he New Year means new opportunities, and for the BFRC, new is certainly the
buzzword. Over the years, the BFRC has endeavored to provide programming for
children of all ages as they support the families in our community, however, one
age group was left out - not anymore! 2015 brings the opening of a new Infant Room for
the care of children aged 0 to 18 months.

familles de notre collectivité. Malheureusement, un groupe d’âge était toujours laissé pour
contre. Plus maintenant! L’année 2015 amène avec elle l’ouverture de la nouvelle salle pour
les poupons qui accueillera les enfants de 0 à 18 mois.

featured in International Martial Arts
Magazine
wner / Operator and Head Instructor at The Karate Dojo in Angus was recently
featured in an International Martial Arts magazine. The January 2015 edition of
Budo International portrays local Karate Instructor Steve Lynch, a 6th dan in
Karate, in a four page article discussing the integration of Goju-ryu Karate to Vital Point
application.
The article discusses the
application of Kyusho (vital
points), a system utilized
prior to the advent of Karatedo. Kyusho is the study of the
human anatomy's weak
points such as, but not limited to the nervous system. The
article touches on a popular
defensive technique in the
Goju-ryu Karate style, a
hooking block (kakei uke)
and the attack to a wrist
point.
The article continues to
suggest a progressive learning method that Mr Lynch utilizes in his monthly sessions as well as the important "horse
before the cart" analogy. This is a big stumbling block that people with classical training
encounter. With much enthusiasm and excitement (this is fun), the practitioner tends to go
all out and put Kyusho into their style. Mr Lynch explains in the article you should put your
style into Kyusho for more progressive retention and advancement. On the other hand, people that participate in the study groups with no previous training, seem to progress quite
efficiently which is good news for those looking for self defence but have limited time.
Steve Lynch is the certifying instructor and Canadian representative for Kyusho
International, a global collective of Kyusho enthusiasts with over 300 locations in 30 countries. The international site is www.kyusho.com. Knowledge and experience is shared via
the Kyusho International forum, a tool where dialogue occurs with some of the top practitioners in the world!
When asked how it felt to be in a martial arts magazine, Mr Lynch stated, "Well, it's very
humbling to say the least. I grew up doing martial arts and as a kid I was always in awe seeing the greats like Chuck Norris, Jean Yves Theriault and the rest in the karate magazines,
so it's a thrill and shows that hard work and dedication reaps its rewards." Jokingly sensei
Lynch added, "the best part is Jean Claude Van Damme only has one page in the magazine,
I have four! But in all seriousness, it's a great reward and good for publicity for our study
group and international organization."
Mr Lynch has trained and taught around the world including Japan, Okinawa, Europe,
Mexico and the USA and continues to promote the martial arts in the village of Angus and
abroad.

the summer or keeps you from beach

you are embarrassed or nervous around the

Fear not! The Buell Aquatic Centre has the
solution! They offer adult swim classes, which
are tailored to you!
Rather than following a strict Red Cross program, instructors poll the class and find out what
they want to work on, their challenges, their
goals. You want to learn how to float? No problem. Need some tips to help you complete a few
laps of the pool? No problem.
Simply come on over to the Buell, and choose
a 4 or 8 week session, offered Tuesday nights
from 6:15 to 7 p.m.
Whether you need a quick brush up on your
skills or you need to learn from the ground up, the
Buell’s Adult Swim Program will have you
swimming like a dolphin in no time!

Also going on this winter at the Aquatic
Centre is Aquafit, a fun, low impact way to burn
some calories and have a great time getting wet.
Aquafit is open to all ages, no swim experience

asked CAF personnel,
their families and DND employees to pledge to make the 2014
Holiday Season a little safer for
everyone by not drinking and
driving. More than 120 participants answered the call by signing their name to an ornament
and placing it on a Pledge Tree
donated by Canadian Tire in
Alliston. The goal was to bring
awareness to impairment free
driving and keep the importance
of the cause at the forefront of
people’s minds during the
Holiday Season. To support this
initiative, The Personal Insurance
Company donated three winter
driving safety packs valued at
$170 each. The ornaments were
randomly drawn and the winners
were Bob Clarke, Marie Louise
St. Amour, and Mary Lahey.
Thank you to everyone who participated and supported this campaign.

