Once a nurse in Toronto, she has the passion to help and wanted to show her support by providing our military members some comfort during their recovery. Originally inspired by the Portraits of Honour, she found a way to do something for the families of the fallen and for the soldiers who came home injured. It was with the wool that her mother left her that she began creating her afghan blankets. She spent the winter crocheting afghans while watching the Leafs play hockey and by the spring she had completed a dozen blankets and was ready to make a donation to the base. Through a search online she found the Director of Casualty Support Management (DCSM) who put her in contact with the Integrated Personnel Support Centre (IPSC) in Borden. Since that initial donation in 2010, Dorothy has made 2 trips a year, and along with contributions from ladies in her community, they have donated over 40 afghans. Those blankets have been given to members in treatment, families of the fallen and those in need of comfort. On her most recent visit, she had the opportunity to speak to a member who had received one of her blankets. As they spoke she talked about how she was moved after seeing the portraits of our fallen soldiers and how realistic they were. He in turn told her that he had met some of those soldiers on tour. He gave her an overview of being in theatre and thanked her for thinking of the members who came home injured. On behalf of the IPSC we would like to thank Dorothy for her kindness and support. Pictured are Dorothy and Shirley Atkinson sitting with their most recent donation. New programming at the Essa Public Library! BY LEIGHSAH MILLWARD Citoyen Borden Citizen Seed Library “The new Seed Library comes from a movement that started 10 years ago in California as a response to the decreasing bio diversity of agricultural seeds and the decreasing knowledge in the public of how to save seeds, grow your own food, where your food comes from and the seasonality of foods. The seed library will encourage food literacy the same way that the library encourages book literacy,” explained Mark Stewart, Manager of Public Services. Seeds that have been purchased or donated from various seed companies and community members have been catalogued and will be available in March to check out on your library card for free. You check them out, plant, enjoy your harvest and then save some of the seeds and return them at the end of the season. This program will not have late fees. In fact the library is hoping to get seeds back to keep this program self-sustainable. Donations are accepted of nonGMO seeds and well labelled seeds (year, genus, species, cultivar) with heirloom organic being the ideal. Workshops will run in the spring at the Angus Branch to educate gardeners: March 21 -Seed Starting, April 18 - Soil Preparation, and May 16 - Seed Saving. Please RSVP. Kitchen Library “The Kitchen Library rolls into our food literacy plan, to help people who are curious about learning about their food, to give them the tools to make things. You can learn a lot from a book, but you can also learn a lot from a food processor for example,” says Stewart. Small kitchen appliances, baking tools, and many speciality kitchen/cooking implements are now available for a regular 3 week check out on your library card. These items have been cataloged and placed into the library cookbook section for our community to share. The library asks that you make sure these items are properly cleaned prior to their return. If you have any seldom used kitchen tools and would like to donate for our community’s use, please drop by the Angus branch. If you are interested in running a workshop in conjunction to either of these two new initiatives, please don’t hesitate to let the librarians know as they are always open to community education ideas. McClung, Louise C. McKinney, Emily F. Murphy and Irene Parlby made history as they won their appeal with the Supreme Court of Canada to have women officially recognized as “persons” in the British North America Act. (Canadiana.ca). Since then, women have come a long way. CFB Borden celebrated the achievements of women late last week as International Women’s Day was observed across the Base. On Thursday, March 5, the Borden Family Resource Centre invited the Base’s women to come out for a special morning of activities. “We are here to celebrate the achievements that women have made worldwide, economically, socially and politically, also to recognize the important women in our lives, reflect on the roles we play in other’s lives as women: mothers, friends, sisters and grandmothers,” commented Shara Hicks, Child and Youth Program Assistant Supervisor at the BFRC. To start the day, the women got creative with clay, led by military spouse, Vivian Sophia Mora who also teaches art workshops to the Base children. « Nous sommes ici pour souligner les réalisations des femmes partout dans le monde, sur le plan économique, social et politique, et également sion of yoga to help them relax, and find