The 2015 Energy Science Lecture
BF2RA is pleased to announce preliminary details of the 2015 Energy Science Lecture that
will be presented by Professor Rachel Thomson of Loughborough University.
Rachel’s lecture titled “Challenges for Flexible Operation of Conventional Power Plant:
Materials Solutions ” will be given at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England &
Wales, Chartered Accountants’ Hall, 1 Moorgate Place, London EC2R 6EA at 1830hrs on
Tuesday 6th October.
The lecture will examine the impact of demands for operational flexibility on component
integrity in ageing conventional power plant and will focus on materials challenges for
flexible power plant operation. Consideration will also be given on how advanced materials
characterisation and modelling techniques can provide solutions to these challenges.
Rachel has a Natural Sciences degree from Cambridge University and a PhD, sponsored
by the then CEGB, also from Cambridge. Rachel moved to Loughborough University in
1995 and was awarded a Personal Chair in 2002. Rachel is currently Dean of the School of
Aeronautical, Automotive, Chemical and Materials Engineering at Loughborough and her
research interests focus on the behaviour of metallic alloys for high temperature power
generation. Rachel is the Principal Investigator of the EPSRC funded Flex-E-Plant
consortium and previously led the Supergen Conventional Power Plant Consortium.
