PASTOR’S MESSAGE
Anointing of the Sick: Call the parish office if someone is in
the hospital or homebound and would like communion and the
Sacrament of the Sick.
The Mass Times for Ash Wednesday on Feb. 18
are:
St. John the Baptist - 8:20am
Sacred Heart—5:30pm
St. Augustine—7:00pm
A commentary for Ash Wednesday states: “We
begin each Lent begging for ‘the blessing of
forgiveness.’ God longs for us to return to him with
our whole heart. For without such repentance we
remain tormented by the question, ‘Where is our
God?’ God has not cast us out of his presence;
rather, he desires us to ‘become the very holiness
of God.’ The Father ‘who is hidden’ waits for us to
pray, ‘A clean heart create for me, O God.’ Then
the way that we reach out to reality to become one
with it will reveal God’s saving Presence in every
circumstance. ‘The joy of our salvation’ begins
today” (Magnificat, 280).
When it comes to Lent or really any time in our
lives, I like what St. Paul says in his second letter
to the Corinthians, “In an acceptable time I heard
you, and on the day of salvation I helped you.
Behold, now is a very acceptable time; behold,
now is the day of salvation” (5:20-6:2).
Every day that God gives us is a day to prepare
ourselves because we never know what will come
first, the second coming of the Lord or our death.
We constantly need to be prepared, so do what
needs to be done in getting right with God and with
our brothers and sisters.
There will be some opportunities during this
Lenten Season to grow in prayer and
reconciliation. Mass with Stations of the Cross will
be held on Tuesday evenings at Sacred Heart at
5:30 p.m., on Thursday evenings at St.
Augustine at 5:30 p.m., and on Friday evenings
at St. John the Baptist at 7 p.m. Confession times
will also be available after Mass on those evenings.
Please consult the bulletin for special times as we
begin our Lenten journey!

Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18: Lent is a time of grace and renewal for the entire Church, especially for the catechumens and candidates preparing for
initiation during the Easter Triduum. The three traditional ascetical practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving are important pillars for a fruitful experience of Lent. Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are days of fasting (for those 14 through 59) and abstinence (for those 14 and over). The
Fridays of Lent remain days of abstinence (Notes from Bishop Weisenburger in the SDNB).
Catholic Community Annual Appeal: The theme for this year’s appeal is, Lift Up Your Hearts. The Catholic Community Annual Appeal supports
the many ministries of the Diocese including Youth and Adult Formation, Catholic Schools, Seminary Education, and Family Life. If you have not
yet made a gift to the Appeal, please take some time this week to pray about it and consider a gift.
Catechesis for World Meeting of Families: For more on the World Meeting of Families, to be held in Philadelphia, PA from Sept. 21-28, see the

Message of Life: “Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier. Be the living expression of
God’s kindness in your face, eyes and in your smile.” ~ Blessed Mother Teresa
We are approaching our goal: As a parishioner in the Diocese of Salina, you receive The Register twice a month to help keep you
informed about your diocese and the Catholic Church at large. Because we no longer required a paid subscription, we rely on your
generosity to help fund this initiative. If you have not donated this year to The Register, please consider a $20 contribution to offset our
printing and mailing costs. A $30 donation will help send the newspaper to someone who can’t afford to give. Thanks to more than
3,600 generous donors out of nearly 18,000 recipients of the newspaper, we have reached 80 percent of our goal for 2015. Please send your donation to The Register, P.O. Box 1038, Salina, KS 67402.
