Lake Joondalup Baptist College Secondary Inter House Swimming Carnival 2015 Lancier ● James ● Batavia ● Cumberland ● Windsor ● Arcadia Inter House Swimming Carnival Years 7-12 Thursday 26 February 2015 HBF Arena, Joondalup We are looking forward to another successful College Swimming Carnival to mark an enjoyable start to the new school year. We extend our thanks to you in anticipation of your involvement as swimmers, officials and administrative support personnel. The Swimming Carnival has been designed to: promote maximum participation for all students, and to add to the value of physical activity as a means of achieving a healthy lifestyle foster a spirit of encouragement towards others, and to develop respect for fellow competitors allow individuals to perform to the best of their ability in the presence of their peers, parents and teachers provide information regarding student performance to assist with the selection of the ACC Inter School Swimming Team Schedule 8.35am or earlier Meet at Connect – attendance and competitor numbers completed 8.55am or earlier Move to House meeting area: Lancier – Hall James – Graduation Walk Batavia – Science steps East Cumberland – Auditorium Windsor – Church Hall Arcadia – PAT 1 9.10am Carnival commences 9.15am – 3.10pm First event – Last event 3.10pm Seated with students in the House bay with House teachers. Clean up. Students change back into the College sports uniform/House colours 3.15pm Students dismissed Dress 1. Bathers are to be worn for all events 2. Modesty is required when wearing bathers for any College event/activity. One piece bathers or two piece sports bathers (racer-back style) are recommended for girls. If choosing to wear a bikini, students will be asked to wear a rash vest over it to swim in their events. Boys may choose to wear appropriate racing trunks or board shorts. 3. House coloured clothing is advisable. 4. If House colours are not worn, the College Sports uniform is to be worn to and from the College and HBF Arena. 5. Throughout the day, students are required to wear their College sports shirt or House shirt over their bathers when not competing in an event. HBF Arena does not permit the use of coloured dye or hair spray, paper streamers, or any other items that could conceivably make their way into the pool and disintegrate or block filters. Students are required to take: 1. College bag or College Tote bag 2. Lunch and snacks. Students are encouraged to bring small, healthy snacks that can be consumed throughout the day at regular intervals. 3. A minimum of 1 litre of water or juices. Glass is not permitted, please bring drinks in a suitable carry flask. 4. House or College sports shirt. Plain colour, no logos. Note: A sausage sizzle will be available to our students to purchase. Students will not be permitted to use the Arena canteen facilities. Movement of students during the Carnival Students are to remain under the supervision of their House teachers and may move around the grandstand with their permission Students may leave the grandstand to use the toilets near the central marshalling area. They will need to obtain a pass from their House teacher, and present this to the supervising teacher. Out of bounds areas For the duration of the carnival, competitors are not permitted: in the recreational section of HBF Arena pool area, adjacent to the Café. outside HBF Arena, unless under direct teacher supervision. Students wishing to depart HBF Arena with parents Students may leave HBF Arena with their parents instead of returning to the College; however, a note must be provided to the Connect teacher prior to the commencement of the carnival. The parent must personally collect the student from the HoH or House teacher. Conditions of participation The carnival is a scheduled Calendar event within the regular school week. Students who were selected in the 2014 ACC Inter School Swimming squad are expected to participate. Senior Secondary students sign up by choice but attendance and participation is compulsory for Lower Secondary students. Parents of students who are ill on the day must contact the Head of House prior to the event. Under certain circumstances, a medical certificate may be requested. The ACC swimming team will be selected from races held at the College swimming carnival. All students participating in the carnival are asked to check the HPE noticeboard when the ACC team is announced, to confirm their places in the ACC Inter School team. It is expected that students participating in the College Carnival make themselves available to represent the College at the ACC Inter School swimming competition in late March. Students who do not meet their obligations to represent the College if selected in a team may forfeit privileges to future events. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in all the events they can. The more students participate in the carnival, the more they enjoy themselves, and the more points they win for their House. Non-swimmers Senior Secondary students who do not wish to participate in at least two swimming events on the day, and who do not sign up prior to the day, will be expected to attend normal classes at school. No new work will be covered on carnival days. Starting procedure Signal from the Starter Swimmer’s action 1 One whistle blast Stand up straight at the BACK of the top of the block 2 “Take Your Marks” 3 Horn blast 4 Second horn blast Move down into the start position Look down your lane, NOT at the Starter Go False start – see below False starts Horn sounds a second time and the recall rope is released The second swimmer to cause a false start will be disqualified. A recall will not take place for a second false start. Finish procedure Touch the wall firmly. Both hands must touch the wall for Breaststroke and Butterfly events Move back from the wall, but stay in your lane Give your name to the recorder when asked. You may be asked to spell it out When instructed, quickly move under the lane ropes and leave the pool via the ladders at the side of the pool o Do not climb over the end of the pool o Do not climb over, sit on, or hang off the lane ropes. Scoring of Carnival events Carnival competitors are awarded points for their House according to a ranking system. Features of this scoring system are: points are awarded to individuals according their place within the year group, notwithstanding which heat they raced in a swimmer’s time will be compared to the times of other swimmers in the same age bracket. A number of points will be designated to the swimmer’s House according to the swimmer’s ranked time all swimming participants will score points for their House 50m individual event swimmers will accrue points for individual championship medallions the highest number of points possible for each event is twenty-five points. The lowest awarded is one point. Medallions/Trophies Students wanting to qualify for a medal must swim the three core 50m events - Freestyle, Breaststroke and Backstroke. Butterfly is an elective event, but it should be noted that participation in this event would increase the points scored for individual championship and House totals. Medallions will be established according to a student’s given age group. For example if a student is in Year 9, but is 15 years of age, they will be considered in the Under 16 Years age group for the medallion count. Medallions will be awarded for first (gold), second (silver) and third (bronze) highest male and female individual points scored in each age group. ACC Swimming Team Inter House competitor times will be combined with school and club training profiles to determine the composition of the ACC Inter School Swimming Team. Final discretion remains with the Head of Health and Physical Education and the Director of Sport. Swimmers who fail to attend the carnival without sufficient notice or reason will forfeit the right to selection for the College Swimming Team. Students who cannot attend the carnival but wish to be considered for selection should see the Head of Department for Health and Physical Education within a week of the Inter House Carnival.
