Prior to her work with Junior Achievement she spent ten years as Director of Fund Development for Virginia Skyline Girl Scout Council. She also held the position of Public/Private Partnership Coordinator for Virginia Water Project, Inc. for five years. In her current position with a staff of four individuals and 46 board members they are all working to inspire and prepare young people to succeed in a global economy. The JA program reaches approximately 6,000 students in grades K-12 each school year. JA’s three prong approach is to reinforce the importance of financial literacy, workforce preparation and entrepreneurship. In July of this year the area JA office will mark its 58th anniversary in Southwest Virginia with the help of 400 dedicated volunteers. Katherin has been on the boards of: Total Action for Progress, YMCA/Salem, Roanoke Valley History Museum board, Program Chair, Legislative Representative, and Vice President for the G.W. Carver Elementary School PTA, Vice Chair of the Salem PTA Council and a member of the Girl Scout day camp staff for Camp Dark Hollow. Katherin served as the host of the Cox Communications’ show Roanoke @ Work, for three years, this was an opportunity to showcase businesses and their work force. Currently Katherin serves as Valley Easy Speakers/Toastmaster-Sergeant at Arms, Secretary for the Salem Electoral Board and Chair of the Salem/Roanoke County Food Pantry, member at large for Blue Ridge Public Television. Katherin was born and educated in Minneapolis, Minnesota she is a graduate of the University of Minnesota/Twin Cities with a B.A. degree in Mass Communications. It was her marriage after college to Michael Elam from Salem that brought her to Virginia; the two are proud parents of three grown daughters. In her spare time she enjoys travel, crossword puzzles, jazz and attending her daughters’ many events. FROM MIKE SNYDER AND DEWEY ROTENBERRY, LOCAL SERVICE: The Mountains of Music Homecoming needs our assistance serving food and drinks Sat. June 13 from 11:00 AM-6:00 PM at the Montgomery Museum. Come out and support local music and artistry! Sign-up sheets will be on the lunch tables this week. Counts as a make-up too! On Sat. June 27th we plan to have a work day/picnic at the Wong Park in Blacksburg. We'll add a fresh coat of stain to the shelter we built several years ago and clean up the paver bricks donated by Rotarians and local businesses. Afterwards, we'll enjoy a picnic together! FROM THE GOLF TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE: The 15th Annual Rotary Club of Blacksburg Captain’s Choice Golf Tournament is Monday, June 15 beginning at 1:00 p.m. The entry fee is $400 per team/$100 per individual which includes green and cart fee, lunch before the tournament, one mulligan and one raffle ticket. At the conclusion of play, there will be awards for winning teams and a raffle drawing for a variety of prizes including restaurant and store gift certificates, golf passes and signed memorabilia. What we need now is for Rotarians, friends, co-workers, family, etc. to register individually or as a team for the tournament. Registration forms were emailed out and hard copies will be on the table at our weekly meeting. You can mail in your form and entry fee to our PO Box (address is on the form) or you can give it to Aaron Summers or Jamie Dunn at our weekly meeting. If you are not a golfer, there are other ways to get involved with volunteering the day of the event such as helping with registration, monitoring hole in one holes, hosting, raffle prizes, etc. You can also be a hole sponsor for only $100. It would be great to see everyone out at the golf course on June 15th! FROM CHRIS BELLUZZO, YARD SALE COMMITTEE: We have a date! Aug 22. Save your items for donation for our August Yard Sale! It’s never too early to start getting things together, so if you find good items be sure to hold on to them. This year we will have some storage space available ahead of time so if you have something that must go soon let the Yard Sale Committee know! FROM GEORGE MILLER, FOUNDATION COMMITTEE: We are engaged in the annual spring fund drive for the Local Foundation NOW. The Local Foundation is how the Blacksburg Rotary Club can make a positive difference in our local community and the world at large. The Local Foundation has financially supported a broad range of worthy projects, from college scholarships for Montgomery County students to emergency shelter for disaster survivors. All told, the Local Foundation has contributed $23,100 in the last year to support the goals and objectives of the club and its members. The Club requests that you support the Local Foundation by becoming a “Contributor” with a $100 tax deductible donation.
