ou may have noticed that Giant
Tiger has gotten a facelift!
Giant Tiger celebrated their
Grand Re-opening with the completion of
the work that has been going on over the
summer.
As part of the celebrations, Giant Tiger
gave away $500 in gift cards to the first
50 customers who walked into the store.
Children were able to have their faces
painted or to meet Princess Elsa from
Disney’s Frozen. Friendly the Tiger was
also a big hit with the kids as he walked
around the store greeting customers.
“We are very pleased as this is a new
look for Giant Tiger,” commented Gerry
Crowe, Owner. “We are able to offer people the same assortment, show our merchandise better, and give people more
space to shop or look around. We are
looking forward to looking after our customers, not just for the last twenty years,
but for the next twenty years with our
new look. That’s what we are happy
about!”

seeking new members for both the Legion and Ladies Aux. The
Legion is looking for members of the community for support in

• The Fred Eaglesmith Show
Returns to the Angus Legion Nov 21 as part of his
Fall tour, playing music for the soul and for charity.
Each show boasts a Charity Pie Auction. The rapid-fire auctioneer’s chant comes easily to Eaglesmith, as he spurs the audience
to bid on a home-baked pie that stirs up memories of farmhouses
and threshing crews.
This money is donated to Operation Smile, a charity that helps
treat facial deformities such as cleft lips & cleft palates in third
world countries. In 2013, the show donated over $26,000 for
Operation Smile. 2014 numbers should match or exceed last
year’s total.

never knew her grandfather, but she
did know a great deal about his life and
his service to Canada.
“He fought for our country, he was
brave and strong says my dad,”
Amanda commented as she adjusted
her poppy. Amanda has come to
Borden every year with her Father to
pay respect to their family member, as
well as to remember the thousands of
soldiers who have defended our country and its liberties.
Hundreds gathered under sunny
skies at the Worthington Tank Park at
CFB Borden on Tuesday, November
11th to remember all Peacekeepers
past and present.
Base chaplain Maj. Michael Allen
touched upon many of the battles in
Canadian history that claimed soldier’s
lives, all the way to the present day
attacks in Ottawa and Quebec. The
deaths of Warrant Officer Patrice
Vincent, killed in a hit and run attack
in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que. on
October 20, and Cpl. Nathan Cirillo,
who was shot and killed while standing guard at Ottawa’s National War
memorial in Ottawa on October 22
Wreaths were laid at the foot of the Worthington Park Cenotaph on
behalf of Veterans, military members, community leaders and civilians.

Carol Collier, Mother of Sapper Brian
Collier, the 151st Canadian killed in
Afghanistan laid a wreath at the foot of
the cenotaph to commemorate her
son’s memory. Veterans, military
members, community leaders and
civilians also took part in the laying of
the wreaths.
Two cannons shots reverberated
over the crowd to mark the beginning
and conclusion of the moment of
silence, a time to reflect on the millions of soldiers who have served
Canada and the world and for those
who paid the ultimate price so that we
may live free.
In Angus, another Remembrance
ceremony took place, citizens of
Angus alongside many CAF Members
and Veterans filled the street at the
cenotaph close by the Angus Legion. A
parade began at the legion and wound
it’s way to the cenotaph where Rev
Norm Munroe of Angus, Grenfel and
Utopia United Churches led a moving
service for the Fallen, thanked our
serving soldiers and spoke of the hope
for peace.
After the conclusion of the ceremony hundreds of
military members and civilians laid their poppies by
the wreaths and took a moment of personal remembrance.