Borden a invité les membres des FAC, leur famille et les
employés du MDN à s’engager et à
rendre la saison des Fêtes 2014 plus
sûre pour tous en évitant de boire et
de conduire. Plus de 120 personnes
ont répondu à l’appel en signant leur
nom sur un ornement placé dans l’arbre de promesses donné par le magasin Canadian Tire d’Alliston.
L’objectif était de sensibiliser tout le
monde à la conduite en état d’ébriété
et à faire en sorte que personne n’oublie ce fléau pendant la période des
Fêtes. Dans le but d’appuyer cette
initiative, la compagnie d’assurance
La Personnelle a fait le don de trois
trousses de sécurité pour conduite
d’hiver d’une valeur de 170 $ chacune. Les ornements ont été tirés au
hasard et les gagnants sont Bob
Clarke, Marie Louise St-Amour et
Mary Lahey. Merci à tous ceux et
celles qui ont participé et ont appuyé
cette campagne.

Special advance screening

ast week, a special event was held
at Borden’s Terra Theatre. Over
200 of our community members
were treated to an advance screening of
Warner Brothers new film, American Sniper
as part of the Films for Forces initiative.
This program was created four years ago
when screenings for the movie Act of Valor
were first offered to the Canadian Armed
Forces by Warner Brothers. With the partnership of Warner Brothers, PSP has continued to grow the initiative over the years, by
offering a few such opportunities to Bases
and Wings across the country.
“They offered it and we jumped at the
chance,” commented Borden’s PSP
Manager, Jen Goodfellow. “We were able to
give out 100 tickets, where each could bring
a guest. We were able to offer some additional seats at the last minute, which is
great.”
The screening was offered as a lottery,
first come, first served.
“It just skyrocketed. I had about 20
voicemails on my phone this morning since
Broadcast mail went out. My phone has
been ringing non stop!” commented Leah
Rouselle, Recreation Supervisor on the
night of the screening.
The film was so well attended, that a
slight delay to the start time was needed to
accommodate the lines of movie goers for
entrance and snacks.
“I feel privileged and anxious to see this.
I loved the preview, I want to see how he’s
going to react. This is wonderful, a great
opportunity,” commented AVS Tech, Marc
Pelletier.
“PSP is proud to provide programs and
services to the military community,” commented Ryan Cane, Senior Manager
Recreation Programs. “Films for Forces is
an example of how our headquarters, base
staff and corporate partners work together to
create unique experiences and events for
military families.” In addition to the screenings, Warner Brothers also donated hundreds of DVDs to OP IMPACT and OP
REASSURANCE. These DVDs will be
part of recreational libraries that the soldiers
can access when they have down time.
American Sniper will be returning to
Terra Theatre later this winter for those who
missed the screening. Stay tuned to the

L
a semaine dernière, une activité spéciale a eu lieu au théâtre Terra à
Borden. Plus de 200 membres de
notre collectivité ont eu droit à une représentation en avant-première du nouveau film de
Warner Brothers, « American Sniper », dans le
cadre de l’initiative des films pour les Forces.
Ce programme a été créé il y a quatre ans
lorsque Warner Brothers a offert le premier
visionnement du film « Act of Valor » aux
membres des Forces armées canadiennes.
Grâce à un partenariat avec Warner Brothers,
les PSP ont poursuivi cette initiative au cours
des années, en offrant des occasions du genre
aux bases et aux escadres au pays.
« Warner Brothers nous l’a offert et nous
avons sauté sur l’occasion » a commenté la gestionnaire des PSP à Borden, Jen Goodfellow.
« Nous avons pu remettre 100 billets et chaque
personne pouvait amener un invité. Nous avons
offert des sièges supplémentaires à la dernière
minute, ce qui est parfait. »
Les billets pour la représentation étaient
offerts au hasard, sur la base du premier arrivé,
premier servi.
« Ça a fait boule de neige. J’avais environ
20 messages dans ma boîte vocale ce matin,
après la sortie du courriel à diffusion générale.
Mon téléphone n’a pas dérougi! », a commenté
Leah Rouselle, superviseure des Loisirs, le soir
de la représentation.
Le film a connu un tel succès que le visionnement a dû être retardé de quelques minutes
de manière à accommoder les spectateurs à
l’entrée et au comptoir des rafraîchissements.
« Je me sens privilégié et j’ai hâte de voir le
film. J’ai beaucoup aimé la bande-annonce. Je
veux voir comment le héros va réagir. C’est
excellent! » a également commenté
Marc Pelletier, Tech Avio.
« Les PSP sont fiers d’offrir des programmes et des services à la collectivité militaire », a commenté Ryan Cane, directeur des
Programmes de loisir. « L’initiative films pour
les Forces est un exemple de la façon dont notre
administration centrale, le personnel de la base
et nos partenaires stratégiques collaborent pour
créer des expériences et des activités uniques
pour les familles militaires. » En plus du visionnement, Warner Brothers a également donné
des centaines de DVD pour l’OP IMPACT et
l’OP REASSURANCE. Ces DVD font partie
des bibliothèques de détente auxquelles les soldats ont accès lorsqu’ils sont en mission là-bas.
Le film « American Sniper » reviendra à
l’écran du théâtre Terra plus tard cet hiver pour
ceux et celles qui ont manqué l’avant-première.

