Beaumont, TX No. 6 February 9, 2015 The past two Sundays during morning worship, we have read and heard spiritual advice from the small book of James. The author of the book of James was believed to have been a brother of Jesus and was a leader in the first church in Jerusalem. James wrote down some of his thoughts about living as a follower of Jesus. He passed onto readers practical ideas about a variety of issues Christians face daily. During February, we look at only three portions of the New Testament letter. The first week we heard about James’ call to not only read God’s Word but know it, internalize the Word, then put it to work in their faith. His key idea: “Be Doers of God’s Word not Hearers Only” (James 1:22) Last week we heard about the source of true spiritual wisdom. God in His grace blesses his people with wisdom when they ask for His gift. “If any of you is lacking in wisdom, ask God, who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly and it will be given you. But ask in faith never doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind…” James 1:5-6 (NLT) This Sunday we turn our attention to the Power of Words. We will read and hear James 3:1-2 and 3:3-12. Our speech has great potential for good as well as harm. Jesus calls on His followers to use their words in ways that build other people up according to their needs. (Eph. 4:29) Learning to use words wisely is a process that is the result of growing in the Grace and Wisdom of our Lord Jesus Christ. I look forward to seeing you for worship this Sunday. Outside Ourselves February is the Disciples' month that includes the "Week of Compassion". This is a time when all Disciples everywhere join together to help those in need. This is an outreach time when our church joins with the Disciples of Christ and gives to needy causes, such as fire, flood, hunger, and storm. May you remember that people from our own congregation were assisted after the hurricanes of Rita and Ike. Now it is our turn to give to the "Week of Compassion" during the last two weeks of February. I know to expect a wonderful gift from this generous church. Envelopes will be made available February 15 and 22nd. Please look for them. God bless you.
