God, our Father, please send us holy priests, all for the
Sacred and Eucharistic Heart of Jesus, all for the Sorrowful
and Immaculate Heart of Mary, in union with St. Joseph. We
pray that the Blessed Mother wrap her mantle around your
priests, and through her intercession strengthen them for
their ministry. We pray that Mary will guide your priests to follow her
own words, “Do whatever He tells you.” (Jn 2:5) May your priests be
holy, filled with the fire of your love, seeking nothing but your greater
glory and the salvation of souls. Amen.

1. How do you obey Jesus’ command to go and make disciples?
2. The Holy Trinity show the sharing, interdependent nature of
God. Describe a time when you realized your need to share
with and depend on others.
3. When have you found comfort in God’s presence “with you
always?”

From the Pastor’s Desk
As a Church and as a nation there is much for us to celebrate this weekend!
Today we celebrate the Feast of Pentecost which has come to be regarded as the Birthday of the
Church. Our Scripture readings tell us that, when the Holy Spirit descended upon the Apostles, their
lives were transformed. They were able to go forth using the gifts that God had blessed them with to
boldly witness to His presence in the world.
Thanks to the sharing of the gifts and talents of so many members of our parish family, the
goodness of God continues to be felt in our hearts. It is our custom each year on this Feast to bestow
The Fiat Award on ten of our parishioners in recognition of the good work they have done. I am happy
to inform you that the Pastoral Council has selected
Eileen Alger
Patricia Baron
Anne Behrman
Geraldine Graetzer
Alexandra Incontro
Dorothy Rose
James Sammon
Robert Schiller
Roseann Schiller
Walter Schwer
to receive The Fiat Award this year. In your name, I would like to congratulate them and, more importantly, to thank them for the beautiful ways in which they witness to the love of God in our midst.
On Monday, citizens across the country will celebrate Memorial Day. We will take time from our
usual activities to remember the countless women and men who have made the supreme sacrifice of
giving their lives in the service of our country. We are reminded in the Scriptures that there is no
greater love than to lay down one’s life for others.
As we pause and reflect upon the many freedoms and opportunities that are ours, as we celebrate with family and friends all that we have to be thankful for as Americans, let us be sure to show
our appreciation for all those who helped to make these things possible.
I would encourage you to do that in two ways. Please join our parish family as we celebrate
Mass together on Monday morning at 9 am. We will commend to Almighty God the souls of those who
have given their lives for our country and pray for those in our armed forces who continue to protect us
and defend the values that we hold so dear. Then let us join with the residents of Malverne for the annual Memorial Day Parade beginning at 10 am and the memorial service to follow at the gazebo at
Reese Memorial Park. In that way we will let our service men and women, past and present, know that
they are appreciated and not forgotten.
May Almighty God Bless us all and God Bless America!
Peace,
Father Frank

“As you start life’s road together and you cross the
narrow sands, there’s a King Who sits in Heaven just to
guide you through the land. There will be laughter and
sunshine. There will be sorrow and tears. There will be
promises broken as you travel through the years. But,
put your trust in Jesus; He will be there by your side
and, as the clouds then do gather,
you will have a place to hide.”

As Mass begins, everyone stands to
sing a song. The General Instruction of the
Roman Missal calls this the entrance chant
(47). Its purpose is “to open the celebration,
foster the unity of those who have been gathered, introduce
their thoughts to the mystery of the liturgical time or festivity, and accompany the procession of the Priest and ministers.”
The celebration of the Mass relies on the participation of the assembly. So, when the first song is announced,
this means you! Pick up the songbook and sing! Sadly, some
people do not. If you choose not to sing the entrance chant,
you fail to open the celebration, you frustrate the unity of
those assembled, you postpone thinking about the mystery we
have gathered to celebrate, and you dissociate yourself from
the procession. Surely, no one intends to do all this, but that
is the way it looks. To those who are singing, non-singers feel
like dead weight. Even if you sing poorly, weakly, too loudly,
or too softly, pick up the hymnal and sing! You will praise
God and serve the faith of those around you.
Each Sunday of the year comes with its own suggested text for the entrance chant. But another psalm or liturgical song may be used. The church calls this music a “chant”,
but it means any spiritual song or hymn. All may sing together, the cantor or choir may alternate with the people, or
the choir may occasionally sing it alone.
If there is no entrance song, the suggested text is recited by the assembly, the lector or even by the priest himself,
who may comment on it briefly to open the celebration (48).
