Exalted Ruler’s Message
February is here. In
Ancient times Winter
was a month less time.
January and February
were added to the old
Roman calendar around
713 BC. as the last
months of the year.
They were changed to
the first two months of
the calendar year
around 450 BC. February was named after the Latin
term februum meaning Purification.
bicycle to help them be together for some of Mary’s
physical therapy needs. Steve Panelli and Gene
Condon’s thoughtful gift brought tears to many eyes
present.
The Elks were out in force to assist in the annual Hoop
Shoot at Serra High School…the winners of each age
group of that weekend will be back to compete against
all the Bay Area Lodges on the 17th …hope you were
there to root our Lodge representatives on. Thank
You, Tim Goll, Dave Wedeking, and Mike McQueen
for your efforts in this Annual event.
Comedy Night is up next! Get your tickets. Some great
raffle prizes to be won. I know the wait was worth it
for those lined up the other morning for our Lodge’s
Annual Crab Feed…over 500 tickets sold out in an
hour! And no one was turned away who showed up. It
will be another fantastic event to enjoy in February.
Thanks to Luda, Gene Condon and Mike Mercurio for
organizing and working the frenzy! Amazing.
Just a few weeks ago we celebrated the New Year at
the Lodge. Are your best intentions and resolutions in
place? As we all begin this short 28-day month in the
heart of Winter, enjoy the area we call home, the
friends we have, and the life we live. We have so
much to look forward to in 2015. Make it great.
Our year has already started out with a wonderful
New Year’s Eve event put on by Jasson and Terri
Durhan with the help of many volunteers. California
Catering continues to be amazing with their food and
service. Thank you. The following weekend was
“Panelli’s 1st Annual Crab Feed” where my personal
favorite moment was being able to surprise our
bartender Brian and his lovely wife Mary with a Tandem
Plan on attending our Super Bowl Party! The Ladies will
again provide the food to enjoy at half time. Give to
the Purple Pig and cheer on your favorite team. And
don’t forget to bring your Valentine to Dinner at the
Lodge…it will be a special February.
Fraternally yours,Daniel Kenny
SECRETARY’S CORNER
And what an opportunity to
showcase the Lodge and have
potential new members
exposed to our great facility.
February is looking to be a great month for our Lodge.
Two superb events: SF Giants World Series
Trophy hosting Monday, 2/2, from 4-6 and our
annual Crab Feed on Friday evening, 2/27.
Crab Feed: Thanks to a
handful of volunteers, lead by
event Chair Mike Mercurio, we
were sold out within an hour
(510 tickets). It should again
be the jewel crab feed in the
area with the culinary
expertise of Tim O’Hara and his crew spending a
couple of days in the kitchen preparing. This is one
of our bigger fund raisers for the Lodge.
SF Giants World Series Trophy: All three trophies
will be on view in the Lodge from 4-6 on Monday, 2/
2. We are working in conjunction with the San Mateo
and San Bruno PAL’s (Police Activity League). The
viewing is free with request for a donation and there
will be hot dogs, etc. available for purchase. All net
proceeds will be split among the 3 non-profits.

The New Year’s
party was a
tremendous
success!
The turnout was a 100%. When the guest arrived,
they checked in with Jay to pick up their table number
and immediately spotted the 8-foot clock with the star
backdrop along with the three 7-foot silhouette dancers.
It delighted me to see people taking pictures with them
all night long. The terrace room was transformed into a lounge with
couches aligning the outside perimeter of the room as well as round tables
with white table cloths, candles, and
cushioned back chairs in the center
of the room. Soft piano music played
as people arrived adding to a very
warm romantic atmosphere. Dancing
commenced at cocktail hour. I have
to say this was a first and it absolutely
elated me to see people dancing so
early in the evening. I knew this to
be a good omen for the rest of the
night.
The dining area was closed off from
the terrace room until 8 pm dinner.
When the doors were opened, they
revealed gold & black linens, chair
covers, balloons, and decorations to ring in 2015. Dinner was titillating to

SCHOLARSHIP
CORNER…
Last call for Legacy Awards Applications - ENF
Legacy Awards applications, for high school seniors
who are the children or grandchildren of dues-paying
Elks, must be submitted ONLINE by 12:00 p.m.
(noon) Central Time on Friday, January 30, 2015.

