Health and Wellness Exxpo Essa News 2 | February 27 février 2015 | Citoyen Borden Citizen H ow do we say thank you to so many who so generously gave of food and finances to support those in our community needing assistance during this busy time of year? We can't express our gratitude enough for the great quantities of food brought in during the whole month of December. To all those volunteers who collected food in their areas and delivered it to us. To all the businesses who made their collection boxes available and the bags of food their customers could pay for as they paid for their own groceries. Thank you to: Sobeys, No Frills and Giant Tiger. The service clubs who went out of their way, and the arena staff who would run over to deliver the food that was left. Our public, separate and high schools, students and staff. You were all so great. I know we are missing some people and we don't want to, as you are so wonderful in your kindness and caring for those in need who are grateful to see our full shelves. We wish each and everyone of you a very healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. The Food Bank Volunteers wish you all well and again our thanks! For 32 years, the anniversary of the Royal Canadian Air Force, whose birthplace is here in Borden, has been recognized by the production of commemorative buttons and lapel pins which sport an aircraft of historical significance. This year’s aircraft is the Northrop A-17 Nomad Fighter/bomber. Thirty two (32) of these aircraft were taken on strength 75 years ago in 1940, with the majority assigned to Borden for use as advanced training aircraft. One of Borden’s Nomad aircraft, #3521, which disappeared during a search mission over Lake Muskoka in Dec 1940, was raised on 28th October 2014 from the icy waters. The aircraft will be displayed in the National Air Force Museum of Canada in Trenton Ont. The RCAF 91st Anniversary pins are for sale at the 16 Wing Headquarters and RCAF Academy Orderly Rooms, Canadian Forces School of Aerospace Technology and Engineering canteens and at CANEX. BY | PAR LEIGHSAH MILLWARD Staff Writer | Rédactrice Attitrée he Buell Fitness and Aquatic Centre was jam-packed with families who wanted to get out of the cold and spend some time together at the Winter Carnival hosted by PSP. The Fieldhouse was a bustle of activity and noise as children played, families socialized and everyone had a blast trying out a variety of activities planned for the day. In the middle of the room, “The Amazing” Frank Carlson kept a large crowd of children in awe as he performed a number of magic tricks with a bit of comedy for good measure. Inflatables kept the children busy, while airbrush tattoos and face painting made everyone look festive for the occasion. Booths were run by Health Promotions and the Borden Family Resource Centre providing information and diversions to visitors. “The bouncy castle is my favorite because you get to jump and slide. The magic show was cool. The bunny trick was my favorite. He had the bunny in a box and then it was nowhere. It disappeared and then it was there!” said Owen Gallagher, who recently celebrated his 6th birthday. Rock climbing and snowshoeing were available for the more adventurous crowd, and everyone was kept fueled up with pizza thanks to the Borden Community Council, and poutine from Smoke’s Poutinerie, who also donated prizes. Mid-day, a draw was held for a number of prizes, including round-trip airline tickets from Porter Airlines won by Carolina Calderon. “I’m so excited to share this with my sister, I was not expecting that!” commented Calderon. “We just came to work out and thought, might as well come in and see the carnival. We’re ecstatic! Thank you!” Later in the afternoon saw many families participating in bowling at Circled Pine Lanes, Josie and Callie stop to pet the magician’s rabbit. A huge thank you goes to our sponsors Porter Airlines, Giant Tiger, Mountain Equipment Co-op, MY FM, Zehrs Markets, Tim Hortons Borden and Smoke’s Poutinerie for providing prizes, and donations. “It’s outstanding! We have had over 500 participants today and really, this is to thank our families. As you know, without our families we wouldn’t be able to do the job we have to do,” commented Base Commander, Col Doyon. “So really it’s to thank them but also at the same time to have fun with our kids and families to thank them for their support. Again, it’s an outstanding day for our families!” Photos: Leighsah Millward Mailing Address adresse postale: The Citoyen Borden Citizen PO Box 1000, Stn Main, Borden, Ontario L0M 1C0 Parker, age 7 gives his best tarzan yell as he swings across the Buell’s pool. » The inflatables were very popular amongst the Base’s children. Citoyen Borden Citizen | February 27 février 2015 | 7 O The Veteran’s UN NATO Canada Group Borden – Barrie support the Salvation Army on Valentine’s Day By/Par: WO/Adj J.S. Barrett n Saturday, February 14, the Veteran’s Canada UN/NATO Barrie-Borden Group had the unique experience of assisting the Salvation Army Kitchen on 16 Bayfield St, Barrie. It was an eye opener for many and the dedication to this event from our members was appreciated by all. We were able to support those in need and less fortunate on Valentine’s Day and shared an amazing day together for a great cause. Our afternoon was comprised cafeteria cleanup, food preparation, serving the meals and post cleanup. We were fortunate to be able to play cards, board games and enjoy conversation with the staff and those stopping in out of the cold prior to dinner being served. Two of our Veteran Members’ daughters, Zoe Taschereau, age 14, and Sonia Barrett, age 8, volunteered as well, preparing, serving, chatting and making friendship bracelets for many smiling faces. Our Group is volunteering again at the Salvation Army on Saturday, February 21 and visiting the Toronto Veterans Hospital in March. If you have any questions about our group membership or activities, Please contact WO John Barrett at CFB Borden Base Operations. MacKenzie, Local Lawyer Angus 705-424-1331 THREE SISTERS, A BOOZER AND A BOOTLEGGER n 1945, $9,000.00 would be a fair sized estate; big enough to capture the attention of an "evil genius" and big enough to bring a case to trial and then on to the court of appeal. Joseph Carron kept most of his money in a safety deposit box at a Windsor bank. Shortly after he died at 39 from health problems related to his alcoholism, his bootlegger, Cloe Lucier, scooped his personal belongings from his rooming house and claimed the money stored at the bank. She produced a stationer's will signed by Carron a few days before his death and witnessed by Lucier's son and daughter. The will made Lucier executrix and beneficiary except for $5.00 left to each of Carron's three sisters. The sisters successfully challenged the will. The court of appeal ruled that it would not uphold a will where there was a well grounded suspicion that it did not Uncover More Legal Grounds at: truly express the wishes of its maker, unless the suspicion could be disproved (Lucier v. Lynch, 1947). Lucier could not disprove the suspicion. Her liquor law convictions, her relentless efforts to bring Carron back to the booze when he tried to sober up, and certain errors in the will that Carron could not have made led the court to conclude that the will was part of a concerted effort by Lucier and her daughter to get their hands on Carron's money. If your will is unusual, be careful how its made. It could be overturned in suspicious circumstances. This article is presented as general information only and is not to be relied on as legal advice. You should contact your lawyer to see how the law applies to your circumstances before any action is taken. yourlocallawyer.com 12 | February 27 février 2015 | Citoyen Borden Citizen Assisting Military Clients Since 1988!