his bright and colorful room is filled with teeny tiny things and everything baby,
leaving visitors with a warm fuzzy feeling and a need to hug something cuddly.
Play areas with bright colors and soft toys fill the room, a child-sized table with
little chairs sits in the middle, and a comfortable rocking chair complete with rug and storybooks is nestled in the corner. One side of the room has a low bar on the wall in front of
a mirror to encourage first attempts at standing or walking. Into the room in the back, visitors will find beautiful little cribs lining the walls for naps, and an adjacent washroom with
a tiny toilet, lots of changing space and heaps of storage.
“We really want to say thank you to the County of Simcoe. They graciously provided us
with the funding to be able to purchase all of the brand new equipment,” commented
Michelle Joyes, Child Care Program Supervisor. “And very graciously we say thank you to
the Base for providing all of the reconstruction of the room to be able to meet the Ministry
Standards.”
The Infant Room will be able to accommodate up to 10 precious little people with 3 staff
to watch over and interact with them. Like the other rooms at the BFRC, programming will
be integrated into each day. “It’s really based on the children’s interest, a lot for this age
group is sensory because they are so fixated on that. There’s a lot of activities for them to
do that the staff will plan,” explains Joyes. “We used to be a theme oriented program, but
we are now trying to go more child oriented. It’s a lot about the interest of the children.
There’s no point in us doing a program on dinosaurs if the children are interested in talking
about transportation trucks. Plans used to be by week, but now they can be 6-8 weeks
because staff will keep evolving the plan according to the interest of the children. For example, if children are interested in butterflies, they might expand that to include other types of
insects. It’s lots of fine motor; they are working on small puppets, cuddly things for them
to touch. Some of them might even be learning to feed themselves or even some of them
depending on the age group, might be learning to walk, so we are supporting them as they
learn those milestones.”
Outdoor play will be available, with the children of the Infant Room sharing the Toddler
playground. Strollers will provide opportunities for walks when the weather improves as
well as chances to get out and see the community.
The whole day is based around the needs and schedule of the individual child. “Families
will complete an information sheet on a daily basis that will let us know when the child was
last fed, when the child was last changed, what feeding routine that they want set out for the
child that day,” explained Joyes. “Having 10 different children here, we have the potential
for 10 different routines, so the staff are here to be able to provide that service for each of

Care Centre's opening hours are now 6:45 a.m.
“We are prepared and ready for older infants because we are really anticipating with
maternity leave ending at the 12 month mark, seeing children coming to us more around the
10, 11, and 12 months mark,” commented Joyes. If you are interested in enrolling your

Upon viewing the room and seeing the whimsy of the tiny items, one can appreciate the
excitement of the BFRC staff, who are looking forward to their first enrollees. According to
Joyes, “There’s a whole bunch of staff up front that are ready and willing to come and help!”