the taste buds. I personally had the filet mignon,
done to perfection, with scalloped potatoes and
vegetables. I heard from several chicken lovers, the
same. However, I never did find out who ordered the
one and only vegetarian crepe dish, but I imagine it
was wonderful as well. Dinner was followed up with a
delicate mini chocolate lava cake and a perfectly small
scoop of ice cream, very decadent. After dessert
some of us took our coffee and/or cocktail back into
the terrace (lounge) room and shortly thereafter began
dancing. A huge thank you goes out to California
Catering and their staff for making such a wonderful
meal and for all their hard work. The DJ took requests
all night long, therefore playing many genres of music
to please all age brackets. People had so much fun the
dancing just could not seem to stop at midnight. Many
people came up to me throughout the night to express
their gratitude and appreciation for a night well done.
It makes it ALL worth it!! Happy 2015 everyone!

Leave Your
Legacy
Submitted by ENF
Help the Elks family legacy
continue for years to come.
The ENF awards $4,000
Legacy Awards to 250 high
school seniors who are the
children and grandchildren of
Elks in good standing.
Through service, these
scholars can help build a stronger future. New in 201415, Legacy Awards recipients will engage in service with
the Elks to receive the following year’s scholarship funds.
This offers us endless possibilities for engaging Elks
scholars and growing our Elks family.
Look at 2014 Legacy Awards recipient Spencer Fricke.
Before heading to college, Spencer helped his sponsoring
Lodge—Manitowoc, Wis., Lodge No. 687—increase the
Lodge’s web presence so it can stay current and help
its membership grow.
“It means a lot to be able to help the Elks,” says
Spencer. “I was even happier that I could use skills I
have and apply it to a service project.”
Your Lodge’s legacy can be a stronger community by
joining Legacy Awards recipients in service. Visit
www.elks.org/enf/scholars for more information about
the Legacy service requirement and access to the
Legacy Awards scholarship applications.

D
ecember brought sadness to our RV Troops when Margaret Cassetta
was taken to a higher place by her Creator. Margaret is well-liked and
respected by all members and shall be greatly missed. Husband, Bob,
arranged a beautiful memorial at the Redwood City Elks Club on December
14th. The RVers were well represented as they occupied an entire table
together. Some things we learned about Margaret: she loved the holidays
and collected Santa Ornaments. Because she enjoyed Christmas so much,
all tables contained seasonal decorations, which included approximately
four ornaments to be taken home in her memory. Margaret shall be
greatly missed but always remembered. Let’s all lift up our prayers for
Bob and the family.
Coming Events: March 12-16, Santa Nella down Los Banos way.
April 13-17, The Vineyard at Vacaville.
For particulars, contact Bob Cassetta @ (650) 368-7356.
Till we again fellowship, ponder: “If we fill our hours with regrets of
yesterday and with the worries of tomorrow, we have no today in which
to be thankful.”
WATER CONSERVATION
Our 5th Year Drought
Personal Resolutions for 2015
The December rain did not end
California’s historic drought.
Have you made some personal commitments/resolutions for 2015?
Consider doing so as it will benefit both you/others and help make our
world an even better place.
Calif. needs much more rain. So,
we must practice water
conservation at home and here at
the Elks Lodge #1112.
1. Place your family (not your job) foremost in your care/mind.
2. Choose a beneficial phrase/word that will enliven both you and others.
3. Choose a charity or volunteer organization and give them some
personal time and a financial commitment.
But drink plenty
of water daily!
A voluntary gift of both your time and financial assistance is important
to you/others and to justice/peace in our world.

