We conducted the carnival with a different format and it seemed to work well. It met the criteria of a) reducing the time the students were exposed to the heat of the day even though we had shade provided b) having the students more engaged in the shorter format c) manageability of the program and the day. This information will be used to select our school teams for the District and Zone 6 carnivals coming up in the near future. Special thanks to Mrs Creese and Mrs Hogan who were instrumental in the organisation process. By all accounts the day was a great success and the swimmers were kept active through the strategic timetabling of 2 carnivals – ingenious thinking! The planning for the day took many hours and we thank Mrs Hogan and the other members of staff for their support and assistance. Congratulations to all students for participating with a ‘personal best’ attitude. What’s On Wednesday, February 11 -Yr3 Information Night -Yr4 Information Night Friday, February 13 -School Fee Direct Debit forms due As I become familiar with school routines and procedures I can see that our school community is a harmonious place because of the effort of everyone. I would particularly like to thank all the parents and carers who park and walk in, and who are helping keep all our kids safe by picking up their children in the designated space outside the hall in the afternoon. For your information, the Year P-3 classes are walked to the hall by their class teacher, the Year 4-6 students are asked to act responsibly and make their way to the Look Out or the Hall for pick-up. When in the hall, all students sit near the stage facing the footpath awaiting your arrival. Last week I offered the students an opportunity to be designers and creators by imagining and drawing an outdoor classroom. I already have several designs, and look forward to more innovative and creative students bringing in their designs. The parameters are:  There will be a concrete pad for the floor.  There will be a roof constructed.  The colours and furnishings are open to interpretation of what makes a 21st Century Learning Space.  I have nominally given a 6x4m floor space as a guide. Please encourage your children to have a go at this challenge! I would like to share with you a little about some of the ‘Brain Rules’ from the book by Dr John Medina, as they are rules that can help our children, and ourselves, thrive as learners. Brain Rule 2: Exercise boosts brain power.  Our brains were built for walking (a long way each day!)  If you want to improve your thinking skills – MOVE!  Exercise gets blood to the brain, blood brings glucose for energy and oxygen to soak up the toxic electrons that are left over.  Exercise stimulates the proteins that keeps neurons connecting.  Aerobic activity just twice per week halves your risk of general dementia, and cuts the risk of Alzheimer’s by 60%! Basketball Trials (11yr and 12 yr) This Thursday at break times I will be holding trials for those students who play competitive Basketball and would like to try out for selection to go to the District Trials. District Swimming Championships After our Swimming Carnival we will be going through the times to see who qualifies to compete at the District Championships next Wednesday 18th February. These students will be notified. Sporting Interests and Talents I would like to provide opportunities for students to compete at district and higher levels and would like to identify students at St Benedict’s who play competitive sport or have a special talent and may be eligible to be nominated by our School for Pine Rivers District Trials throughout 2015. These trials are usually for the older students in the school (2003 and 2004 born) and I will be checking this information at the district meeting today. I will be sending a form home this week to gather some information regarding this. Wow Factor: Ashley Cavanagh (2R) has been doing exceptionally well at Athletics, winning medals and breaking State records at Little Athletics Championships. Term 1: February 11, 2015 APRE Brett Kitchener Dear Parents, Yesterday February 10th, the Church celebrated the feast day of St Scholastica, the twin sister of St Benedict. Below is some information about St Scholastica for your interest. St Scholastica (c. 480 – 10 February 542) St. Scholastica was born in Italy, the twin sister of Benedict of Nursia. The most commonly told story about her is that she would, once a year, go and visit her brother at a place near his abbey, and they would spend the day worshiping together and discussing sacred texts and issues. She also is the founder of the women’s branch of Benedictine Monasticism. One day they had supper and continued their conversation. When Benedict indicated it was time for him to leave, she protested, and begged him to stay with her for the evening so they could continue their discussions. He refused, insisting that he needed to return. At that point, Scholastica closed her hands in prayer, and after a moment, a wild storm started outside of the guest house in which they were housed. Benedict asked, “What have you done?” to which she replied, “I asked you and you would not listen; so I asked my God and he did listen. So now go off, if you can, leave me and return to your monastery.” Benedict was unable to return to his monastery, and they spent the night in discussion. According to St.Gregory’s Dialogues, three days later, from his Abbey, Benedict saw his sister’s soul leaving the earth and ascending to heaven in the form of a shining white dove. Scholastica’s memorial is 10 February. Scholastica is the patron saint of nuns. Ash Wednesday Using ashes obtained by burning palms from the previous Passion Sunday provides a wonderful life-death-life symbol of the paschal mystery to explore. The palms are a symbol of Christ our triumphant king (life); that triumph turns to ashes at the crucifixion (death); being marked with those ashes signifies our commitment to journey to the font at Easter (life). www.stbenedicts.qld.edu.au Ash Wednesday commences the season of Lent which is a time of great activity for us in the Catholic School Community. Individually we make plans for the 40 days to do more or to have less in order to relate to the ultimate sacrifice Jesus made for us all. As a whole school community we commit to Caritas Australia’s Project Compassion outreach. Ash Wednesday Mass and Liturgy All parishioners, parents and friends in our community are invited to attend either of the two events we will hold next Wednesday in the school hall.  