motricité fine; les enfants
manipulent de petites marionnettes et des objets doux
au toucher. Certains d’entre
eux pourraient même être en
train d’apprendre à manger
seuls, et selon le groupe
d’âge, être prêts à apprendre
à marcher. Nous devons
donc les appuyer dans leur
apprentissage alors qu’ils
traversent ces étapes. »
Il y aura aussi des jeux à
l’extérieur, où les enfants de
la salle des poupons
partageront le terrain de jeu
des bambins. Les poussettes
serviront à faire des promenades lorsque la météo sera
plus clémente en plus de sortir pour faire le tour de la collectivité.
Toute la journée est axée
sur les besoins et l’horaire de
chaque enfant. « Les familles
devront remplir une fiche
d’information chaque jour
pour que nous sachions
quand l’enfant a bu pour la
dernière fois, qu’il a été
changé, et pour déterminer la
routine de biberons pour la
journée », a expliqué Joyes.
« Avoir la garde de 10 bébés
signifie une possibilité de
10 routines différentes… Le
personnel est là pour offrir
un service individualisé à
chacune des familles. »
Grâce à la pièce réservée au
coucher, les siestes peuvent
être personnalisées et permettre à un enfant de dormir
pendant que les autres
jouent. Un espace d’entreposage sera également
attribué à chaque famille
pour y conserver toutes les
couches requises dans le
cadre du programme. Le
Programme de garderie
ouvre dorénavant ses portes
à 6 h 45.
« Nous sommes prêts à
accueillir des bébés plus âgés
en raison de la durée des
congés de maternité qui
prennent fin après 12 mois.

rior to the Christmas Holidays, the Base Borden
Community Council ran its annual Christmas
Decorating Contest for Borden community members
living in the RHU’s. Despite a bit of weather on judging day,
our judges still managed to get out and have a tour around the
neighbourhood, though perhaps a little later than originally
intended. Indeed our community was a winter wonderland,
which of course always makes it challenging for our judges to
pick, but some clear winners emerged. Winners were awarded
CANEX gift cards for their Christmas spirit, $150 for first,
$100 for second, $50 for third and 4 honourable mentions who
were awarded $25 each.
Thank you to everyone who participated, as it makes the
neighbourhood more festive, congratulations to the winners,
and a big thank you to CANEX for providing the prizes.

vant la période des Fêtes, le Conseil communautaire de la
BFC Borden a tenu son concours annuel de décorations de
Noël pour les membres de la collectivité de Borden habitant
dans les unités de logement résidentiel. Malgré une météo peu clémente le soir du jugement, nos juges ont tout de même réussi à sortir
et à faire le tour des quartiers, bien qu’un peu plus tard que prévu à l’origine. Notre collectivité brillait vraiment comme un paradis d’hiver,
ce qui rend toujours la tâche des juges plutôt difficile puisqu’ils
doivent choisir. Mais malgré tout, certains gagnants étaient loin
devant. Les gagnants remportent un chèque-cadeau de CANEX pour
souligner leur esprit de Noël : 150 $ pour la première place, 100 $ pour
la deuxième place, 50 $ pour la troisième place et 4 mentions honorables qui remportent 25 $ chacune.
Un gros merci à tous ceux et celles qui ont participé. Vous avez
contribué à rendre votre voisinage plus festif. Félicitations aux gagnants et un autre gros merci à CANEX qui a fourni les prix.

t is interesting to note that energy is a unique commodity, even though it has no material form, we can
often see it and feel it. People wake up to an alarm,
turn on the television to see the weather report, make
coffee, shower and blow-dry their hair. Even
before we are entirely dressed, energy has
touched our lives multiple times. It is something we all use every day, and certainly could
not live without. Energy appears in many forms
such as heat, light, nuclear and solar. How we use
it and how much we use affects us greatly. It is for
this reason that a large portion of the general population in Canada have began to ask, what is a
carbon footprint and how is it related to our
daily energy intensive lifestyles? The answer to
this question is becoming more and more
familiar with the general population. A carbon
footprint is directly related to the contribution
that an entity, such as a building, a family or
a single person makes to the total emissions
of carbon dioxide that is the main contributor
to greenhouse gas emissions. Genuinely, this
is usually measured by knowing the specified
amount of fossil fuels each group is responsible for consuming. For example, every time
you get in your car, heat your home or turn on a
light, no matter if it is directly related to you,
somewhere down the line you have just increased
your carbon footprint. The most economically feasible way to reduce one’s carbon footprint is through
the practice of energy conservation. The reason for this
is because there is no cheaper or cleaner power than the
power that you do not have to produce. If you would like to