Le mardi 11 novembre, des cenfaines de personnes se
sont réunies sous un ciel ensoleillé au parc de chars
Worthington de la BFC Borden pour rendre hommage à tous
les gardiens de la paix passés et présents.
L’aumônier de la base, le Maj Michael Allen a parlé des
nombreux combats dans l’histoire du Canada, qui ont
fauché la vie de soldats, jusqu’aux attaques récentes à
Ottawa et à Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu. Le décès de l’adjudant
maître Patrice Vincent, tué dans un délit de fuite à SaintJean-sur-Richelieu, au Québec, le 20 octobre, et du caporal
Nathan Cirillo, abattu alors qu’il montait la garde devant le
Monument commémoratif de guerre du Canada à Ottawa, le
22 octobre, semble avoir donné un nouveau sens au jour du
Souvenir. On a fait référence aux attaques au pays, et les
visiteurs ont commenté le lien avec le jour du Souvenir. « Je
viens ici chaque année », a dit Louise Bergeron, « mais les
attaques du mois dernier sont tellement fraîches dans la
mémoire de chacun que cette année, le jour du Souvenir est
un peu plus difficile. »
Un moment d’émotion a été ressenti lors de la prestation

Deux coups de canon ont marqué le début et la fin de la
minute de silence, un moment pour s’arrêter et avoir une
pensée pour les millions de soldats qui ont servi le Canada
et le monde et pour toutes les personnes qui ont consenti
l’ultime sacrifice pour notre liberté.
À Angus, une autre cérémonie du jour du Souvenir a eu
lieu. Les citoyens d’Angus, accompagnés de nombreux
membres des FAC et de vétérans ont rempli la rue devant le
cénotaphe, près de la Légion, chapitre d’Angus. Un défilé a
commencé à la Légion et s’est poursuivi jusqu’au cénotaphe, où le rév. Norm Munroe, des églises unies d’Angus,
de Grenfel et d’Utopia, a dirigé un service émouvant en
hommage aux militaires tombés au champ d’honneur,
remercié nos soldats en service et livré un message de paix.

mess dinners, but there is a special
tradition of remembrance associated
with the dinners that the public rarely gets to see.
On Remembrance Day, Maj Kelly LabereeSampson brought the tradition to grades 3-6 at
Académie La Pinède.
“I think it’s important for the school to learn
about our culture because they see us day in and
day out, and understand what we do and the
impact of what we do,” explain LabereeSampson. “I was in Afghanistan last year, so for
me its extra special to present the table for the
Fallen Comrade and the idea of the toast which
happens at our mess dinners, and to share a little
bit of our culture and history with them.”
In the dining room, a small table is set in a
place of honour where no one sits; this table is
reserved for the Fallen. Before the meal, attention
is drawn to the table to pay tribute to the men and
women who made the ultimate sacrifice so that
we may know and enjoy freedom. Each element
on the table is placed with purpose. The following was read to the children by Maj LabereeSampson in the tradition of the Mess Dinner:
“Set in Remembrance of all those who have
passed through the Front Gates and who were
never able to return home: The table or place setting is small and sparse, symbolizing the frailty of
our chosen profession. The tablecloth is white,
symbolizing the purity of our comrades’ intentions when they answered our country’s call to
arms. The red ribbon tied so prominently on the
vase, is symbolic of the blood they have shed so
that we may enjoy freedom. The slice of lemon is
set on the bread plate, to remind us of their bitter
fate. The salt upon the bread plate, is symbolic of
the families’ tears as they wait for someone who
will not return. The glass is inverted, for they cannot toast with us this evening. The chair tilted for-

ward, for they are not here in body but they are
with us in spirit.”
This beautiful and moving tribute is always
present, not only to remember the Fallen, but also
to remember where we came from. Nothing is
gained without sacrifice.
“It really is important for us because the military is our community. Today I am very pleased
to have members of our community in our school
and we have a class representing our school at the
cenotaph, who will be laying a wreath in our
name,” commented Anne-Marie Villeneuve,
Principal. “I love having parents come in and
share their experiences. I hope the kids take away
the sense of community, but the importance of
peace, that we are all human. It’s nice to see the
parents in a different role. They see them as mom
and dad at home, but here it’s their job and we so
appreciate what our military does for us. We are
so happy when you come home safely and in
honour of those who don’t, we will remember.”