At 8.45am Mrs Hickey and I will lead our younger children in years P-2 in a liturgy in the hall.  At 11am a Mass will be held. Library News Library Lessons This week in our library lessons, older classes were reminded of our Resource Centre Covenant. This covenant is a written promise of how we will do the ‘WALK’ in our library; the students discussed how we could show respect, act responsibly, learn together and keep safe. Resource Centre Covenant In St. Benedict’s Resource Centre we will live, love, learn and celebrate together while doing the WALK… We Respect by: Using our manners. Taking care of our books, computers & other resources. Listening to all library staff and each other. Being calm and considerate of others in the library. Act Responsibly by: Being prepared for borrowing on our library day. Being in the right place at the right time. Showing initiative in finding suitable resources. Putting the books back where they belong. Keeping our library clean and tidy. Learn Together by: Sharing and taking turns. Helping and encouraging each other. Asking questions. Listening attentively. We spoke to the younger classes about caring for library books. Before School Borrowing Each morning from 8.15-8.30 students are permitted to visit the library to return their library books and swap them for new ones. This can be helpful if they have missed their library day due to illness or appointments. It won’t be a space to come and play before school, it is simply a chance to return and borrow readers. All children need to feel that school is a safe place where people will care about them, where their needs for support, respect and friendship will be met, and where they will be able to get help to work out problems. When these needs are met children develop a sense of belonging at school. Belonging is very important for mental health. Children who feel that they belong at school are happier; more relaxed and have fewer behaviour problems than others. They also learn better, are more motivated and more successful with schoolwork. Research into children’s mental health has found that a sense of belonging at school helps to protect children against mental health problems and improves their learning. Making friends and having positive relationships with teachers helps children develop a sense of belonging at school. Having older “buddies” to turn to, helps younger children feel that school is a place where they can get help if they need it. Looking after younger children encourages caring and helping in older children and helps to reduce conflicts and bullying. These are some of the ways that children’s sense of belonging at school can be supported and developed. What parents and carers can do? Parents and carers can work with your child’s teacher to help create a bridge between home and school. It is important that adults take a positive interest in what happens at school and it helps children feel comfortable with the school environment. It also makes it easier to pick up on any problems early when they are easiest to resolve.  Find out all you can about the school routines and expectations and what your child is learning; participate in information sessions.  Make time each day to listen to your child tell you about what he or she is doing at school. Try to get them to focus on what has gone well and to identify if there have been any problems.  Let your child’s teacher know if he/she is having difficulties and discuss what kinds of things you can do at home and school to help.  Get involved with school activities as much as possible. I would also like to share with you what our major outreach initiatives will be at St. Benedict’s for 2015. Social Justice and outreach to others in need is a vital element in the Religious Life of all Catholic Schools. Outreach to others is something that occurs quite naturally within our family, friends and wider community when serious illness strikes, critical events occur and the death of loved ones happens. Our children learn firsthand what compassion is all about by watching how we respond in love. So, too, do our children learn important heart lessons when we, as community, reach out to those in need. 2015 St. Benedict’s Outreach Initiatives We strive to assist those in need in our local Brisbane area, wider community and specific communities overseas. As our school community focuses each Term on a specific area of outreach, it would be wonderful for you as a family to talk about and decide how your family will be able to support e.g. Vinnies Christmas Appeal – what item or items will our family be able to give to bring a little joy to another family who is finding life tough? Perhaps you can encourage older children to research and learn a little more about the organisation or ministry we are supporting. When children can complete a task at home to earn either money or an item to bring along, this greatly assists in their understanding and in their character development.
