From the Pastor’s Desk
This week provided us with a couple of opportunities to celebrate the good work
being done by good people in our parish.
On Tuesday afternoon, we observed Administrative Professionals Day on which we
paid tribute to and gave thanks for the four special women who work in our offices each
day and keep things running so smoothly, Carol Grossi and Yole Santino in the rectory
office, Magda Roldan in the school office and Marybeth Malone in the Religious Education Office are all to be commended for their generous and loving service to the parishioners of Our Lady of Lourdes. In the name of all of you, I would like to thank them for their
tireless effort in seeing to it that our many needs are being met. They are of tremendous
help to me each day and I know they do their very best to be of help to you in any way
they can as well. May God continue to bless them for their dedication, goodness and love.
Then on Friday evening I had the opportunity to attend the CYO Annual Role Model
Award Dinner at which those who exemplify the true meaning of CYO: Sportsmanship,
Teamwork, Character, Integrity, Honesty, Participation and Example were recognized. I
am happy to tell you that Angela Carbone and Joanne Shadood from Our Lady of Lourdes
Parish were presented with this award. I know that all of their effort has and will continue to go a long way in helping the young people enrolled in our CYO Programs to develop the talents God has blessed them with and to grow into young women and men of
strong moral character. Congratulations to Angela and Joanne on being recognized for
their important achievements.
We are fortunate to have so many people in our parish who help spread the good
news of God’s care and concern by sharing their time and talent with us all. I know that
He looks upon you all with love!
Peace,
Father Frank

I Am the true vine, and My Father is the vine grower.
Bulletin Reflection
To be good stewards we must be good shepherds, willing to
lay down our lives for those committed to our care, not mere
hired hands who run off, “leaving the sheep to be snatched
and scattered by the wolf.”
Focus Questions:
1. What do you need to prune in your life?
2. Talk about the importance of community of sustaining
your faith.
3. Our way of life is from Christ, the vine. How do you
open yourself to Christ’s sustaining spirit?
Time, Talent & Treasure
Children and Family Reflection
We are connected to Jesus and each other. How does
that help you?

First Friday Evening Devotions
May 1st ~ 8:00 pm
Anointing of the Sick
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament
Prayer Hour for Life
The Real Presence of Christ is the gift He
gave us at the Last Supper and when we come to
church, we are truly in the presence of our God, our
Creator and our Redeemer.
On the First Friday of each month, we gather
before our Eucharistic Lord to pray that the culture of
life will prevail over the culture of death, that respect
for all human life from conception to natural death
will be restored in the hearts and minds of all God’s
children.
Please join us for a Holy Hour of prayer before
Jesus in the Eucharist on the First Friday of each
month from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm. It may be a sacrifice
to set aside this time, but time spent in the presence
of the Lord is its own reward.
Nocturnal Adoration
The Nocturnal Adoration Society meets in the Church
on the First Friday of every month.
The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick will
be celebrated on the First Saturday of each
month after the 9:00 am Mass for those who are
entering a hospital or have a serious illness.
Please sit in the pews on Mary’s side of the Altar. The
priests of the parish are always available for the Anointing of
the Sick if you or someone in your family is seriously ill.
On Sunday, May 3 at the 12:30 pm Mass,
all couples who are celebrating their anniversary
during the month of May are invited to
renew their marriage vows and receive a special
blessing for married couples. We encourage all to
participate in this very special tribute.
Lord, help us to remember when we first met and the strong love
that grew between us. To work that love into practical things
nothing can divide us. We ask for words both kind and loving
and hearts always ready to ask for forgiveness as well as forgive.
Dear Lord, we put our marriage onto your hands. Amen.
Rosary Altar Society
May is the month dedicated to the Blessed Mother.
Come and honor her Son by joining us in prayer before the Blessed Sacrament exposed for Adoration.
During this hour we pray for our families, our parish
and for our country.

open on Wednesdays from 9:30 am to 2:30
pm and on the first and third Saturdays
of the month from 9:30 am to 12:30 pm.
The Saturday dates are: May 2 and 16,
June 6 and 20. This is the time for spring
and summer seasonal items. Women and
children’s clothing, jewelry and household
items are here for you. Please visit soon.
Donations gladly accepted at any time.
We invite all parishioners to join us on
Friday, May 1st from 9:00—10:00 pm

“Let me tell you why I believe abortion is the crucial issue of our
age. First, because abortion, too, is about living within the truth.
The right to life is the foundation of every other human right. If
that right is not inviolate, then no right can be guaranteed. Or to
put it more bluntly: Homicide is homicide, no matter how small the
victim.”
~ Most Reverend Charles Chaput
Page 5
To share in communion for the first
time children must have “sufficient knowledge and careful preparation so as to understand the mystery of Christ according to
their capacity” (Code of Canon Law 913).
They must also be able to receive communion “with faith
and devotion” (913).
Our church expects a child to discern ordinary food
from the Eucharistic bread. That ability comes at the age “of
the use of reason.” We generally place that at about age
seven, but it has never been defined because children mature
so independently. If children cannot make the distinction,
they should not come to the Eucharistic table. However,
infant communion is common among other Christian
churches.
Children should understand the mystery of Christ
“according to their capacity.” They need not comprehend the
total mystery. (Who of us can?) They should come to the
table with a spiritual disposition. Communion requires not
just using reason but having faith as well. Formerly, children
were expected to adore the host. That requirement fit an age
when the faithful received communion infrequently and attended Mass to adore the host more than to share in communion.
Citing a different canon (914), the Catechism of the
Catholic Church says, “Children must go to the sacrament of
Penance before receiving Holy Communion for the first
time” (1457). Even so, it is difficult to argue that every child
must confess sins before receiving communion because the
church obliges the confession of serious sins but recommends the confession of venial sins (canon 988). Forcing a
child to confess before communion might affect the disposition required for the celebration of the sacraments.