Maj Laberee-Sampson. « Comme j’étais en Afghanistan l’année dernière, il
est très spécial pour moi de présenter la tradition de la table pour les camarades tombés au champ d’honneur ainsi que l’idée du toast que nous perpétuons à notre dîner régimentaire, et de montrer aux enfants un peu de notre
culture et de notre histoire. »
Dans la salle à manger, une petite table est dressée à une place d’honneur
où personne ne s’assoit; cette table est réservée aux soldats morts au combat. Avant le repas, l’attention est tournée vers la table pour que l’on puisse
rendre hommage aux hommes et aux femmes qui ont fait le sacrifice ultime,
que l’on en prenne conscience et que l’on profite de notre liberté. Chaque
élément de la table est placé dans un but précis. Le Maj Laberee-Sampson
a lu aux enfants le texte suivant qui s’inscrit dans la tradition du dîner régimentaire :
« Le couvert a été dressé en mémoire de ceux qui nous ont précédés et
qui n’ont jamais pu rentrer chez eux :
Les accessoires de table sont petits et peu nombreux pour rappeler la
fragilité de notre profession. La nappe est blanche, symbolisant la pureté des
intentions de nos compagnons lorsqu’ils ont répondu à l’appel aux armes
lancé par notre pays. Le ruban rouge entourant le vase, bien en vue,
représente le sang qu’ils ont versé pour que nous puissions jouir de la liberté. La tranche de citron dans l’assiette à pain évoque l’amertume de leur
destin. La pincée de sel dans l’assiette à pain symbolise les larmes versées
par les familles qui attendent le retour de ceux qui ne reviendront jamais.
Le verre est inversé parce que nos compagnons d’armes ne pourront
porter de toast avec nous ce soir. La chaise est inclinée vers l’avant pour
indiquer qu’ils sont absents quoique présents en esprit. »
Nous rendons toujours ce bel et émouvant hommage non seulement pour
nous souvenir des soldats morts au combat, mais également pour nous rappeler nos origines. Rien n’est gagné sans sacrifice.
« Cela est vraiment important pour nous parce que les militaires sont
notre communauté. Aujourd’hui, je suis très heureuse que des membres
soient dans notre établissement et qu’un groupe représentant notre école se
trouve au cénotaphe. Il y déposera une couronne en notre nom », a indiqué
Anne-Marie Villeneuve, directrice. « J’adore que des parents viennent à l’école pour partager leurs expériences. J’espère que les enfants retiendront ce
sens de la communauté, mais également l’importance de la paix et le fait que
nous sommes tous des êtres humains. C’est un plaisir de voir les parents
dans un rôle différent. Les enfants les perçoivent comme leur père et leur
mère à la maison, mais ici, ils les voient dans le cadre de leur travail et nous
apprécions tellement ce que les militaires font pour nous. Nous sommes très
heureux lorsque vous rentrez chez vous sains et saufs, et en l’honneur de
ceux dont ce n’est pas le cas, nous nous souviendrons. »

winter pastimes revolve
around the ice, building
good skating skills will open a
world of activity for a young person. Whether or not your child
dreams of becoming the next
Joannie Rochette or Sidney
Crosby, it all starts in the same
place. The Base Borden Skating
Club will teach your child core
skating skills, helping them to
master movement both forward
and backward, stopping, jumping
and using edges to maneover
around the ice surface. Building
blocks for “public skating where
they can stop if they need to on a
quick note, or if they want to
advance up into hockey, these are
good skating skills to learn
through Canskate too,” says Head
Coach, Shelley Crawford.
It all starts at the age of 3-5
with KidSkate, teaching your child
to walk on the skates, and to
achieve some forward motion. As
they progress, ages 5 and up will
move through 6 levels of basic
skills, building on the use and
mastery of each skill in the
CanSkate program. Children in
these two programs can expect les-
sons that are taught through games
and circuits with an emphasis on
fun. The ratio is 10 children per
coach, with instruction throughout
the entire lesson time. Helping the
Coaches are Program Assistants,
who are in fact club members over
12 years of age who have pursued
a training course with the Head
Coach. This is a special mentoring
program, allowing aspiring young
skaters to give back to their club
and earn volunteer hours at the
same time.
For aspiring figure skaters, the
next level is the Star Skate
Program. This program focuses on
advanced skills such as spins,
jumps, learning dances and how to
make better use of your edges.
These lessons prepare a skater for
competition with 2 shorter group
lessons, then free time to practice
or booked private lesson with a
coach.

