Festival 2015
Preliminary, Primary & Junior Divisions
The BC Registered Music Teachers, South Fraser Branch welcomes you to
Festival 2015. We celebrate the students, teachers and parents who have
put extra effort, care and attention to each performance we will hear this
week. We are especially pleased to welcome our two adjudicators, Bernard
Duerksen and Jean Brown and look forward to the musical expertise they
will share.
Festivals promote performance excellence, intellectual challenge and
community. We hope you will take time to greet other students and share
new ideas
Our adjudicators will write separate comments for each participant and work
with individual students at the piano. They will grade each student in the
following categories:
Bronze
80% - 83%
Silver
84% - 87%
Gold
88% and up
All students who receive Gold Standings will be invited to perform at the
Celebration Recitals on Saturday, February 21st, 2015

PERFORMANCE GUIDELINES AND CONDUCT
DURING FESTIVAL AND CELEBRATION RECITALS
•
Each performer will provide the adjudicator with an original copy
of the music to be performed. Music books may not be shared in
the same class.
•
The performers name should be on the front of the music and a
page marker should be placed on the first page of the piece to
be played.
•
Late arrivals that are not present when called upon to perform
will be called again at the end of the class performances before
the oral adjudications begin. If not present at that time the
performer will be considered a no-show and will not be
permitted to play at a later time
•
As a courtesy to performers, we ask that you:
•
DO NOT BRING FOOD OR DRINK INTO THE FESTIVAL
•
DO NOT TALK OR WHISPER DURING PERFORMANCES OR
ADJUDICATIONS
•
ENTER AND EXIT ONLY BETWEEN PERFORMANCES
•
Entrants may not play on the festival piano outside of an actual
performance.
•
If you have a question regarding the Festival, please speak with
your teacher. Do not approach the adjudicators for discussion of
Festival matters.
•
Students should dress in an appropriate manner. Avoid jeans,
shorts, T‐shirts with slogans, sweats, and bare midriffs.
•
Recording equipment and photography of any kind is not
allowed in the festival classes.

Adjudicator’s Biography
BERNARD DUERKSEN
Mr. Duerksen’s training included
studies with Peter Katin, Jane
Coop, Robin Wood, John-Paul
Bracey, and composers PeterPaul Koprowski and Gerhard
Wuensch.
He is experienced in solo,
chamber and concerto
performances. In 1991 he was
honoured to work with Jean
Coulthard in preparation for the
world premiere performance of
Image Terrestre. His six-year
collaboration with baritone Glen
Harder culminated with an invitation to perform Schubert's Die Winterreise
at the 1993 International Schubert Conference and Festival at the
University of Victoria. He performs regularly in trios, quartets and quintets
with members of the VSO and VOO. He has made recordings for CBC radio
and is also an accomplished organist.
Bernard Duerksen is a graduate of UBC with a MMus degree, and is on
faculty at a number of Music Schools. He is currently chair of the keyboard
departrnent at the VSO School of Music. He has been actively teaching and
adjudicating for 35 years. In 2013 his student Ben Su placed 1st in the New
York International Artists Association Competition (age 15-17 category),
and 1st in the American Protege Competition and performed in Carnegie
Hall in February and March. In 2012, Mr. Duerksen was the hand double for
John Lithgow playing Bach in the movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

JEAN BROWN
Jean Brown counts Jean Lyons
and Lorne Watson among her
teachers. She is a certified
Suzuki Piano Teacher and has
been teaching Suzuki method to
children for the past 30 years.
Ms. Brown had the pleasure of
serving on the executive for the
Alumni of the Royal
Conservatory of Toronto for
several years. As well, she has
enjoyed adjudicating in various
music festivals of the lower mainland. As a piano teacher, Jean Brown has
had many outstanding students. They have represented Vancouver in the
National Finals of the Canadian Music Competitions in various cities across
Canada including Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Jolliette, and
Vancouver. Her students have been recognized across Canada with awards
and examination results, including the Gold Medal for the highest A.R.C.T.
mark in Canada. Presently she is teaching at the Jean Lyons School of
Music in Vancouver, and in her home in Port Moody.