presence, led by another military spouse, Sarah Hofing, who teaches Children’s and Baby Yoga at the Buell. “I think we should have this day every day, I love Women’s Day!” commented participant, Denese Langridge. “The activities have been fun and relaxing, things we need to do.” On Friday, March 6, the women and men of the Base were invited to the Officers Mess for a women’s panel discussion and information booths presented by various Base entities. Special guests, Lt Col (ret’d) Kristine Swain, US Army, MCpl Tanya Logan, RCAF, and Janick Lemieux, Life Coach spoke to the assembled crowd about their experiences and the things that inspired them to achieve in their lives. Swain encouraged the audience to “be the change” they want to see in their lives, to be liberated from hopelessness and fear, and to take positive action in our lives. Logan, a mother and grandmother, who overcame challenges to realize her lifelong dream to join the military at age 40, inspired the audience, saying, “you are never too old to pursue your dreams, to have a dream and just go for it.” And finally, Lemieux urged the audience to see past experiences and challenges, which create opportunities for understanding, forgiveness, learning and growth, to learn to love and honour ourselves and others unconditionally. “I am a believer in women, in their ability to do things and in their influence and power. Women set the standards for the world, and it is for us, women in Canada, to set the standards high.” -Nellie McClung. At the BFRC’s Women’s Day celebrations, the ladies explored their creativity with clay. » Nellie McClung. I Camp is for BY | PAR LEIGHSAH MILLWARD Staff Writer | Rédactrice Attitrée everyone! Additional weeks are available at an additional charge. The service is offered on a first come, first served basis with priority going to military families. Children who already have a private Inclusion Facilitator can bring their facilitator to the camp at no additional charge beyond their regular camp fee. t might be winter now, but the thought of playing in the summer sunshine is tickling the minds of our Community Recreation Department as they plan for the upcoming Summer Camp season. As always, things are evolving at Com Rec, this year an Inclusion Facilitation program is being offered in conjunction with camps and swimming lessons. An Inclusion Facilitator is a support person for the regular program instructor, who provides oneon-one assistance to a child with a disability or special needs so that they can participate in the programs. “We want everyone to have a chance to come out and enjoy our rec programs. Summer camp to me is a rite of passage of the summer as a kid. Most kids go to summer camp, whether they go for a week or an entire summer; it’s that experience of what summer is,” says Cheryl Bedard, the Aquatics Coordinator at the Buell. “Being with other kids in a social environment, getting to swim in the pool, getting to go on a day trip and do all of those things; we want to make sure we have those doors open to everyone to be able to participate in a week of camp, to make that camping experience a positive one for that individual and also make it positive for everyone involved.” Inclusion Facilitation is included during the first week of camp at no extra charge for any child requiring the one-on-one service. As Com Rec is looking to expand the program in the future to possibly include Inclusion Facilitators in regular programs such as dance, gymnastics, etc… they really want to hear from parents. They are willing to work with parents to tailor the Recreation experience to the needs of the child. “The key is communication. If someone comes and communicates with us, this is our need, this is what we have that we can provide, than we can say “how can we work together?” “If we don’t know until just before camp starts, we don’t have options to assist. So seek us out and talk to us so we can work with you to develop what is going to work for your child. The aquatic opportunity evolved because a parent contacted me, and said this is my situation and what can we do. So she and I worked together to make this fantastic opportunity possible, to make things better for everyone.” Summer camp changes for this year also include a new Aqua Sports Camp, which focuses on pool driven sports and activities. Campers attending this camp can expect to spend the majority of the day in the pool, with land activities including improving skills related to the watersports being covered that week. Currently the Aqua Sports Camp is anticipating a day trip to Wasaga Beach for lessons in stand up paddling from a certified instructor, as well as activities such as water polo, synchro swim, and underwater hockey. Of course there are the favorites: Junior Lifeguard Camp (down to one week this year), and Summer Fun Camp, which features a different theme each week, trips to places such as the Elmvale Zoo, and Plunge Waterpark, swimming, bowling, crafts, games and much more! Story time with soldiers 8 | March 13 mars 2015 | Citoyen Borden Citizen L BY | PAR LEIGHSAH MILLWARD Staff Writer Rédactrice Attitrée iteracy is important. Without it you would not be reading this article right now. Literacy opens the doors to so many opportunities and gives hope of a future to young Canadians. Each winter, our nation celebrates literacy, especially in our public schools. At Maple Grove Public School in Barrie, literacy involves a community. Thanks to Mrs. Cahill, a former military cook turned teacher, our soldiers are helping to fight a different battle. Mrs. Cahill is a former student of Sgt Lebrun, a military cook here at Borden. She contacted him and invited military members to come and read to the students of the school, and encourage them to improve their literacy. This is now the second year that Sgt Lebrun, and a group of about 10 other military members, both NCM and Officer, representing a host of different trades have joined Barrie community members, including Barrie’s Mayor at Maple Grove reading to youth. The community members read to all the different grades at the school, younger and older alike, who all enjoyed the interactions, especially as they got to ask the soldiers about what they do at the end of the sessions. “We would read a story to them and then try to convey to them how important literacy is in your day to day life, how you need to be able to read and write to get ahead and do the things you want to be able to do, and relate how literacy comes into play in a day to day job in the military,” explained Sgt Lebrun. “We talked about recipes, if you want to cook you need to be able to read because you have recipes that you have to read and follow. If you want to create something new that you’ve never cooked before it’s important to know how to read because you’ve got to be able to read the recipe. The older groups were full of lots of questions, wanting to know more about the military. There was a good exchange there both the importance of literacy and a little bit of an exchange about the day to day jobs in the military from each individual member that came to speak. We had clerks, cooks, public affairs, an ammo tech, a wide variety of jobs represented from the military. It was good; they had some quite thoughtful questions to ask.” Sgt Lebrun, still an avid reader himself looks forward to repeating the visit to the school next year. “I love kids, I’ve been on a lot of tours, and I was able to help in the local areas to do things for young kids, and be engaged with young kids. I think that goes a long way in Photo: Sgt Lebrun Maj Andrea Sloan reads to one of the classes at Maple Grove Public School in Barrie. Le Maj Andrea Sloan fait la lecture à l’un des groupes de l’école publique Maple Grove à Barrie. our own community to touch base with the youth in the local areas to be engaged with them so they know what we do, how we do it and why we do it. No matter what you want to do, those skill sets of being able to read and write well will always be there. It’s fun and rewarding and who doesn’t like working with kids? They are a lot of fun!” » Citoyen Borden Citizen | March 13 mars 2015 | 9 10 | March 13 mars 2015 | Citoyen Borden Citizen Earth Day Celebration April 22 from 9 a.m. to 1p.m. Join Parent- Child Services in celebration of Earth Day. MacKenzie, Local Lawyer Angus 705-424-1331 DECISIONS IN THE MIST fter his wife of 50 years died, John Park suffered a stroke and never entirely recovered. While he seemed more alert after his morning gin and enjoyed talking about golf, he was dejected and indifferent. His associates doubted whether he understood the financial details of his successful shipping business. He was keen on remarrying, proposing to his late wife's friend, Lady Greer, who declined, and to a cashier at his club, who accepted. About a year after his stroke, on May 30, 1949, he wed Blodwen Park. He died less than 3 weeks later. The fight over the estate resulted in two trials with contradictory results. Initially, a jury decided the will prepared by Mr. Park on the day he was married was invalid because he was not of sound mind, memory and understanding. Losing the first case, the family tried to invoke a will Mr. Park made earlier that was revoked by the marriage. They argued Uncover More Legal Grounds at: the marriage was invalid because Mr. Park did not have the mental capacity to wed. Although the jury found him incapable of making the new will, the judge in the second trial decided that he had the mental capacity to get married. The earlier will was revoked and Mrs. Park was granted authority to administer the estate (Park v. Park, 1953). Do you need more competence to make a will than marry? The judge thought so. The court of appeal agreed that the marriage was valid, but said the conflicting decisions resulted from the different evidence proven at each trial; there is no increased capacity requirement.. Ultimately, a new trial would have clearly settled the question. This article is presented as general information only and is not to be relied on as legal advice.