accomplished in a short amount of

club teaches more than just skating, it also promotes “self confidence, self-esteem, good work

too, because we do a fast track

les compétences fondamentales en patin, pour l’aider à

carres pour se déplacer sur
la glace. Composantes de
base du « patinage libre où il
faut parfois s’arrêter très
rapidement, ou à utiliser au
hockey, ce sont de bonnes
compétences de patinage à
apprendre par l’intermédiaire du programme Patinage
Plus », indique l’entraîneurchef, Shelley Crawford.
Le programme Miniglace commence dès l’âge
de 3 à 5 ans. Les enfants
apprennent à marcher sur
des patins et à faire certains
mouvements vers l’avant.
Au fur et à mesure de leur
progression, les enfants de 5
ans et plus se déplacent dans
les 6 niveaux de compétences fondamentales, en
développant et en maîtrisant
chaque compétence du programme Patinage Plus. Les
enfants de ces deux programmes apprennent par le
jeu et par des circuits, et
l’accent est mis sur le
plaisir. Le ratio entraîneurenfant est de 10 enfants par
entraîneur, et toute la période de cours est consacrée à
l’instruction. Les assistants
qui aident les entraîneurs
sont en fait des membres du
Club âgés de plus de 12 ans,
qui ont suivi un cours d’instructeur avec l’entraîneurchef. Il s’agit d’un programme de mentorat qui
permet aux jeunes patineurs
de redonner au Club en plus
d’accumuler des heures de
bénévolat.
Pour
les
aspirants
patineurs artistiques, le
prochain niveau est le programme Patinage Star. Ce
programme est axé sur les
compétences
avancées
somme les vrilles, les sauts,
la danse et une meilleure
utilisation des carres. Ces
leçons préparent le patineur
à la compétition avec deux
leçons en petits groupes,
jumelées à des périodes
libres d’exercice ou à des
leçons privées réservées
avec l’entraîneur.
Les leçons se donnent du
mois d’octobre à la fin février, tous les mardis et jeudis
en soirée : Mini-glace de 18
h à 18 h 30, Patinage Plus de
18 h 30 à 19 h 15 et Patinage
Star de 19 h 15 à 20 h 50.
Le Club célèbre les jours
de fête avec les enfants et
tient à la fin de la saison un
spectacle complet avec costumes et musique, suivi
d’une cérémonie de remise
de prix.
« Les parents sont contents et impressionnés par le
programme de patinage et
les réalisations des enfants
en si peu de temps », a commenté Mme Crawford. Au
Club, on enseigne plus que
le patin, on y fait également
la promotion « de la confiance en soi, de l’estime de
soi, d’une bonne éthique du
travail et on y apprend à
interpréter des diagrammes
et des symboles pour suivre
les circuits d’entraînement.

very year, CFB Borden participates in the
Government of Canada Charitable Workplace
Campaign supporting the United Way and
HealthPartners to help make a difference in the lives of people living in our community.
By donating to the GCWCC program, you are helping to
build strong local agencies and social service programs, to
develop partnerships to address complex social issues and to
advocate on your community’s behalf. In fact, for every dollar you donate, 85 cents goes directly back to the community with the other 15 cents going to fundraising efforts and
administration costs. You can also designate your donation
to your own favorite registered Canadian charity by donating with the GCWCC pledge form.
The United Way has three main goals. The first is to help
move people from poverty to possibility through employment/skill development, and access to necessities such as
housing, food and transportation. The next goal is about creating healthy people and strong communities through physical and mental health services and by helping to create safe
communities through programs aimed at violence. The last
goal is to help children be all that they can be through after
school and extra circular activities, relationship support,
mentoring and family programs. Children and youth are the
future of our communities.
The GCWCC is the largest and most successful workplace fundraising campaign in Canada. Last year over $41.3
million was raised by federal employees and retirees across

