffered, he is able to help those who
are being tested.

GOSPEL Luke 2.22–40
When the time came for their purification according to the law of Moses, Mary and Joseph
brought Jesus up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord. (as it is written in the law of the
Lord, ‘Every firstborn male shall be designated as holy to the Lord’), and they offered a
sacrifice according to what is stated in the law of the Lord, ‘a pair of turtle-doves or two
young pigeons.’ Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was
righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit
rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death
before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple;
and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under
the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are
dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your
salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for revelation to
the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’ And the child’s father and mother were
amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his
mother Mary, ‘This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be
a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed – and a
sword will pierce your own soul too.’ There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of
Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband seven
years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the
temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she
came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the
redemption of Jerusalem. When they had finished everything required by the law of the
Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their own town of Nazareth. The child grew and became
strong, filled with wisdom; and the favour of God was upon him.
POST COMMUNION
Lord, you fulfilled the hope of Simeon and Anna, who lived to welcome the Messiah: may
we, who have received these gifts beyond words, prepare to meet Christ Jesus when he
comes to bring us to eternal life; for he is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

Shaun and Dennis will be leading the course for young people and Linda and Becky the one
for adults. The confirmation service will be at 6.30pm on Sunday 17 May at St Mary’s,
Redbourn. Please let the clergy or parish office know if you are interested and sign up on

3 NIGHT BREAK IN EDINBURGH OR DINNER FOR TWO IN THE WERNHER RESTAURANT,
LUTON HOO!? Just two of the many exciting prizes to win in the St Mary's Church Wedding
Dress Experience raffle. Draw will take place 16 February,on the last day of the Wedding
Dress Experience being held at the church (14 - 16 February). Tickets cost only £1 each (£5
for a book of 5) and go on sale from the end of January. If you would like the opportunity to
win one of these prizes, please come to the event and purchase tickets there. If you are
unable to come or would like to purchase tickets in advance, please contact Julia Lloyd via
the Parish Office.
RENEWAL OF WEDDING VOWS: An important part of the Wedding Dress Experience is the
joint renewal of wedding vows at 5.30pm on Sunday 15 February, for everyone who would
like avail themselves of this opportunity. Please let Revd Becky Leach know by emailing

PHOTOGRAPHS OF ALL SAINTS CHURCH (PAST AND PRESENT) WANTED! Please give any
pictures you might have, especially of people and events, to Ellen Hills, via the Parish Office,
by 1 June so that she can compile a display as part of the All Saints Golden Jubilee
Celebrations.
PARISH LENT GROUPS will begin the week of 16 February. Please sign up for these parish
groups now (by 8 February at the latest) by filling out the form at the back of church. . If you
would be willing to host or lead a group, please do indicate. There will be a choice of two
courses, one based on Stephen Cotterill’s book ’The Things He Carried - A Journey to the
Cross’ and the other based on the film ’Chocolat’. You will be informed of your group in the
week commencing 9 February.
FOR THE CELEBRATION OF ALL SAINTS JUBILEE YEAR members of the parish are invited to
make a donation: 50 for 50, such as 50 pennies or 50 £1 coins. or even 50 £50 notes. Please
put any donation in an envelope marked ‘All Saints Jubilee’. If you wish to gift aid please
indicate this and give your name and address.
BRITISH HUMANITARIAN AID: There will be a collection for BHA during the weekend of
21/22 February. Donated goods can be left in the Cunningham Room at the Church Hall
between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 21st. Money donations can be made after each service
on the 22nd. The donated goods will be collected by BHA during the Sunday morning. For
further information please contact either Anne Harper or Margaret Hewitt via the Parish
Office. Thank you for your continued support.
SUPPER CLUB meets on Monday 9 February. The speaker will be Sue Mutter, talking about
Gypsy, Roma and Traveller People. To help with catering please will members let Brenda
Elliott know by Friday if they will not be attending.
CAN YOU HELP WITH THE EASTER EXPERIENCE? It is St Nicholas’ turn to run the Easter
Experience, an event which gives school children and the public a life size encounter with the
Easter story-a great outreach opportunity. We need someone willing to organise a group of
people from the parish to run this 23-27/28 March. There are resources in the parish
already. Please contact the Rector if you or a couple persons might be willing to organise
this.

Crib set. If by chance you have come across this little 'doll' (or have a

CHILDREN’S SOCIETY COLLECTION BOXES can be returned to the hall TODAY
after the 9.30am service for counting. If you have never had one before, we
should be delighted if you’d like to take one away today, in which to collect your
loose change, all of which adds up to help the work of the charity.

would like to come to church but need a lift. If you are able to offer an
occasional lift and go on a rota (we are not asking for regular commitments),

50 FOR 50: Launched on 11 January to raise funds for our Golden Jubilee events
and projects. We suggested donations in multiples of 50 – from 1p pieces to £50
notes! Whatever you are able to give will help the fund. Envelopes to fill are
available at the back of the church – or a Smarties tube for school age people.
(We recommend eating the Smarties before trying to get the money in.)

GOLDEN JUBILEE EVENTS-the first of the year’s special events is a walk (kinda
'Beating the Bounds') around the District boundary on 2 May starting at 10am
and ending with a ‘bring your own’ picnic lunch at All Saints church. All are very
welcome to join all or part of the walk. The aim is to pass as many homes of
members of our fellowship as possible. To help with planning, please can you let
Linda or the Wardens know if the walk may stop at your home for prayer/
possible comfort break please.
