Dear Sister and Brothers in the Lord,
As we celebrate the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph may we remember to pray for all our
dear ones both living and deceased. We, as Catholics, are so fortunate to remember and celebrate
the importance of the family to God’s plan for our Salvation. We can only imagine what life in the
home of Mary and Joseph was like, but for sure by our practice of love, patience, willingness to
forgive and self-sacrifice we can emulate that goodness in our own circle of family and
friends. Please pray for all the wonderful families of SSPJ that the grace of God will keep them
from all spiritual harm. We recall the saying of that wonderful apostle of the family rosary Father
Peyton: “The family that prays together, stays together.” We pray also for all wounded families as
a result of death, accidents, illness, divorce, addictions which are all challenges to family life. May
troubled families turn to God for strength and courage. Congratulations to all our great families
and thanks be to God for their incredible goodness, especially in the world so affected by selfishness
and sin.
I would like to offer my thanks to all who made a special sacrifice for the Christmas collection. It is
greatly appreciated by all who benefit from the efforts of SSPJ to make Christ better known, loved
and served. I also want to offer my heartfelt thanks to those who gave so generously of their time
and talent to make our church environment beautiful and our Christmas Season Liturgies joyful
celebrations. Also, thank you to those who made a special sacrifice for the Christmas flower
collection. The generosity and efforts of so many helped to fill our senses, minds and heart with
awe, gratitude and praise.
Prayerful Best Wishes from all our parish staff to you and your loved ones for a holy, healthy and
prosperous New Year! May the coming of the Magi find us also embarking on a journey of drawing
closer to Christ in the year ahead.
+Cherishing our Past + Improving our Present + Preparing our Future!”
Thank you and may God reward you all who have pledged so generously to make our new façade
and narthex a founded hope. Thank you also for those who although unable to make a pledge have
remembered our campaign in their prayers. I want to especially thank Mr. Michael McCafferty,
Business Manager, and Mrs. Barbara Doyle, Parish Secretary, both of whom worked so diligently
for the launching of our SSPJ Campaign. Pledge cards are available in the vestibule and at the
Rectory. They may be returned to the Rectory or by way of the Sunday collections.+jcd

SSPJ School News
7th Graders Create Explorer Games
5th Graders Appreciate their
Freedom to Express their Faith
SSPJ School recently celebrated spirit day in which
students dressed in their favorite spirit wear and
raised money through a dance party in the gym.
There was also a door decorating contest. The
winners of the door decorating contest were one of
the 5th grade classrooms, whose theme was “Our
favorite SSPJ things.” The students each wrote on a
Christmas tree ornament what their favorite things
were, such as:
“Going to Mass because we get the freedom to pray
and come closer to God.” Grace
“Since we are a Catholic school we are allowed to
talk about Jesus and God in our religion classes!”
Madeline
“Our well-known Catholic belief in God and our
faith and honor for our saints.” Andrew
“I like all of the hard-working staff, faculty, and
sisters. Go panthers!” Tommy
The students worked in pairs to research a particular
explorer and his claim to fame, biographical data,
background, mission, important facts about his
expeditions, and information on his death. The
students then incorporated this information into the
creation of a game, in which their fellow students
could play and learn more about the explorer. They
were required to creatively design the game
including the facts they researched. Below are Alex
(left) and Sean (right) demonstrating to Sarah how to
play their game, which was based on the privateer Sir
Francis Drake. In their game, Alex and Sean had
multiple choice questions in the different spaces. The
players would move forward as each question was
answered correctly. They also had a “bonus chest”
with additional opportunities to move forward.
Additionally, there were facts that did not require
answering, but were there to add to the players
knowledge. The students not only had fun playing
the variety of games developed, but learned a lot too.
Pictured left: Door winners top row (left to right): Nick, Cris,
Sean, Jacob, Nathan, Patrick, Kane, Jack, Tommy, Andrew,
Damek. Bottom row (left to right): Georgia, Gabrielle,
Caroline, Madeline, Kirsten, Sofia, Grace, Madalynne, Mary
Kate.
Students Raise Funds for
ALS Research
On spirit day, students were asked to donate $1 towards
ALS research. The students raised $250 and the Home
& School Association matched the gift resulting in a
$500 donation to the ALS Association in honor of our
beloved art teacher, Mrs. Denman. She is pictured left
with students clockwise from left to right: Emma,
Marah, Daniel, Jillian, Ben, Billy, and Alexandria.
SSPJ students have a lot of heart!