collectivité.
En contribuant au programme de la CCMTGC, vous
aidez à former des organismes locaux forts et à appuyer des
programmes locaux de service, afin de créer des partenariats dans le but de régler des problèmes sociaux complexes
et de faire campagne au nom de votre collectivité. En fait,

Occupants of DND hous-
ing are fully responsible for
damages caused by their
neglect or misuse. Any
major problem while you’re
away will be immediately
reported to CFHA by your
house sitter and there may
be no cost to you. As well,
many insurance policies
will not cover you for damages should you not appoint
someone to look after the
home in your absence.
As an example, last year
during the winter block
leave period a number of
occupants left on leave. Not
only did they not appoint a
house sitter, but they turned
off the heat to save money
on their gas bill. The water

When they returned home

the homes. This caused

leur retour, les occupants
ont allumé l’appareil de
chauffage et les conduites
ont éclaté, inondant la maison. Les réparations ont
coûté des milliers de dollars, montants que les occupants ont dû payer. Dans la
plupart des cas, les dommages n’étaient pas couverts par leur assurance.

ver the summer, 16 Wing held their annual Wing Commander’s Golf
Tournament. This event is held as a fundraiser as well as a Wing activity, with the
charity of choice being none other than the Borden Family Resource Centre!
Thus on Thursday, October 23, the Wing Commander made a visit to the BFRC to see how
the donation was used.
“We replaced some older equipment. The kids love it. The activity wall they just love!”
exclaimed Michelle Joyes, Child Care Program Supervisor. “There’s tricycles and gliders
(no-pedal bikes), outdoor building blocks, outdoor wicker baskets to hold equipment,
there’s some jungle animals that they are burying in the sand like archaelogists, and a new
safety surface. They love it. We are so grateful to be able to receive these funds.”
“Families are very important and any support we can provide to them is very important,”
explained LCol Rodgers, 16 Wing Commander. “16 Wing being a lodger formation on the
Base, we don’t have any direct input to the BFRC and having a charity golf tournament and
being able to raise this kind of money and directly inject it right into the BFRC is a really
good way for us to contribute to the Base to support families. That’s why we’ll continue to
support this organization.” Bravo Zulu 16 Wing!

plus d’être une activité d’unité, ce tournoi est organisé en vue de recueillir des
fonds pour une œuvre caritative de choix : nulle autre que le Centre de ressources
à la famille de Borden! Le commandant de l’Escadre a donc rendu visite au CRFB le jeudi
23 octobre pour voir comme le don a été utilisé.
« Nous avons remplacé certaines pièces d’équipement désuètes. Les enfants les adorent.
Ils raffolent également du mur d’activités », s’est exclamée Michelle Joyes, superviseure du
programme de garderie. « Nous avons des tricycles, des porteurs (tricycles sans pédales),
des blocs de construction pour l’extérieur, des paniers en osier pour l’extérieur, des animaux
de la jungle à enterrer dans le sable pour les archéologues en herbe ainsi qu’une nouvelle
surface sécuritaire. Les enfants sont très contents. Nous sommes vraiment reconnaissantes
pour ces fonds. »
« Les familles sont très importantes et tout le soutien que nous pouvons leur offrir est
aussi très important », a expliqué le Lcol Rodgers, commandant de la 16e Escadre. « La 16e
Escadre est une formation hébergée dans la base, nous n’avons donc aucun lien direct avec
le CRFB. L’organisation du tournoi de golf caritatif et la capacité de recueillir un tel mon-
tant d’argent à injecter directement dans le CRFB sont pour nous une excellente façon
d’aider la base à appuyer les familles. C’est pourquoi nous continuerons d’appuyer cette
organisation. » Bravo zulu 16e Escadre!

