Putting One Foot in Front of the Other:
Stumbling along on the Journey of Faith
At Barrington United Methodist Church, we recognize that all of life is
a journey of faith. We live each day putting one foot in front of the other
on the path that leads us to the kingdom of God. The journey is not
always smooth—sometimes we fall. How do we get back up again after we
stumble? This June during worship we will explore together the rocky parts
of the journey that can trip us up and how to get back up after we fall.

Starts June 14

Pastor's Column by Rev. Chris Winkler
Psalm 100
1 Make a joyful noise to the LORD,
all the earth.
2 Worship the LORD with gladness;
come into his presence with singing.
3 Know that the LORD is God.
It is he that made us, and we are his;
we are his people,
and the sheep of his pasture.
4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving,
and his courts with praise.
Give thanks to him, bless his name.
5 For the LORD is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
I have often said that it is my understanding that the three things
people want most from a church are meaningful, engaging worship;
to grow deeper in faith and fellowship; and a place to serve God
and their neighbors through acts of charity, mercy and kindness.
As we look forward to our new Sunday morning schedule that begins on August 23rd, I will focus my next three Pastor’s Columns
on our plans to enhance these three important aspects of our life
together.
Frederick Buechner says that to worship God means to serve God.
He writes:
Basically there are two ways to do it. One way is to do things for
God that he needs to have done—run errands, carry messages,
fight on his side, feed his lambs, and so on. The other way is to do
things for him that you need to do—sing songs, create beautiful
things, give things up for him, tell God what’s on your mind and on
your heart, in general rejoice in him and make a fool of yourself for
him…

It is my prayer that these sketches of the essential elements of these

invite others to come and join us as we sing songs, tell God what is
on our hearts and minds and encounter the amazing God we serve.
Welcoming, caring community
You are invited to join this welcoming, caring community that worships God in an intimate setting. Essential elements of this service
include: a time of gathering, liturgy, hymns, a sermon, Communion,
and a sending forth into the world to live our faith.
9:30 a.m. Classic Worship
Formal worship experience
Please join us in the soaring, light-filled Sanctuary for this more
formal worship experience. Essential elements of this service
include: a mix of traditional and current hymns, liturgy, organ and
choir, sermon, and a time for children every Sunday. Communion is
celebrated on the first Sunday of every month.
11:00 a.m. Crossroads Worship
New traditions of praise and worship

you will experience new traditions of praise and worship. Essential
elements of this service include: diverse musical styles led by our
worship team, ancient traditions and rituals reinterpreted, and
a sermon that invites both reflection and action. Communion is

Attention All Women and Men!
It takes approximately 25 adult volunteers to run VBS every year
and we have fun together—it’s a great way to get to know many
church members whom you may never get to chat with. No one has
ever walked away from VBS without taking special memories with
them. We have many opportunities available for all levels of helping.
Maybe one of these is a perfect fit for you! You can choose to help
part-time at just a few hours for the week, or if you’re willing and
able, choose to spend the entire week with us. It’s completely up to
you!
• Help to decorate and set-up for the week 6/12-6/14
(6/14 after the 9:30 a.m. service ends)
• Lead kids in groups with teenagers as your assistants
• Lead your very own craft station in the “marketplace”
• Games Leader
• Games Assistant
• Assist in the kitchen with cutting and serving fruits and veggies
Can’t help during the week of? We could definitely use your help
with tear down and clean-up duties on Friday afternoon at 12:00
p.m. Any help you can lend would be greatly appreciated!
Summer Children’s Church Help Needed!
We begin summer Children’s Church on June 14 during the 9:30
a.m. service. We would love for you to lead the kids in fun Veggie
Tales stories, crafts and a movie. The lessons need NO planning
and everything will always be ready and waiting for you. We need
an adult to lead and you must be at least 12 years old to assist. This
is a great opportunity for you to get to know our kiddos here at
BUMC!

Grace Circle and Faith Circle will be meeting at 11:30 a.m. on
Thursday, June 4 at the home of Faith Rotan, 21071 N. Elizabeth
Lane, Barrington. Join us for a picnic potluck lunch—a chance to
spend a summer afternoon together before we head our various
ways for summer travels. Please bring a salad or dessert to pass;
beverages provided. An RSVP to Faith, by Monday, June 2, would
be appreciated so she can plan for us, but if you find you are able
to come and haven't made an RSVP, please don't let that stop you
from joining us! All are welcome!
Mission u: Learning Together for the
Transformation of the World
Mission u is an opportunity to study current issues
impacting society. It is open to everyone: men,
women, children and youth.
The topics this year are:
• Created for Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God,
• Latin America: People and Faith
• The Church and People with Disabilities.
Mission u will be held on two weekends. The teachers for all classes
go through rigorous training and bring a day of fun, hands-on
activities in a small group session.
Mission u One Day Event
Oak Lawn United Methodist Church on Saturday, July 11
Life and Faith in Latin America is the children's (ages 7-11) study.
The lessons and activities will allow children to gain a deeper
awareness and understanding of Latin America and its people.
The youth study (ages 12-15), Latin American: Places, Culture,
and Faith, provides a wealth of information on Latin American life,
customs, culture, young people, geography and liturgical practices
that will help United Methodist youth increase their understanding
of what life is like for Latin American youth. (Youth 16 and over
attend the adult class.)
Mission u Weekend Event
Northern Illinois University, DeKalb, July 16-19
The days include a time of study, worship, small group sessions, and
reflection. The event begins Thursday evening with dinner and goes
through Sunday lunch. Attendees will attend the spiritual growth
study, Created for Happiness: Understanding Your Life in God and
one of two other studies: Latin America: People and Faith or The
Church and People with Disabilities.
Look for registration forms on the bulletin board in the lobby.