2014 National Veterans Service
Committee Annual Report
By Ed Ball, PDDGER, Chairman
Services (Homeless Veterans Rehabilitations Program)
at the Menlo Park Division.
To help keep alive the promise made by the Elks after
World War II, “So long as there are veterans, the
Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks will never forget
them”, the members of the San Mateo National
Veterans Service Committee works diligently in rain or
shine.
We gave $4,200 to GPF 2262 for the WI-FI Services
fund, which is now our major project. It was previously
called the TV fund. To date we have donated $297,450
to the fund.
We held 11 Birthday parties for the patients at the VA
Palo Alto HCS, and served the food for the PVA’s
Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving for the Spinal Cord
Injury Unit.
The committeemen are John Swan, Jim Faber, Cal
Calfas, David Marquesen, Bill Brogden, Peter Mori,
Hector Valencia, Tony Lemos, and Tom Runkel. With a
special thanks to David Marquesen, Cal Calfas, and Bill
Brogden for the use of their trucks.
To support our programs, we have recycled 16,020
pounds of CRV glass, 729 pounds of aluminum cans,
and 1,023 pounds of CRV plastic bottles for a total of
$2,445. The Committee received $1,670 in donations.
The committee needs help. Please volunteer your
services and time, about four hours a week to the
Veterans Committee.
For the veterans at the Traumatic Recovery Program
in Menlo Park, we had 11 BBQ’s and invited 38 veterans
to dinner at the Lodge on November 12th. We donated
clothes, eight robes, 74 pairs of shoes, 827 paperback
books, 55 decks of playing cards, 10 table games, 35
jigsaw puzzles, one backpack, four crossword books,
and toiletries. At the December BBQ, we gave each of
the 45 veterans a $10 worth of Canteen books for
Christmas.
Excess donated materials not used by the veterans in
the Trauma Recovery Program are given to the
veterans in the Extended Care Unit and the Domiciliary
Lodge members, you can help the committee expand
the veterans program by bringing your aluminum cans,
plastic and glass (CRV) bottles to the Lodge and
depositing them in the containers at the WEST SIDE
OF ELKS PARKING LOT.
We also need clean wearable men’s and women’s
clothing, shoes, paperback books, playing cards, jigsaw
puzzles, and table games which you can leave in the
Lodge office.
If you have any questions about the program, or what
we will accept for the veterans call Ed Ball at (650)
345-2828.
VETERANS CORNER
VETERANS PROGRAM
Department of Veterans Affairs Palo Alto Health Care System
Dear Ed:
Remember to Recycle your
newspaper, bottles and
cans here at the Lodge!
I wish to extend my personal thanks to you for the
donation of the BBQ, canteen books and clothing
valued at $2050.00 for our Veterans in the Traumatic
Recovery Program in building 352.
There are no small contributions, and our Veteran
patients appreciate your thoughtfulness. While
hospitalized, many of our patients have little contact
with family and friends, and in all cases your
remembrances make a positive difference in their
outlook and thus the outcome of their care.
The proceeds support
our
Veterans
program!
On behalf of the health care system and myself, I
thank you for caring about our nation’s Veterans.
Sincerely Yours, William J. Ball - Chief, Voluntary Service