Every year at Borden we celebrate a national sport initiative known as Sports Day in
Canada (nationally Nov. 29) on November 28. Sport has always played an important role
in military fitness, promoting physical fitness, leadership, espirt de corps and the warrior
spirit. Recreational sports help to maintain physical and mental health, promote community integration and build family relationships. Is it for this reason that we celebrate Sports
Day, to recognize the role and importance of sport with our CAF community. Come out and
join us, bring your families and have some fun!
Daytime events include: four mini tournaments will be taking place, beginning at
08h00, with a pause for lunch from 11h45-12h45, resuming at 13h00. Teams are already
registered, so come out and cheer them on! Volleyball in the Fieldhouse, 3 on 3 Basketball
in the Buell Gym, Squash in the squash courts, and 3 on 3 Hockey in the Andy Anderson
Arena.
Attention Parents: In the evening, free activities are available for families! From
17h00-19h00 public skating is available at the Andy Anderson Arena, from 18h00-19h00
bowling at Circled Pine Lanes, from 18h00-19h00 swimming in the Buell Aquatic Centre,
and from 17h00-19h00 a variety of activities in the Buell Gym and Fieldhouse including
table tennis, badminton, ball hockey, basketball and rock climbing.
There’s something for everyone!
So get off the couch, get moving and come and play with us as we celebrate Sports Day
in Canada!

Chaque année, à Borden, nous célébrons une initiative nationale de sport dénommée
« Journée du sport au Canada », le 28 novembre (le 29 novembre à l’échelle nationale). Le
sport a toujours joué un rôle important dans la condition physique des militaires, en encourageant l’aptitude physique, le leadership, l’esprit de corps et l’esprit de combat. Les sports
de loisir aident à maintenir la santé physique et mentale, à promouvoir l’intégration communautaire et à bâtir les relations familiales. Nous célébrons donc la Journée du sport pour
souligner le rôle et l’importance du sport dans la communauté des FAC. Venez vous joindre à nous pour passer quelques moments de plaisir avec votre famille!
Activités de la journée : quatre mini tournois auront lieu, à partir de 8 h, avec une pause
repas, de 11 h 45 à 12 h 45, et reprendront à 13 h. Les équipes sont déjà inscrites. Venez
donc les encourager! Tournoi de volley-ball au complexe sportif, tournoi de basket-ball en
3 contre 3 dans le gymnase Buell, tournoi de squash aux terrains de squash et tournoi de
hockey en 3 contre 3 à l’aréna Andy Anderson.
À l’intention des parents : Le soir, trois activités gratuites seront offertes aux familles,
selon le programme suivant : 17 h - 19 h : séance de patinage public à l'aréna Andy
Anderson; 18 h - 19 h : partie de quilles au salon de quilles Circled Pines; 18 h – 19 h :
séance de natation au centre aquatique Buell; 17 h – 19 h : diverses activités au gymnase
Buell et au complexe sportif, notamment tennis de table, badminton, hockey-balle, basketball et escalade de rocher.

passed away peacefully at Royal Victoria Regional
Health Centre, Barrie, ON on Sunday, November 9th
2014 in his 53rd year.
Beloved Husband of Janette. Loving Father of William,
Nicholas (Heather). Cherished Son of Douglas and
Patricia Blais and Son-in-law of Irene Plamondon. Dear
Brother of Carol Fisher (Terry), Daniel (Hollie), Theresa
Nielsen (Larry), Barbara Blais, Susan Backer (Rick) and
Penny Effler (John) Sadly missed by Sister-in-law
Dianne Brownley and Brother-in-laws Paul and John
Plamondon. Fondly Remembered by his God Mother
Auntie Rosie Thoroski. Dave will be sadly missed and
always remembered by his many relatives and friends. At