Below are some energy conservation tips that you can immediately take advantage of to
keep the Base electricity consumption low and reduce strain on the electrical grid:
• Seal off any unused areas and reduce or eliminate heating in these spaces.
Storage rooms, warehouses, and unoccupied areas are potential “Energy
Vampires”.
• Keep the shipping doors closed when they are not in use.
Statistics show that one shipping door can exhaust as much as
35% of the treated air to the outdoors in a 20 minute time
span.
• If you are decorating your facility with Christmas lights
do your part and make use of the new Christmas L.E.D
lighting technology. As a statistic it takes 140 LED
Christmas light bulbs to use the same amount of
electricity as one 7-watt incandescent Christmas
light bulb.
Below are some home energy conservation tips
that you can immediately take advantage of to
conserve energy and keep money in your pockets:
• One of the easiest ways to save money on
your heating bill this season, is to dress
according to the weather and lower your thermostat setting to what you think is a comfortable level. At night make use of a warm blanket and lower your thermostat setting even further.
• During the heating season when you are not at
home or asleep try setting your thermostat to 18
Deg C (64 Deg F). When your home is occupied
set your thermostat to 20 Deg C (68 Deg F). If you
go on vacation try setting you thermostat to 16 Deg C
(60.8 Deg F).
• Use a nightlight to light hallways where you don't need
the full overhead light. Be sure to turn the nightlight off during the day.

l est intéressant de noter que l’énergie est un produit unique : même si elle n’a pas de
forme matérielle, on peut souvent la voir et la sentir. Les gens se réveillent au son
d’un réveille matin électrique, ils allument la télévision pour voir le bulletin météo,
ils font du café, ils prennent une douche et se sèchent les cheveux avec un séchoir. Même
avant que nous soyons entièrement habillés, nous avons été en contact avec de l’énergie à
plusieurs reprises. Nous l’utilisons tous les jours et ne pourrions certainement pas nous en
passer. L’énergie peut prendre de nombreuses formes telles que la chaleur, la lumière, l’énergie nucléaire et l’énergie solaire. La manière d’utiliser l’énergie et la quantité utilisée nous
affectent considérablement. C’est pour cette raison qu’une grande partie de la population
canadienne a commencé à se demander ce que signifie le terme « empreinte carbone » et
quel est le lien avec nos modes de vie quotidienne énergivores. Le grand public est de plus
en plus familier avec la réponse à cette question. L’empreinte carbone est directement liée
à la contribution de l’entité (immeuble, famille ou personne seule) aux émissions totales de
dioxyde de carbone, le principal contributeur aux émissions de gaz à effet de serre. En réalité, c’est ce qui est généralement mesuré en connaissant la quantité spécifique de combustible fossile que chaque groupe consomme. Par exemple, chaque fois que vous utilisez
votre voiture, chauffez votre maison ou allumez une lumière que ce soit chez vous ou
ailleurs, vous venez d’augmenter votre empreinte carbone. Le moyen le plus économique
pour réduire son empreinte carbone consiste à pratiquer la conservation de l’énergie. Cela
s’explique par le fait qu’il n’y a pas d’énergie moins chère ou plus propre que celle que l’on

• Condamnez toute zone non utilisée et réduisez ou fermez le chauffage. Les locaux d’entreposage et les zones inoccupées constituent de potentielles « sangsues énergétiques ».
• Gardez les portes d’expédition fermées lorsqu’elles ne sont pas en cours d’utilisation.
Les statistiques montrent qu’une porte de quai de chargement ouverte peut laisser sortir en
20 minutes jusqu’à 35 % de l’air traité.
• Si vous décorez avec des lumières pour la période des Fêtes, utilisez l’éclairage à diodes
électroluminescentes (DEL). Une seule ampoule incandescente de 7 watts du type utilisé à
Noël consomme autant d’électricité que 140 ampoules DEL.

responsible for assisting with the overall planning, implementation and evaluation of
the Children and Youth Program.
Qualified applicants will possess the following:

Completed Post Secondary studies (minimum 2 year program) in Social/Human
