Reversible Cable Ribbed Scarf pattern that looks the same on both sides.

Reversible Cable Ribbed Scarf
A nice thick scarf featuring a cable rib
pattern that looks the same on both
sides.
If you've never knit cables before, this scarf is
a great project to learn on. The cable is a
simple 4 stitch rope cable worked over 6
rows.

Gauge and Needles
Gauge is not important, as this is a scarf. Choose needles appropriate to your yarn size. If you are
unsure what size to use, your yarn wrapper will usually have a recommended needle size. In the
sample, I used US 7 (4.5mm) needles with a worsted weight yarn.

Yarn Selection and Quantity
Just about any yarn will do, but something
with a bit of stretch to it will make the
cabling go a bit easier. There is a lot of
texture in this pattern, so look for a yarn
that doesn't have too much color variation.
You will need between 250 to 350 yards
(230 to 320 meters). The amount of yarn
needed will vary by the length you choose
to knit and the gauge you end up with.
Detailed Instructions
Cast On 38 sts.
Row 1: slp, K2, *P4, K4 (Rep from * until last 3 sts), P3
Row 2: slp, K2, *P4, C4F (Rep from * until last 3 sts), P3
Row 3: Repeat Row 1.
Repeat these three rows until scarf is desired length, Bind Off all sts.
Pattern Notes:
slp = Slip next stitch as if to purl, holding working yarn to the back.
K = Knit
P = Purl
sts = Stitches
C4F = Slip 2 stitches purl-wise to a cable needle, and hold to the front of the work. Knit 2 stitches
from the left needle. Knit 2 stitches from the cable needle.
There are only three rows listed for the repeat. This means that every time you do a cable row, it will
be on the opposite side of the work from the previous time you performed a cable row.
If you wish to alter the width of the scarf, you can either add or subtract in 8 stitch increments.

Cable Chart
This chart depicts one “column” of the ribbed pattern. The white boxes are knit on the “right” side and
purled on the “wrong” side. The Grey boxes are purled on the “right” side and knit on the “wrong”
side. This 8 stitch wide cable pattern is repeated 4 times across the scarf, and repeats itself every 6
rows. Remember to read the chart from right to left on odd (“right” side facing) rows, and left to right
on even (“wrong” side facing) rows. The location of the row number is placed at the starting location
as a reminder. Please note the cable on the even rows (shown on row 2) is still a C4F. You still hold
the cable needle toward yourself, even though the cable is shown “backwards” in the chart. The even
rows are read left to right, so the orientation of the cable is also reversed.