A Message from the Building Corporation
To all of our fellow Lodge members we would like to start off by thanking you for having
us as your Building Corporation this Fraternal year. We have been busy doing our best to
provide a great and safe experience for all you here at the Lodge. From new chairs in the
dinning room to the new Bocce memorial wall out at the Bocce courts. We look forward to
continuing our updating of the pool area by purchasing a few more chairs and lounge
chairs for your summertime enjoyment of the pool with family and friends.
As always, there is a lot of ongoing maintenance work around the building, and for that
we have to be very thankful for our staff, Francisco, Rafael and Raul. We would like to
also extend an open invitation to anyone who has a suggestion or concern to attend our monthly meeting or
talk with me anytime you see me around the Lodge. In closing we would be amiss if we didn’t give a big round
of applause to outgoing ER Dan Kenny for his great job running the Lodge this year. We would also like to extend
our best wishes to fellow Building Corporation member and Leading Knight, Tom Dasher, who will be our new ER
for the upcoming Fraternal year. Thanks again for all of your support.
Fraternally yours,
Brian Decker, Building Corporation President.
National Convention in July, a revision to Section
16.090 of the Statutes. The change would read:
By an adopted Bylaw, all Homes, Clubs, Club Rooms
and Social Parlors shall have the OPTION TO EITHER
CLOSE OR REMAIN OPEN during the hours of all
regular and special meetings of the Lodge, EXCEPT
THERE WILL BE NO BAR SERVICE OR SALES OF
LIQUOR DURING A LODGE MEETING. The Lodge
meeting is to be held in an area that is isolated from
the rest of the Lodge and activities in other areas
should not interfere with the proper function of Lodge
meetings.
PROPOSAL
Dear Members:
San Mateo Lodge is attempting to change one of the
Grand Lodge Statutes. This proposal would be
presented, for a vote, at the National Convention in
July. If this proposal is voted on and passed it would
allow our Lodge and all of its’ facilities to REMAIN OPEN
during Lodge meetings.
This letter is being sent to all members to inform you
of the steps we need to take. At our Lodge meeting
on February 2, 2015, the proposal was read to everyone
attending this meeting. The next step will be to have
all members who are present at our Lodge meeting,
on March 2, 2015 vote on this proposal.
I hope all members understand how important this
change is for everyone. Please try and attend our
meeting on March 2, 2015, and cast your vote.
Fraternally yours, Jeanne Atno, PER
Currently the Grand Lodge Statute 16.090 reads as
follows:
All Homes, Clubs, Club Rooms and Social Parlors shall
be closed during the hours of all regular and special
meetings of the Lodge, except those facilities thereof
designated for the use of and then being used only
by the non-member spouses and minor children of
the members of the Lodge, providing the use does
not interfere with the proper functioning of Lodge
meeting. Any Lodge violating this Section under any
pretext whatever shall be liable to a forfeiture of its’
Charter.

Bocce Time
By Dan Ruiz
Greetings from the ever friendly environment of Bocce
land. The celebration of the holiday season has
ushered in the New Year, 2015; and we are anxiously
looking forward to our Spring Bocce Classic
Tournament in March. It looks like we will have a
tournament that extends for fourteen rather than
the usual seven weeks. This would enable every
team to play each other team twice. Most of our
bocce players seem to be in favor of the extended
tournament. Sign-ups for the spring tournament
should be posted in the Lodge around the first of
March. We look forward to the fellowship and always
friendly competition. Come and join us!!!
Bocce history revisited: bocce must have been part of
the therapeutic advice given by the early Greek
physician Hippocrates , who indeed believed that the
invigorating exercise provided by this game, at times
using coconuts, brought back from Africa, truly helped
players stay healthy. Later on, hard olive wood was
used to carve out bocce balls.
Quote: “Obstacles are what you see when you take
your eyes off your goal.”

Reporter
By Mike Reyna
Not much to report as we progress through the winter
months. Our first event of 2015 is scheduled for
March 11th at Skywest. The signup sheet will be
posted in mid-February. Skywest has made many
improvements to the course, and it is now in good
shape.
The most effective way for me to communicate to all
golfers is via email. If I don’t have your email, you
can send me an email at [email protected] and I will
add you to the distribution list. Several emails have
changed so that includes updates as well. Lastly,
Luda has done a great job (thanks Luda) posting
the golf schedule online. I forwarded the link to the
golf distribution code.
Please be on time with signups and payments for our
2015 tourneys. See you on the links in 2015.

Tennis News
By Jasson Durhan
Happy Valentine’s Day to all the sweethearts out
there. Well, we started our tennis league Jan. 11th for
the 40 plus 3.5 players with a home match against San
Carlos. Unfortunately, we lost 2-1 but we gave them a
good fight. Our next match will be in Half Moon Bay
and we plan on winning. Therefore, we are already
planning on going to Sam’s Chowder House after the

match to celebrate our victory. Yes, we are thinking
like winners … it’s got to help right?!
It has been great to see many tennis players back
on the courts this new year. The holidays are over
and apparently the New Year’s resolutions are kicking
in full force. You know those ones we make every
year …. to drop a few pounds, etc. Regardless, it is
great having everyone back. Looking out on the courts
Wednesday all anyone could see were many racquets
swinging.
Peter is back on the courts doing well. We have
seen a little of Dennis but Ron is still out of commission
for a few more months, don’t feel bad for him he is in
Hawaii soaking his bad knee in salty water.

We couldn’t have done it without you.
We are just kicking off our 2015 events and hope you