We Are in Rummage Sale Mode
Maybe... thankfully... summer is
here! As you finally pack away those
winter clothes, just remember there
will be another Rummage Sale,
October 2 and 3! So, if you're a
person who likes lists, let us help
you out!
1. Put aside those gently-worn winter items and any of your other
treasures for the sale. Let your friends and neighbors know as well.
Drop-offs will begin Sunday, September 27 and continue through
noon on Wednesday, September 30.
2. Consider setting some time aside to come and help—it's a great
way to meet new friends and it's always fun to see what you can
find! We will be setting up for the sale beginning Saturday, September 26 and continuing through Thursday, October 1. If you haven't
joined in the fun of this project, now is the time to start!
3. Marvel at the fact that donations of merchandise and time have
made it possible for us to donate hundreds of thousands of dollars
to very grateful organizations in the past 80 plus years.
4. If you need more information, contact Mary Mellon to see how
you might use your passion to be part of this historic service project.
Mark your calendar and plan to bring a friend!
We have a special request this year: we'd love to improve our clothing department, so are looking for skirt hangers (the clip type). If
you are able to keep the hangers as you shop, please think about
donating them to the sale! Just drop them off in the church office.
Thanks!!!
Thanks to all who purchased geraniums on Mother's Day. That
fund raiser helped us to send the first part of our annual pledge
to United Methodist Women. And, thanks to those who donated
items for the May Baskets. Twelve baskets were delivered to twelve
surprised individuals!

Join Us as We Plant the Congregational Garden!
Over the past two weeks, volunteers have planted a portion of the
2100 tomato plants, 100 tomatillo plants, and various types of
peppers that were raised from seed in a greenhouse. The planting continues as the weather permits. Your heart, hands and green
thumb make a difference!
Lou Schairer, a retired high school horticulture teacher, has been involved in the planning, planting, and harvest in the garden over the
past six years. “It’s a big science experiment. We are always learning
and trying something different.”
The benefit is in the food provided to those in need. Just think, the
average cost of a pound of vegetables is $2. If one butternut squash
is 3 lbs., we can save a struggling family a significant amount of
money by providing our harvest to local food banks. Another word
of wisdom from Lou on the garden, “It’s a great place for people
to really get down on their knees.” To be a part of planting please
contact the church office at 847-836-5540.
Feed My Starving Children
Please contact Linda McGill from the
Missions Ministry Group at [email protected] to reserve your place
on the team to pack meals for starving
children. The next opportunity to pack meals is in Schaumburg,
Saturday, July 18, 2015, 9:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m.

News from Mission in Cambodia
Katie Kirschner, missionary to Cambodia supported by BUMC,
sent a ministry update. Here are excerpts from her letter.
"I have been working with the Women at Risk project, Pkhaa Riik
Chia Thmai (PRCT). The months I've spent working on this
project have been wonderful and challenging, as the main focus has
been a sewing program to best equip these women to know God
and have skill that they might take with them.
My heart is that through relationship with at risk women, we might
creatively love, value and support them.
I have loved this opportunity to do this and I plan on seeking even
more ways to serve through my passion. Most on my heart are the
women who have no community (those who have mental disability
and are homeless, so therefore walk our streets alone everyday),
single mothers, homeless women, women with at-risk pregnancies,
and women in karaoke/prostitution.
I am thankful for your support of me, for believing in me and the
ministry I've joined here. Thank you for your patience and complete
generosity. You have blessed me very much. Thank you!! Katie"

Celebrating 175 years at the July 4 Parade
This year we are celebrating 175 years as a church community and
what better way to start our celebration then to walk in Barrington’s

There are a variety of ways to help. The time commitment is very
flexible. You can help build, walk, or a combination of both.
Here’s how you can help:
Join the Official Committee! Help design and plan the float
• Host float building at your home on July 2 and 3
The times are flexible.
• Provide a barn for float building and storage until the parade
• Assist with float decorating on July 2 and/or July 3
• Walk in the Parade and help pass out information
• Bring a cooler full of ice to go on the float on parade day
• Donate bottles of water for the float riders and walkers
• Carry the Noah’s Ark or BUMC banner in the float
A sign up sheet will be available at the fellowship table in the lobby.
